We could have this and save money on our electricity bills.

Imagine you log into your smart electricity meter via your smart phone and you select which energy producer you want and that energy producer charges you directly.

You see rate per hour, how much energy you are using per hour and your total any time you wish on you smart phone via an app.

No more unwanted 3rd party billers that you pay their wages via your electricity bill.

Where does it say on electricity bills how much money the billers take for their wages?

A lot of figures on electricity bills are really figures pulled out from thin air.

Thin Air Figures people.

Thin Air

And whats the CEO wages of these unwanted tier companies?

We are paying those wages.

These billers look at only a few points of information on the meter.

The same information a smarter meter could do.

Want to Save Energy!

Imagine if every hot water service in Australia was replaced with heat has you use hot water ?

People would save hundreds each year.

Yes.

Heating and storing hot water when there is an excess of electricity supply available is one of the ways that variations in supply will be dealt with.

And probably one of the most efficient and cheapest ways.

Off peak hot water used to only be at some ungodly hour in the morning. Nowdays it is whenever there is enough power to fo around.

Vic Housing replaced the old hot water service with a 250 litre hot water service.

Starting from the next billing period I’m turning the hot water service off for 6 days a week and I’ll be washing and showering on the 7th day.

See what difference it makes to the bill.

Okay, thank you for your interpretations.

So what is meant is “what if every electrical hot water system with storage was replaced with an electrical on-demand hot water system”.

What would happen is that:
Higher power would be required
Customers would not be able to choose cheap hours to heat their water so overall costs would be higher
There would be less scope for moving heating to low-demand hours, meaning overall supply would be harder to shape to demand, leading to higher overall emissions.

If all hot water systems in Australia were replaced by hot water on demand or heat as you use hot water systems then the energy and money savings would be very significant.

I replaced my old (but free) inherited solar hot water with a modern one after the old tank failed last year. It’s brilliant. I get about 5 days of hot water during cloudy cold weather before I have to turn the booster on.

I was brought up to call the tank, heater, thermostat, pressure relief valve and drain valve a “hot water service”.

A “hot water system” also includes the supply and delivery pipes and their taps.

Me also.

But what i’d like to see instead of centralised hot water heating and distribution on a separate line of plumping is an electric induction heating unit for every tap that needs hot water. One unit under the sink in the kitchen, one in each bathroom, one for the laundry etc.

All connected to one set of cold water pipes, and integrated with the mixer tap to heat up the water right at the point of delivery. No problems with someone using the kitchen hot tap while you’re in the shower.

What are you trying to say?

Seriously, are you a bot?

He means “Instantaneous hot water”.

There are many means of heating your household hot water, and none are perfect.

Solar is the greenest, but requires significant outlay and re-routing of plumbing and a few other downsides.

Then there is the common electrical storage – this has the benefit that you can use cheap off-peak electricity to heat the water for later use.

If you don’t use much hot water, there is electric instantaneous. The up-side is you don’t pay to heat water you don’t use, but the downside is that you pay full price for the electricity to heat that water.

There is gas instantaneous which is pretty neat but you may find yourself having to run outside in winter mid-shower to change the gas bottles over if you don’t have town gas.

The best, IMO is heat-pump. Instead of turning electricity directly into heat, electricity is used to move existing heat into the water. Very efficient, but can struggle in sub-zero temps.

I have noticed with mine is that you start to get a gas smell, after you have finished your shower and the unit is off, when the bottle only has enough for maybe 3 or 4 showers left in it. Not there before your shower so it isn’t a leak.

There is gas instantaneous which is pretty neat but you may find yourself having to run outside in winter mid-shower to change the gas bottles over if you don’t have town gas.

I have noticed with mine is that you start to get a gas smell, after you have finished your shower and the unit is off, when the bottle only has enough for maybe 3 or 4 showers left in it. Not there before your shower so it isn’t a leak.

I have town gas. It’s the duck’s nuts; the bees knees etc…

We too have town gas, but it’s ‘ken expensive on the east coast.

The best, IMO is heat-pump. Instead of turning electricity directly into heat, electricity is used to move existing heat into the water. Very efficient, but can struggle in sub-zero temps.

We’ve had heat pumps for around 40 years now. Even our first one claimed to be OK with about minus 5, I think it was. Which we don’t have often. The unit that pumped the gas up over black panels on the roof for heat gathering was stunningly efficient but they aren’t done that way in more recent years. And the pumps have gotten quieter. In the Winter you could hear the thing pumping away for hours during the night before it managed to collect enough heat to have the tank up to temperature. Not as long now, as you can’t set the temperature as high as you used to be able to do. If you time it right on a warm day though, a couple of heavy loads of warm washing is replenished for hot water in under half an hour.

My latest gas bill is $49.15. sitting on the table in front of me waiting to be paid. Covers 10 April to 11 July. Gas instantaneous hot water (with electric ignition), gas stove in the kitchen.

It is the cheapest of all my utility billz.

I have gas boosted solar hot water. Most of the time, the sun heats up the water. Occasionally, there are clouds, or cold winds. At that point, the gas boosts the water temp so that i can have a hot shower.

Or no shower at all. I mean Henry VIII had a bath every six months whether he needed it or not.

fair call, sweat should wash away most of the bad stuff, and if one consumes food of sufficient greasiness and carefully restricts hydration, then the resulting digestive byproduct should be firm and formed enough to pop out without leaving a skid mark that needs to be cleaned off

It somewhat sucks but what can you do.

Bummer in winter time, I love luxuriating under a nice hot shower in winter, well I have my shower towards the end of winter.

Only one a year?
