I often see sportspeople using black on their cheeks to reduce glare, and I’ve also seen military folks do this in movies, though I’ve no idea whether the latter occurs in real lif

Does this … achieve anything? I can’t see my cheeks: literally no part or them are in my field of view, even in the extremes of the lower periphery.

My nose, I can see. I could understand blacking the nose to prevent glare.

Maybe it is only useful to people with certain faceshapes: high cheekbones, prominent cheekbones, chubby cheeks.

put your open hand, open thumb and pointer finger across under your nose to check, around where mouth is to check, I think brian tends to block it out as unnecessary unchanging stuff in the field of view

it’s peripheral also, so brian probably does stuff to simplify visual processing, like reducing by redundancy

Thought you’d probably be able to describe the phenomenon.

For athletes.. ..This light can impede their depth perception and ability to catch the ball as it flies through the air. The eye black has the purpose of absorbing the interfering light better than the natural skin tone can, reducing the glare for the player.

Improves accuracy of vision?
Snipers might use it then?

I can see tops of both my cheeks, even when I am looking ahead. Not when I am looking hard upwards, though.

We suppose the sky is blue and all the rest of it so the fact that sources of light including reflective pseudosources of light are not directly visible does not necessarily mean that glare is irrelevant.

Perfect excuse for dressing up in different colour face though.

If it was highly effective you’d think cricket players would wear it in the field.. looking at skied catches.

You need to do the experiment. Apply eye black and walk around normally for a day. Report back with the results.
