so far Yasi has not listened to the Fiji Met, the Vanuatu Met nor the JTWC. To date she has also not listened to the BOM. Her history has suggested that she has maintained a westerly track without not to much variation to the North or South. I hope this continues, although if this where to eventuate, I feel sorry for my friends in the Cape York and Torres Strait communities.
I have this odd feeling that Yasi will do one of those two week journeys across the top of the country, and over to WA… but I doubt it very very very much. Townsville is about to get a bit windy.
Here’s what the Americans think.
Here is what a very wet Townsville could possibly look like as predicted by our local Mayor; King Les and friends.

Funny, I was just telling my UK friend June last night that I think Cairns is going to cop that cyclone.
I’ve never seen a cyclone so big.

Not sure what “big picture” you’re referring to. The link I put up shows where Yasi originated (more or less) and how far she has to travel before she hits Australia…obviously she is travelling at speed to reach Australia in the couple of days that they say…
Every time I open my browser, I have a tab that automatically opens at the BoM as welll.

You won’t know downtown if a storm surge hits…I still remember the last one even tho’ I wasn’t there (if you get what I mean)
What are the wind speeds for Yasi now?
Technical Info on Cyclone Yasi @ 17:00 last night
I don’t really know how to read the wind gusts on this information sheet but usually between now and 9 am there will be an update…
Here is another BoM Map of Yasi
Note that ex-cyclone Anthony looks like it is passing to the south west of Lake Eyre…

It’s very detailed, isn’t it? It’s not just the one wind speed they measure, they measure two standards of gusts as well…moving west at 22 knots…this must be for the people who use this info the most, as in the sea-faring community…
What I mean is, the use of “knots” as a term in these cyclone updates, rather than kilometres per hour…

Hey Potter, take a look at the couple of clods that are just to the left of Cape York, they are falling into the Gulf of Carpentaria. These clods will normally sit proud on top of the hot land mass range that is the Cape York, but in this case, TC Yasi has scared the feck out of the little clods and made them fill their kimbies and fall into the sea.
Even storm clods are scared of Yasi!

that is my understanding. Trichome is also in the area I think
I was contacted the other day by a potential new housemate (old one is moving in with her boyfriend) who is in Cairns – due to fly to Perth on Saturday but she’s not sure if the flight will be canceled! Depends whether the airport is flooded I suppose, and various other things, like whether there is still a flight tower after Yasi has been through. We have a tentative date to meet and for her to see the room on Sunday, Yasi permitting.

PM is in the danger zone, I am not…but I’m stocking up on non-perishables just in case the power cuts out…or maybe we’ll get isolated again…we are just getting windspeed up now, and are on the very southern edge of the cloud associated with TC Yasi…but thanks for the thoughts…

grumblegrumblegrumble…. that radar and obs were invaluable this morning. I noticed it did the same thing during Larry too!
What I can see.
27C Barometer is dropping 1003mbar, strong squally windy shower has just been and gone.
You’re right about Willis Island instruments getting knocked about during Larry.. I’m sure I heard them say this morning that the new facilities were built to a catagory 5 level this time, too. What happens if there is ever a catagory 6 cyclone? I know there is no such thing but do we have a construction level to cover a 6?

The new towns in WA and in Darwin have stricter codes then us, and they can build to Cat 4, but up here in NQ, I’m pretty sure no builder is allowed to say he/she can build to above Cat 3. Litigation is the issue. Our place is cat 3 rated and was built after TC Althea (bigger then Larry and bigger then Tracy but then you’d think a Cyclone destroying Townsville on Xmas Day would be newsworthy but nah) when building regs were pretty strict.
Current obs, 26C and very cool, 1000mb and falling, Southerly winds, fairly gusty and 4mm of rain.

I checked with MrD…our building standards out here are Category 2, not related to cyclone ratings: where Pain Master lives and other exposed coastal sites would be Category 1. There are areas here and west of the Great Divide that would be suitable for Category 3, but the local council has insisted for the past 28 or so years, that all structures be to Category 2 standard…
was wondering about Category 6 as well…

CT has been very green of late, has only just started to dry out a bit. The goldfield ashes were a green wicket paradise!
That is probably just a blimp in the radar, maybe the tower was obscured by something… a flying cow maybe?

okay, the only fact I know is TC Yasi has been pushing a wave height of between 21 and 35ft. This does not relate to sea swell.
There was to be expected a 2.5metre swell above the tide, which at high was 3.5 so potentially a 7 metre swell.
But it has missed the high tide.
Stay safe PM.

