There is a bloke I work with that always sets the radio on what you might call a classics station. No worries, right?

However, I caught this one hit wonder the other day, and it turned into an ear worm. I wonder how many of you have experienced the same thing, and which ones you like…. or dislike for that matter.

That was a fun record. The B-side was “!aaaH-aH, yawA eM ekaT oT gnimoC er’yehT”, the A-side track played in reverse. There were two sequels, the first by Josephine XV (Bryna Raeburn, a member of the CBS Mystery Theatre cast,) “I’m Happy They Took You Away, Ha-Haaa!”; the second was Napoleon XIV (Jerry Samuels again), “They’re Coming To Get Me Again, Ha-Haaa!”

In poking around … or, should that have been pecking around? … I was reminded of another one-hit wonder:

Psycho Chicken, by The Fools

Link

Technically not a one-hit wonder, but their follow-up single release didn’t do much – at least not in Australia, as far as I can find out.

I doubt it was a hit or much of a wonder but I keep hearing a song in my head. I believe the title may be ‘Penelope Play’. I also believe it was an Australian band.

Late sixties. Like 67/68
Come and play Penelope,
in the fields and gardens.

Now I did have a weird mix collection of popular singles and odd releases.
I do remember having a sampler from various advertisement jingles and maybe a Hoadley’s Battle of the bands sample record. For some reason I am leaning towards a band like The Flying Circus or others like that.

Back when we lived in the Bundaberg area, i saw Doug Parkinson play at the local theatre.

Took me right back to the Manzil Room in Kings Cross.

When he opened up on ‘Dear Prudence’, it was like a cool breeze blowing away so much dust and cobwebs.

Yes. He did that song so well. In my opine he put others like Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart, Jimmy Barnes in the shade for that genre of singing like they are spitting blood.

I think from memory the advertising one was mainly about Coca Cola so I thiink it probably came from the Hoadley’s sampler.

The main problem was that I left the sutcase of singles behind when I moved out of home and my sister took them to her boyfriends then her boyfriends mother gave the lot to St Vincents and years after I left home and was Project officer for CYSS that a young unemployed person came in and began playing singles on the stereo we had. I said they sound like the stuff I had and it turned out that he had got the suitcase and whatever was left in it, still with my artwork and lettering all over the case and the singles from St. Vincents. I really doubt any of it still exists.

After that they are still good but can’t recapture the song writing from that album

Wright of Waye never peaked.

Not on the airwaves no. However, I did get to hear of them in an out of the way place, so I daresay they were more popular in Australia than anywhere else at the time.

That list is messed up. Devo had a half dozen hit songs. So did Spandau Ballet and the Divinyls. What is this shit?

It seems not.

And from my list of favourite performers, genuine 1 hit wonders (if we are talking Top 20 singles) would be:
Pentangle
Buffy St. Marie (maybe?)

and for zero hit wonders, lots of them, but I’ll go for:
Fairport Convention

Led Zep never had a No 1 hit but…

In 2005, lead singer Robert Plant said releasing singles was more associated with “pop” groups like The Rolling Stones. Led Zeppelin didn’t want to follow that trend because their main statement was the album.

I mean they did release singles though. Whole Lotta Love, Stairway to Heaven, Immigrant song were all pressed as singles.

No. I was buying albums at the time. One a week on average, from an $18 paycheck.
