Two primate species have been successfully cloned over the last few years via the SCNT technique.

Two crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis) were cloned in Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017. The macaques developed without any abnormalities and are still healthy today. They have produced offspring of their own.
Several more were created in the same way a few years later in order to test gene editing technology.

This year, a rhesus monkey called Retro was cloned using a SCNT technique.

Although long-lived healthy primate clones are now being produced, the success rate remains low. Only about 2% of the embryos produced are viable.
