I don’t recall the metric measurement system turning up…suddenly all the road signs were in kilometres…

I still like the old feet and inches, just can’t get the hang of the “mind’s eye” of centimetres etc…although a metre is roughly a yard, and a kilometre is 5/8 ths of a mile…

Getting there…2 cm = roughly 1 inch…30 cm = roughly 1 foot (12 inches)…

It started earlier than I remembered. Didn’t realise it was so early in the 70s

I think I may have ignored it as I’m sure the mileage signs were bilingual for a long time…you know what I mean…

Now I am thinking about it I remember converting from Farenheit to Celsius and trying to do the conversions and I think the road sign changes were at about the same time

Celsius just turned up one day for me…suddenly I needed to know them…spent a little bit of time comparing with Farenheit and once I got my bearings I was right with Celcius…

but as a young gardener I worked with old men, some of them were at least 40 years of age, and they loved all that inch and feet stuff. So I learned both and deal with both.

And yeah, Dollars and cents were around before my birth but I can recall seeing mph figures painted on some SA roads.

I can still remember the conversion rates…12 pence (one shilling, a florin) = 10 cents, etc…hard to believe $2 = 1 pound, and these are now tiny coins…how much they used to buy way back then!

that’s not exactly right D. Suppose it’s been picked up by now anyway.

as in the florin was 2 shillings?

to convert Celsius back to fahrenheit in your head

double – subtract the tens unit – add 32.

for example – 45C x2 = 90 – 9 = 81 +32 = 113F

I remember when mum and dad bought us this amaaaazing new game that we plugged into the tv and there was a white line down the middle of the black screen and a little white stick either side that a white dot bounced off – tennis!!! What an amazing feat!!!!

And more recently, when Older Son turned 16 in mid-1996 I splurged on a USB drive for his birthday, a huge 1GB, because they’d recently halve in price from $100 to a low $50.

Ah, technology!!

Wow, from pounds shilling and pence to black and white tellies, the advance of technological development and sweaty armpits.

Who would ever have expected it of a bunch of so-called gardeners, lol!