Clear as mud…
sustained wind gusts now 80kph with individual wind gusts up to 120kph recorded in Townsville.
barometer down to 993 and temp still a balmy 25C
you can clearly see Tully in the eye of the storm now… hopefully Yasi will now start to ease up… although she is still sucking huge amounts of water off the Coral Sea…
Holy Slappin’ Bumcheeks Batman, what a ride!
Wind is still (10 minute sustained) gusts to 80kph and gusting to 102kph from the ENE, which means we are now on the good side, which will hopefully see only a few more hours of this??? Barometer is on the rise at 997mbar :)

Told ya!
TC Yasi is now a Cat 2 and has lost her “eye”…
From the BoM:
“At 7:00 am EST Tropical Cyclone Yasi, Category 2 was estimated to be 95
kilometres southeast of Georgetown and 205 kilometres west southwest of Cardwell
and moving west southwest at 36 kilometres per hour.
YASI CONTINUES TO WEAKEN, BUT IS PRODUCING HEAVY RAIN AND DANGEROUS WIND GUSTS
AS IT MOVES ACROSS THE TROPICAL INTERIOR.
The DESTRUCTIVE CORE of Yasi, with gusts in excess of 125 km/h, will weaken as
it continues to move in a west-southwesterly direction. Yasi is south-east of
Georgetown and will be near Mt Isa tonight as a tropical depression.”
As she is so far north, even tho’ she is a big cyclone, I doubt we will get much rain from TC Yasi in our area…
I still have fond memories of the WA cyclone (can’t remember the name tho’) that took it’s time to move across from WA to the eastern seaboard, raining heavily as it went…think it may have caused the March 2009 floods here?
it was the same video Dinetta.. I stuffed the second link up.

roof is solid, not a tile out of place. I was really impressed with the house, no shaking, just the occasional flap of the skylights. Power lines are down out on the street. The fence looks okay, I didnt take a close look though. The shed and duckhouse looks solid. The nylex stayed upright, 180mm of rain weighed that down. The trees that fell over during TC Olga have gone again.
Bloody Hell, that wind has just kicked again!

Gums aren’t the type of trees to grow in a cyclonic area obviously. Palms are built to take the force and even they give way in the big blows.

we also have threaded rod, or cabling which is attached to the hardwood trusses and then runs down the cavity of the walls into the foundation. This hopefully holds the roof trusses to the ground.

Palms are super grass up here! Although I reckon with a bit of pruning nay even pollarding the gums will survive. The bleedin’ Albizia stayed upright!!!

Sounds like the OB was hopping mad about TC Althea and determined to thwart any future cyclones from damaging his haus….did you buy from him or had the haus changed hands a few times?

changed a couple of times, OB was a nursery man, so I’m guessing he did most of the tree planting. I think he gauged the height of the trees to the distance of the roof pretty well. A couple of trees are out of place… not too many.

she was moving quickly and drawing water all the time, which is why she remained at 500kms across. Hopefully she has cooled the Coral Sea sufficiently so that Yasi is the last for 2011… fingers crossed.

Seriously, have a confirmed report the Strand is underwater and many many trees are down.
roof is solid, not a tile out of place.

Actually it is a known weed, just not a declared weed. You’ll find it on the weed lists, but it’s not illegal to have one growing in your garden, unlike salvinia, for which there is a ridiculously large fine…something like $20,000 from memory if an environmental officer happens to spot it in your pond! (I think you get a warning to remove it first though, then they come back a month later and if it’s still there, your pocket suffers BIG time)
Strange that you can have a plant that is a known weed like umbrella, but you are not obliged to remove it. I think they are not permitted to be sold in nurseries but I could be wrong. Doesn’t stop them being sold in garage sales and at markets though. Sunday Carpark markets are filled with little stalls of various weeds…

That little gem is just a ridiculously sensationalised statement of fact anyway. Any bee on the ground will sting a barefoot person, but only if you stand on it. Fallen jacaranda flowers attract bees – funnily enough, those bees will also sting you if you stand on them barefoot.

an engineer called Stobie won a competition in south australia to design a telegraph pole.
a stobie pole is a tall (9-12m high?) column with steel channels on the ouside and unreinforced concrete between. it’s possible to prefabricate millions of them very cheaply. they are termite resistant and stronger than the equivalent timber pole. still in use in SA today.

