Fourth T20, Kia Oval
Pakistan 157 (19.5 overs): Usman 38 (21), Babar 36 (22); Livingstone 2-17, Rashid 2-27
England 158-3 (15.3 overs): Salt 45 (24), Buttler 39 (21)

With the momentum of this 2-0 series win behind them, England fly to the Caribbean on Friday and are next in action in the opening match of their World Cup defence against Scotland in Barbados on Tuesday.

It is just the English press talking up the England team before a big event, but I bet they are already planning how they will turn on them if they don’t perform to these unrealistic expectations.

USA beat PAK in a super over.

PAK 7/159 (20.0)
USA 3/159 (20.0)

Super over – USA 0/18; PAK 1/13

Was not expecting that result. Well done USA.

However the chaps watch test cricket, proper cricket while having cucumber sandwiches with their gin and tonic.
No raucous cheering and the like, they may look up from The Times and say ‘top shot that’ or ‘I’ll have another gin and tonic thanks Simon’ but rarely utter more.

In Group A, the USA is through to the Super 8 phase, as is India.

In Group B, Australia is through: England and Scotland vie to be the other team through.

In Group C, West Indies and Afghanistan are both through, both teams having won all their matches so far. Good to see a bit of resurgence from WI and it appears Afg wasn’t just a flash in the pan.

In Group D, South Africa is through but it is still technically open for the second slot, it seems v likely Bangladesh will take that place.

It would be awesome of Scotland manged to sneak through ahead of England. Just to the English press go into total meltdown. They were all jumping on the bandwagon pumping up England just two weeks ago for winning a couple of warm-up matches.

Actually I probably had heard of that.

It still doesn’t seem right.

But the bingbot tells me that:

Certainly! Let’s delve into the fascinating history of the Scotland national cricket team. 🏏

Early Beginnings:

The first recorded cricket match in Scotland took place in Alloa in 1785.
However, it would be another eighty years before Scotland’s national side played their first full match, which was against the English county Surrey in 1865. Scotland emerged victorious in that encounter, winning by 172 runs.
Scottish Cricket Union and Australia:

The Scottish Cricket Union was formed in 1879.
Just three years later, in 1882, Scotland achieved a significant milestone by beating Australia by 7 wickets.
Unfortunately, the cricket union became defunct in 1883, but the administration of the game continued under the Grange Cricket Club until 1909.
Matches Against Ireland:

Scotland’s first match against Ireland took place in Dublin in 1888, with Ireland emerging victorious.
Modern Era:

Scotland became Associate Members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1994, severing their links with the England cricket team.
Since then, they have participated in three ODI World Cups (1999, 2007, and 2015) and five T20 World Cup tournaments (2007, 2009, 2016, 2021, and 2022).
Their first win in either of these events came in the 2016 T20 World Cup when they defeated Hong Kong.

… and I had no idea about all that ancient history stuff.

Rashid Khan strikes for Afghanistan to begin his final over.

He removes Matthew Wade, who attempts a sweep shot but hits the ball to Karim Janat to be out for 5.

Australia 7-108.

Ashton Agar joins Pat Cummins at the crease and the Aussies add three runs after the dismissal of Wade to be 7-111.

t’s a tall order, with Australia needing 38 runs from 24 balls for victory.

Gulbadin Naib begins his final over and Afghanistan uses up its last review after Pat Cummins survives from the first delivery.

But two balls later and it’s another WICKET!

Cummins is bowled for 3, as Gulbadin claims his fourth wicket of the Australian innings.

Australia 8-111 in the 17th over.

Next, what will probably be the USA’s last match in the comp, that vs England.

Slap and tickle cricket is a lottery.

So that’s it for Ausralia.

I wouldn’t say that, they can still get to the semis if things go their way.

I think that is obvious. “if” is the limiting bit as per usual.

Well the dream is over for the USA with a bit of a drubbing from Wngland but no doubt they’ll retain happy memories of their wins over Canada and more particularly Pakistan. Blighty is now assured of a place in the semifinals. West Indies and South Africa play the last match in that group, and the winner goes on to the SF.

South Africa get past WI in a close rain affected match, and SA goes ahead to the semifinals along with England.

Surprisingly all teams in the other group still have a shot. Fair chance of rain in Kingstown which would mean an NR for Afg and Ban.

India has beaten Australia in a high scoring game.

Only one match remains, which is Afghanistan versus Bangladesh.

If Afghanistan wins, they go to the semis and Australia is out.

If Bangladesh has a moderate win, Australia goes to the semis. But if Bangladesh has such a big win that they pass us on runrate, then they go through and Australia is out. I think the mark is that Bdsh needs to win by 62 runs, or if chasing they need to bring up the runs in 13 overs.

It’s a bit rainy and a No Result would also be enough to send Afg through.

After all we did for them.

Bdesh were making a good start in the chase, but play has been interrupted by rain, due to restart at 11:50 pm local. Don’t these people get drowsy?
3 and half overs batted so far.
Unless Bdesh bats for 5 overs, it is a No Result.

“They are now heading off for rain and Gulbadin Naib is still trying to sell the fact that he had a genuine problem as he is helped off the ground.
Litton Das is having none of it.
The replay is incredible. Jonathan Trott gestured for his side to slow it down when the rain got heavier and Gulbadin suddenly – and very dramatically – threw himself to the ground holding his hamstring!”

LOL

Bangladesh can’t qualify for semis now… basically they are playing for pride, and for Australia. Whereas Afghanistan qualify if they win.

I think this is the first time this millennium that the South African side has made it the final of any comp. Their ability to choke at the semis is kind of legendary.

They did get a gold medal at the Commonwealth games in 1998, and also the old ICC Champions Trophy in that same year.

Each of the semis was a drubbing and now it is a SA v India final.

SA v India starts soon. I wouldn’t mind SA winning, they are due.

Both teams were undefeated in the tournament.
