Subject: My sister's place

This morning some time, my sister Deb rang to say the house was going to be flooded. They had been up in the plane to see how the paddocks were fairing and there was this HUGE water system heading to their homestead. She used the word HUGE.

One paddock is 14 km wide and only about 2 km was not under water.

She was hysterical and so distressed and I couldn’t do a thing except say that the kids were safe (Jo is married and lives in Adelaide) Ashley is in Adelaide as he off to Kangaroo Island for 2 weeks work on another property over there. Hang onto that thought…the kids are safe and you have had some warning of the flood coming towards them.

Later today I had this gut feeling and so I rang…… this was the whole call…….

Me: Ringing to see what is happening

Deb: I;ve gotta go it’s in the house………………………

That was it the call.

I have rung all our family to let them all know what is happening. Jo got to speak to her beofre it was too bad and the water was over Deb’s feet in the house and in the paddock next to the house paddock….it was up to his knees. But being land…its up and down and so I can’t really say how actually deep the flood is.

Now I have to wait until they can conntact us….. There is Deb, Paul and the single lad. They are taking shelter in the shearing shed as that is on a small hill….

Deb has rung and thank goodness….now her voice in my head is calmer.

House has water through it…..but for some reason its deaper outside than in.

water in the house isn’t a foot deep, but between their house and the single mens quarters it would be up to her waist and its making a noise as it flows past.

They will be living in the shears quarters for weeks she said.

A guy from Burra rang to see how they were going rain wise. Paul told him what was happening and he and 3 other guys drove 125km to help them move furniture up to the wool shed. When the last guy arrived water was getting into the house.

We cried together on the phone…………………..

Well as usual tea was late and the dishes a wait me.

Thank you for listening to me….

distressing though it is it sounds like it is all under control. At least they have alternative accommodation! Is this the sheep farm? Is there sufficient high ground for the sheep?

From the amount of awesome that’s been in the news lately, it’s pretty apparent that most people have the potential to be awesome, it just takes the “right” situation for it to be apparent.

Here’s hoping that your sister and her family and the animals come through okay, Lucky.

It was so sudden, wasn’t it? Has this never happened before on your sister’s place? On an isolated spot they would feel helpless as they have so few options… I do hope they come out of it a lot better than it looks at the moment…((Hug))

Flooding of the homestead has never happened in Deb & Paul time there, just over 20 years. But it has flooded before their time.

Deb rang this morning, hope I can make sense as I type.

Water is in all 3 bedrooms, hallway and into another room (I think). Paul & David (work hand) put clay mud against the doors and this helped to to keep water out. Due to the steps inside the house, this keep water out of the other rooms. House stinks and is fifthly…..be weeks before they can live in it.

Fred their pig is a huge feral pig they got as a baby he’s neck deep in water…….. so they are going to try and see if they can get him to high ground where there are some yards. They don’t know if he’ll go crazy and charge them, so a gun will be used if a life is threatened. :(
Getting Deb’s chookies out today as they are on high perches, off up to the shearing shed for a new sleep over.

Around the back of their house the water didn’t go….so the garden and fish pond is okay. Little bit of water went into the cold room area.

There are 5 feeder creeks into the creek all this water has come from on the station…….1 creek has had 5 inches……Yunta and another creek has 8 inches of rain flowing towards them.

David’s house is okay as its a blunts transportable and on stilts.

Ashley (son) he set himself up in the single quarters last year and over a metre of water went through his place:(

Power to the house …that generator is underwater, also Paul has disconnected power to the house. But they do have power at the wool shed…. Solar must be working. Also that was rewired when the power upgrade was done.

Stock

They know one paddock they have sheep losses. Paul saw their bodies washed up against a fence:( He’s hoping to get out in the plane today (airstrip must be okay) to see if helicopters may need to come in and move stock. Over a metre of went through the plane hanger.

4 guys

They stayed until they had to go. Paul took them by tiny boat to the main road and they had to walk to their vehicles (they were taken to a safe area earlier on) then walk to their cars….they are home safe. On the way home it took Paul 20 mins as the currant was so strong and the tiny boat was so light to get back to the homestead.

Deb is going to make their stuff as safe as possible from the mice and sort out stuff to make it easier to get to while they are living in their “evacuation centre.”

So glad I was able to hear from her before the night was over. Even when i think of the call when she said “it was in the house…gotta go” I still start to cry. I feel so helpless here………..I can’t ring them…I have to wait until she rings me…..due to the problem.

so glad they all are safe. thanks for reporting Lucky.

might be best to renovate the shearing shed to live in and keep the house as tourist headquarters.

our national anthem says something about droughts and flooding rains – maybe we should change the wording LOL.

At least it sounds as though they are ready for anything now. Please send them our best.

I have already done this Pomolo…….

You know they are dry and safe. That’s the number 1 priority in a flood so all will be OK I’m sure.

Update……

Paul is up in the air and has told Deb, over 300 square mile could be underwater, asked Deb to contact SES in their area and give them the heads up.

Deb will know more when he lands on how bad it is or is going to get.

Good news….. Fred is happy as a pig in a flood….. he’s on a little island rooting for food and having a nap at last check. So they have left him there…poor old bugger is full of arthritis.

Lost some stock…Paul mentioned 6000 sheep and so many hundred of cattle, but Deb isn’t sure what he meant by this. Could be last, threatened or okay where they are…….have to wait until the next phone call.

WOW Lucky that is unbelievable news, I just happened to do one of my random stop bys ( I know I am slack and should visit more ) I am so glad they are safe, these flood waters seem to be catching everybody. I am sure the shock would be hard for them, and for you as well, it is scarey to hear of your loved ones in danger. Sending a Hug to you and your family XO

I wonder if it will come my way, for the first time since I have been with MRD the back paddock is flooded, and water is lapping the road to the general store… incredable what mother nature is throwing at us ….