…and raise a toast to the builders and engineers who seem to be getting good at cyclonic building.what was the maximum wind speed towntown suffered during yasi?
i saw one report suggesting towntown only got 130 kph wind. if that’s the case it was well short of the 500 kph expected.
fairly sure no estimate got above 380kmph

Yep.
Also very automobile resistant as can be attested by southaliens. At least moreso than the average spotted gum trunk.

looks like they got gusts up to 180kph until the equipment failed?
but going to BOM radar page and clicking on local towns that do pop up a square on moseover.. double click on Townsville then read backwards

They look ugly as all power poles do but in SA they tend to plant Ivy Generaniums around the base of them and it makes them look so much better. You don’t even notice the pole after a while just the lovely flowers.

there was flooding during the high tide on Thursday morning in Railway Estate and South Townsville, also in the fringe of the city (the Reef Aquarium was flooded), but the swell marker out at Cape Cleveland which recorded the “monster 18m swell approaching” was actually an upturned buoy.

the skylight panels are just two perspex sheets which sit into a frame at inside ceiling level… They are loose so that you can remove them easily for cleaning. Now the pressure exchanges between outside and inside during a cyclone can cause the roof to “shift”…. in our case, the weakest part was these loose panels, so they flapped for want of a better word. If they were not there, then the man-hole or woman-hole cover into the roof would have done similar.
No real need to get someone out to check the roof, but I may go up there next week to see if all is safe and sound.
No leaks despite 230mms of rain.
now TC Yasi was never going to get to 500kph… the US Navy which keep and eye on things very well always said that the central pressure and wind speed was always 160kts, or what 280kph? The BOM never said 500kph, but maybe a journo did? I dunno…
TC Tracy and TC Althea and TC Larry all busted BOM equipment at around 240kph, and the BOM will be the first to admit that anemometers are delicate and it is really really really hard to get a robust anemometer to survive a TC. I am not sure how they record wind speed up on Mt Washington in the US, but surely even that anemometer shits itself from time to time.
Towntown recorded wind speeds of close to 130, there may have been some 150s but I daresay that may have been at altitiude (Castle Hill or Mt Stuart)… but despite claims of Cat 3 winds for Townsville, I doubt it. Cat 3 will cause structural damage, and there has been no gutters down or sheds collapsing… I have seen one or two really shonky home made sheds collapse, but have also seen some not shift.
There are fences down in town, and some road signs down (all Cat 2 stuff) but every second tree is buggered… trees on Castle Hill and Mt Stuart are stripped of all leaves and many are recumbent. I have seen 3 stobie poles on the recline but only mine actually prostate… I have actually seen a palm tree down!!!
I spent the day at work on the chainsaw, and this afternoon on the chainsaw. Tomorrow should see 8 more hours on the chainsaw and still my yard maybe not clear.

there’s no sea to the south of Townsville…
winds started at 3pm from the South-Swest… at around 8pm the winds increased in speed and changed to the south. The strongest winds then came in around 1130pm and were SE… Easterlys then took over but were really strong through 1-6am… 6am through to around 11am were moderately strong ENE, and then gusty ENE from 11am to around 8pm…
There was close to around 29 hours of very gusty strong winds, but around 7 hours of scary shit in the middle. But in total, being a newbie Qlders I would say prolly the worst was 8pm through to 11am…

So it was the pair of them together.
Excerpt from that article. We copped those hailstones here too, only not so big.
“Moorabbin and Narre Warren, in Melbourne’s southeast, were the worst-affected, but the west also endured some of the biggest downpours in memory.
Hail stones the size of golf balls fell on Leopold near Geelong, and half a dozen factories were damaged in Strezlecki Grove, Laverton, when 132km/h winds swept through the suburb.
“A mini tornado hit the area for sure,” factor owner Stephen Tennyson said.
“Floor-to-ceiling windows in my office are smashed, the flag pole is bent in four different angles and corrugated iron is strewn around the area”.
About 30,000 households in central, western and northern Victoria were left without electricity due to lightning strikes.
The deluge was due to two cyclones: the angry tail of Queensland’s killer Yasi, and the earlier Anthony.”

The name Yasi has no sexual orientation, it is simply the fijian word for Sandalwood. The last 3 Fijian TCs have been Ului, Vania and now Yasi… I wonder if your name in Fiji is sexually orientated as to whether you have an “i” or an “a”???
Yesterday a shop had a sign up saying “Fresh Bread stock has arrived. Please keep smiling :)”
There are around 4 service stations open, for 175,000 people. So far not too much road rage in the long queues.
The queues at the ATMs are massive? What are you going to spend your money on? Maybe fuel and bread from that happy shop.
One fish and chip shop is open, cooking with gas.
We have promised to help the lovely mature age lady across the road get out of her driveway. I will offer her assistance once the rain stops. The odd thing? Her daughter lives next door and her son lives three houses away yet none have offered Mum any help??? But I have just noticed her son-in-law is out there with a chainsaw. It is really raining outside and he has a chainsaw in operation? Might put my ipod on so I don’t hear the screams.

