I do much enjoy Woodie’s assaults on the French language. Seeing what he writes, and deciphering his intended meanings is like learning a whole new language.
This one (‘souviants’) had me stumped for a minute. There’s no such word in French, and the nearest i could get to it was ‘souvient’ (to remember) as in il me souvient d’avoir fait = i remember having done.
Then it dawned on me: suivants. Again, not an ‘official’ French word, but one dervied from suivant = ‘following’. So, ‘suivants’ is a slang-type name given to those who follow on behind the mass of cyclists, in the support fleet.
