Hmmm, now we know bon enjoys the same musical pleasures that the son of Bubba does and Bubba herself enjoys the musical pursuits of a certain indigenous dare I say it folk singer. And Anne and Thee have voiced their objectives towards the metal fraternity yet Potter doesn’t mind a bit of Ozzy Ozzy Ozzy and Yeehah, was that Lionel Richie and the Aussie greats the Mentals?
but this thread is for those songs that get stuck in your head. So bookmark it, and use it for those instances when you just can’t get a song out of your head.
Tonight at 2 o’clock in the morning, I am still mentally humming “Backporch” by The Presidents of the USA.
“Old man on the backporch
Old man on the backporch
Old man on the backporch
and that old man is meeeee”

Lionel Ritchie wasn’t me!! Mentals, yet.
But ever since we saw Guy Sebastian in concert in Yarra Park on New Year’s Eve in Melbourne I seem to hear “Who’s that girl”(which I believe to be one of the most lame songs in recent history) at least once a day and I’ve been humming it at work all work.
My defence is “The Pushbike Song” – but I have to hum really hard to get the really solid rhythm of the preferred tune to override the subliminally pervasive yuk song.

Weeeeelll.. that’s stretching it a bit. There is some metal I genuinely enjoy, but most of it I just happily tolerate. When I’m picking the music, it’s more likely to be Joni Mitchell, or the soundtrack of a musical – between us we have an odd looking collection of music.
I watched Bran Nue Dae for the first time, night before last when I was really ill and couldn’t sleep. Might have to hunt down the DVD and soundtrack of that one, I loved it.

I read somewhere that studies showed the best way to deal with an earworm was to sing the song or listen to it. Apparently that got it out of your system, where trying to think of other things didn’t. I don’t seem to get them much these days in any case.

Haven’t got room for earworms atm. The kids next door are outside playing – 3 of the five who live there, plus a friend or two visiting. And the backdrop is the noise of the annual show. I live less than a block from the showground. I can hear the music doof-doof-ing from sideshow alley, there are chainsaws going atm, plus the intermittent voice of the announcer at the showring. Might have to go do the ironing in the loungeroom (the room that’s furthest from the noise!) and put on some of my own loud music on.

What, all your mangoes gone?
Never saw the trees looking so bare
Leafs are all gone
What do I care.
New buds will come, flowers will too
So all you ants
Enjoy your view.
Are they your words Pom?
Of course they are. No one would ever be writing lyrics about the poor green ant’s life being upset by a cyclone. Would they? These days they write about any old stuff.
I write bits and pieces for special occasions. Birthdays, baby births, achievements and stuff like that. Only for immediate family and never serious and never for a song before.

What, all your mangoes gone?
“All Your Mangoes Gone” sounds like it could be a song title.
Oh no, that’s given me an earworm! A song we learnt in primary school which was sung in the round:
My mama did-a tell me that you go mango walk, you go mango walk you go
My mama did-a tell me that you go mango walk and steal all the number ‘levens
I tell you Sue I tell you for true I tell you
That I don’t go on no mango walk and steal all the number ‘levens
Luckily Mr Bon has some metal playing at the moment so hopefully the worm won’t last :D

That’s not true! At least according to Rock Band. I’m not generally considered good at singing – but I got Flawless Vocals on Imagine, on Expert setting! Seems to be just right in the range that I can do easily. I’d love to challenge myself with some Joni Mitchell, but it’s not available on Rock Band :(

When I used to go to pubs and sing karaoke with a friend (ah, youth!), it depended on who the karaoke operator was, as to whether I could sing in tune or not. I don’t understand much about music, but I know which songs I can reach the notes in when I sing along to the radio or CD, but often at karaoke they were in a different key and I just couldn’t hit the notes.

Just the pitch for you or not. It can be raised or lowered. As in a baritone can’t sing soprano but music can be adjusted to suit.

My singing voice has collapsed since I had my Thyroid operation. My voice was the one thing I was blessed with that was above average and now it’s caput too. I was an alto but now I think I belong to the crow goup like Bubba. I bet you’re better than a crow too Bubba.

What Pomolo said…if you’ve got the “ear”, you can automatically pitch in tune whether soprano or baritone…I love hymns because you get harmonies (the Welsh are especially good at this) where each voice sometimes has a different range of notes for the same words…
When my voice was better, I would start a song so my brother could get his pitch, then we would happily sing for miles…and miles… and miles…my children don’t like singing during road trips any more…
Crying shame your thyroid op had that effect, Pomolo…singing a song to suit yourself, really lifts your mood…only worry if the dog tries to hide under a wardrobe, tho’!!

I’m not very good at mentally adjusting the notes to the next.. octave? My brain doesn’t really process music well at all. So I tend to try to stick to whatever pitch the singer happens to be doing..

There’s one CD I’ve been listening to at least once a day lately, and I’ve got a new mantra from one of the songs, to stop me from stressing and worrying when I start feeling unwell:
“Let it slide, let it slip away, the pain can’t hurt you, so forget about it”
It’s been rather nice using a musical mantra rather than just “chanting” something to myself.

1999 Mr Folds released that tune, now while he does know how to make quite the noise at times, his work on the piano can be considered quite listenable. He had a song out called “Brick” which was very very popular with a wide ranging audience. He once lived in Adelaide for around 5 years, enjoying the cosmopolitan lifestyle that Unley has to offer.

Yeh, maybe :) I do find his negativity/sharpness a bit bothersome in large doses, but then he’ll do a song like White Wine in the Sun or Not Perfect, and all is forgiven. I find those two songs so uplifting, although they do tear me up too.

in this mess i have made”
I found it and listened to it. Never heard it before but then I wouldn’t. How old is this one? Just curious because at least it is a song. I suppose because I don’t like much of todays music I miss a lot of good stuff to.
I’ve been to Unley. Don’t understand the attraction. Because it was 1999 I was probably not listening to much new music.

How is this for a bit of tender sweetness… yeah, I know, I’m normally noisy when it comes to music. Bubba, you sons might not approve.