Nice to know your stomach isn’t suffering from Yasi aftermath. Sad about the lady over the road. It’s in times of crisis that you can sort the men from the boys Just as well the good people totally outnumber the bad overall.
how is this for Yasi’s effect on river levels… This graph show the quiet peaceful Burdekin River go from a depth of around 1.5 metres on Thursday afternoon to around 18metres by Friday night and then down again. This river is also around 400metres wide at this bridge!!!

not me, but a neighbour has said she will loan us hers… but the council are driving around picking up everyone’s waste for free (until the next rate hike) and they will mulch it all and offer it back to us for free… well that’s what they normally do. So hopefully todays tree stump will be tomorrows mulch?

no we don’t need rain and our Dam is chocker-block… just that the water treatment plant is running on standby mode and people are busy I dunno drinking water too much???
well the neighbour now has access to her driveway. Her daughter helped in other parts of the yard and thanked us for the work we put in… the son-in-law said “thanks, I didn’t know how to tackle that tree, it was so bloody big”. The YWAM kids drove past in a bus and stopped and helped the old guy down the road, so his jungle is a little tidier now. My hands are like mince meat but they’ll be alright in the morning. The tree we chopped up and a million green ants and GF and I are now covered in bites from our ears to our arses. One little turd even managed a bite on my eyelid. Tomorrow we will tackle our yard again. The horizontal stobie pole is now the most photographed stobie pole in Towntown, ffs. Sight bloody see-ers… Apparently the local IGA is back in business, Hoorah! No power now for 72 hours, Centrelink are giving GF and I $1000 bucks each for the inconvenience. I would like to thank Fanta Pants for the contribution! Onya Darl…

No power now for 72 hours, Centrelink are giving GF and I $1000 bucks each for the inconvenience. how is this for Yasi’s effect on river levels… This graph show the quiet peaceful Burdekin River go from a depth of around 1.5 metres on Thursday afternoon to around 18metres by Friday night and then down again. This river is also around 400metres wide at this bridge!!!
Whole lotta water! I notice it’s been raining up the Belyando catchment area as well, probably not as much as the northern catchment…

100 points is roughly 25mm. Points measurement is an imperial measurement. Until we went metric (sometime in the 80s?) rain was measured that way. 100 points equals 1 inch of rain

Ahh, OK. Well having read that, I will endeavour to forget the exact definition, and just remember it is an outdated measurement :) (I have a terribly memory so no point trying to remember something I won’t need to know later!)

The old measure…about 4 points to a millimetre…100 points to an inch = 25 ml

no decimal currency was around for a fair while before we changed to metric measurements. Might have been 70’s, but I seem to remember that it was well after I left school (which was ’73). Will have to Google it :D

well today the army of green ants amassed onto the mango trees. They love those trees. Well the chopping and the chainsawing continued but this time the green ants were fierce, they attacked in waves, they would climb to higher limbs and parachute onto our heads, while climbing up our boots from the ground. The remaining green ant force would wait for the chainsaw or the bushknife and climb on board so they could attack the hands.
I am now covered in welts and smell like bentnovate.

My driveway… one gum tree across the drive, another 2 trees and 1 palm, are leaning on the fence and that driveway is normally pink granite gravel.

My driveway… one gum tree across the drive, another 2 trees and 1 palm, are leaning on the fence and that driveway is normally pink granite gravel.

to allay your fears but not ease the watchfulness.. Weather bureau says Cyclone Zaka, which has developed near Fiji, poses no threat to the Queensland coast.
Doesn’t say where it may end up though.

I don’t think they have enough, in those particular areas. Not an expert though.

Zaka is off the east coast of NZ so will never bother real Australians.
Cyclone Yasi will be remembered by Townsville as The Great Pruning

I meant to ask, Pain Master, how did your work up in the Atherton Tablelands hold up?

we lost an Umbrella Tree (everyone go ohhhhhhhh!) and it took out some fence panels and a tap. But the shrubs we put in survived from the pictures I have seen. The Bruce Hwy is yet to be open for tourists and sightseerers yet. Might head up the week after next to take a look.
