well, seeing that vampires can, apparently, turn into a bat one would think they would be vampire bats. vampire bats are sanguivores, feed exclusively on blood, so I would imagine they are hungry and as a side benefit get some water from the blood so they don’t have to drink. so maybe both.

They drink blood as nothing else satisfies the thirst

I think they can eat for appearances sake but don’t need to.
