Subject: Roku box on TV

Getting notification on the screen when we use SBS on demand or iView about Telstra TV closing down at the end of October. I’ve done a bit of reading around and now I’m confused. We only use it for catchup TV, no commercial streaming. Our box is branded Roku. It is not branded Telstra TV Roku. Will the Roku box still work – I suppose I’m asking if it’s independent of the Telstra TV boxes.

Never mind…I believed Mr buffy when he said it didn’t say “Telstra TV” on the box. It does. So we will have to get a new box. They are recommending Fetch apparently.

I have an official Telstra box. Supplied by Telstra when I signed up for the NBN package. Plug it in to your dumb TV or monitor and it turns your dumb TV or monitor into a Smart TV.

But I already have a Smart TV so I don’t use it. I use all the functions already included on the Smart TV. e.g. Right now I am watching Eng vs Sri Lanka test cricket at Lords via the Kayo app.

Yes, our box came from Telstra when we went NBN. Apparently our TV is a smart TV. We will have to find the instruction book.

Could do that, but the cable would have to trail across the room.

You should be able to just work it out as you go along…

unplug and remove the Telsrtra box. Turn on the TV and bavigate to the “home” page – mine is a Sony and the remote button is conveniently called “Home”. From that menu I can select iView, SBS, Kayo, Netflix etc, judt by using the direction arrows and the select button.

My Telstra Box is still plugged into the old dumb TV in the bedroom. But i have not used that in ages on account of the fact that I fall asleep as soon as I tuck myself into bed, I can’t stay awake in bed and watch TV.

OK, perhaps our smart TV is too old. I found the “Hub” (Samsung TV). Yep, I can navigate to various icons, including iView. Can’t work out how to navigate within iView though. And SBS isn’t there at all. The choices on it are pretty rudimentary. Mr buffy declares the TV is “not all that old”. However, we had it before I retired, which is now over 5 years ago. We’ll see about the cheapest box thing available from Harvey Norman. We only use it for freeview stuff, but I do want to continue having access to iView and SBS on demand.

Telstra emailed me, and said they were closing down Telstra TV, and would send me a free replacement box if I did something soon after receiving the email. Unfortunately I didn’t, so I don’t get the free replacement box.

I’m hoping it will continue working without the Telstra add-ins after the due date.

According to SBS, it won’t.

As far as I know we’ve had no notification. Mr buffy deals with that stuff. I noticed something on the screen just recently announcing it when we were going in to watch stuff.

Ms Buffy,

Might I suggest a Chromecast device. From Harvey Norman/Officeworks etc. They are very popular. They plug into the HDMI socket of your tele.

I have 3. One built into the tele, one connected to the tele and one for the overhead TV projector.

Apps in “smart” TVs are a “one off” version for that particular tele. They do not get updated, and will eventually stop working with “version not compatible” or just won’t work. A Chromecast device will update itself so you always have the latest version on the device. Chromecast devices are made by Google.

A Chromecast device does NOT have any apps loaded into it. You use your phone/tablet to control it, so you always have the latest version of the app.. You can use it from your computer as well. Get the 4K Chromecast device if you have a 4K UHD TV.

You use, say, theFreeView, Iview or SBS on Demand, 7+, 9Now etc, Netfilx etc, or any other app, including Youtube. There is a FreeView app for your phone/table.

It costs you nothing to try these apps (including FreeView) on your phone to see how they work etc. This gives you the ability to control play/pause/volume etc from your phone/tablet and search functions using the phone/tablet popup keyboard, rather than silly up/down arrows to navigate an on TV screen keyboard.

Wherever you see the below icon on your computer or phone/tablet, just tap it, and it will automatically use your TV by tapping it.

Mr V,

You can get a “wireless” HDMI cable. Then you don’t have the hassle of the cable. They’re a bit pricey though.

here

I’ve just bought a couple of them. Replace that 15 metre HDMI cable strung across the ceiling to the projector. Haven’t plugged ‘em in yet.

Me??? Addicted to Temu. 😮

LOL

The lappy easily plugs into the cable that the old box plugged into. All good. Plenty of room.

Thanks.