Yes they are coping though it could be up to a month before they can use the road. Paul will find out if they can land the plane in Burra somewhere so they can buy perishables.

The excess power needs to be channeled somewhere. Up at Debbie’s place the excess power goes into a huge amount of batteries that are used at night for lights, TV and such.

If that’s what your sister has got, it would be part of the property operations… I can remember when the power on properties came from generators and after 11 pm or whatever, the generator was switched off…no raiding the fridges at midnight LOL!

Must have been why ours lived downstairs…we had a Coolgardie safe as well plus those canvas waterbags that were hung in the shade of trees to catch the breeze…

At the “camp” the fridge lived inside the caravan…I can only be thankful, after your description, that ours just very politely went out and never had hissy fits LOL!!

I’ve never heard of gas fridges…I’m guessing the “luxury” was the fact they “behaved” themselves and were more reliable? Also they had a bigger cavity (room inside the fridge)?

We looked at the possibilty of a gas fridge at our place, but in the long run we thought it cheaper to spend $1,500 on a thumping big camp fridge and some solar panels and have no running costs (except occasional generator backup e.g. a cloudy week in winter) rather than over $2,000 for a gas fridge and forever paying for and chasing gas bottles around. And having the gas run out and not realising it …!

We have a two-bottle system for the stove. Normal full-size freestanding gas range/stove. The installer set it up so that if someone had the huge big (40kg?) bottles they will fit the space, but we have two 9kg bottles, the one in use sits on top of an old cupboard to reach the connection point.

The trouble with the big bottles is that they need to be transported upright, and it’s too exxy to have someone deliver them 46km out of town. Mr Y would have to weld up a frame for the trailer to be able to do that. So we just accept the fact that we have to check how full the bottle is before, say, cooking a roast following by a cake and a batch of bickies, lol!

Safety. Legislation – maybe? 6-7 years ago when I filled in at the local general store I was under instruction not to let any of the farmers take them lying down in their utes or trailers, I was to insist that they stand up. My dad bought a little secondhand ute so he could get dirty/smelly stuff home (they’re 60km from a big regional centre) and he made a frame for the back of it so he could strap the upright gas bottles safely to the back to bring them home.

My dad bought a little secondhand ute so he could get dirty/smelly stuff home (they’re 60km from a big regional centre) and he made a frame for the back of it so he could strap the upright gas bottles safely to the back to bring them home.

This might be to stop the top of the bottle, with the tap and stuff, from getting knocked around…do these bottles explode if their taps get knocked off suddenly?

I have two bottles for my stove, but both were empty when I moved in and I could only afford to replace one at first. When It runs out I will get both done. I only have to go across the road for them so it is easily done.

At this very moment Paul is in the plane, checking on stock. This will mean of course seeing what losses they have as well:( Those poor animals would have been terrified…….my heart breaks for animals as they would have been so scared.

This will give Paul an idea of where he is able to get to on motor bike of 4 wheel drive.

His little Jack Russell (Jacki) is in season and due to male sheep dogs…..she is in an enclosure now the water has dropped away from those kenneled areas. The other night she barked for most of the night and last night Paul clicked and had a look….mozzies….. mozzies by the mozzies…annoying the little girl. So she was sprayed with mozzie repellent and so was her home. She was okay until 5 am and Paul sprayed everything again. He’s thinking of setting her up in the work vehicle at night to keep her mozzie free….but I suggested the now clean bathroom and close the door.

I am hoping Auntie Lucky wins:)

Fred is happy as a pig in crap:D One of his 2 rooms is now water free and the other room only has a puddle.

Boss has said to measure all the rooms damaged and they can have new floor coverings of their choice……how cool is that. Said to Deb, they are redoing the paint and such in their bedroom and now they get new carpet….. who would have thought the redo would also include carpet or floating boards or lino ……

The ancient Egyptians used to rely on the Nile’s annual floods to deposit fertile silt for them to farm in…but the silt that your sister is dealing with, might be different?

Oh it’s so hard on the animals…especially sheep…all the wool would soak up a lot of water, wouldn’t it?

Poor little Jacki…I hope Aunty Lucky wins too…she might pee in the work vehicle and where would they be then? There’s a tablet to keep fleas off, wonder if it keeps Mosquitoes off as well? I usually put a coil out for Puta if the mozzies are bad (if they’re too bad she gets put in her cage in the house) …this coil is on one of those holders that comes with 30 coils and has a lid…we have sprayed her on occasion…the 1:1:1 of Dettol, baby oil and aerogard / rid…in a spray bottle…shake well before each use…it’s a bit pongy for dogs but does the trick…

I don’t know what the situation is in SA, but there have been 4 or 5 cases of Ross River Fever in northern Vic due to the floods providing breeding grounds for mozzies.

Its worried Deb as they are hearing of cases down around their part of the state.

They are taking the 4 wheel vehicle with a motorbike on the back to see if they can get through as their boss wants to come up tomorrow with supplies and to have a look at the damage…… She’s happy to get out of the hosue for a while and see what is happening out in the paddocks.

From a sufferer of a very virulent form of Ross River Fever, spray yourself well when going outdoors…at the very least you will spend six weeks on a couch, hardly daring to move…then (if you’re lucky) you’ll spend the next six months getting your life back…

Their boss is trying to get there with food, mail and stuff via Yunta. Food as in vegies and stuff

They are going to meet him half way……hoping not to get stranded or bogged. She’ll ring me when they get home.

Girls over on the quilting forum as putting a care package together for Deb of some bits and bobs for her sewing area. I bought her some fabric while in Port Pirie for a quilt she wants to make.
