I have got a new helmet…it loooks like Darth Vader’s face at the back…hopefully it will help me go faster without extra effort…the old one was, well, old, and it had taken some knocks not to mention the pecks from the Magpies in the days before I learnt to wave them away…
So I got on my bicycle today…as I had no car…oh man am I out of condition? However there is no feeling quite like cruising along at a steady cadence so I was thrilled to finally hit the road…the resident bicycle spiders were not so thrilled…
Steady as she goes Captain, I might be stringing an exercise programme together…would somebody please put the Skinny Thread up?

I’ll definitely need to go for a walk in the morning, just to work the stiffness out of my muscles…was pushing hard to get to the mechanic’s so I could pick up an office key…didn’t fancy leaving my office airconditioner on all night and MrD had accidentally locked my keys in the office…
Also looking at some PCYC classes…boxercise, powerbar (aka “pump”) and easy spin…

I really, really need to give the Bailey’s away…I have 2 full bottles and one half-empty in the cupboard…am all for buying them when on special but really, really need to leave them alone…
Really, really need to get going of a morning…did you know that ladies my age feel disinclined to exercise…something to do with the aging process…what I really, really need to become addicted to is endorphines…(F7)
Am planning to buy a new pair of bike pants next weekend, from Tuckers I hope…they help you choose just like the good dress shops do…I have outgrown my last pair for the time being and after Wednesday I have discovered that at my age a good pair of bicycle pants is a really, really good idea…

The day I get into bicycle pants is the day I resign from going outside ever again. And if I ever got on a bicycle again, it’d be in board shorts :)

It’s the padding in the bike pants, Happy Potter…I found, to my chargrin, that I tend to notice the bicycle seat more these days, physicalities of middle aged ladies and all that, so the properly padded bike pants are a necessity if I plan to ride for my life…
I often wear a pair of MrD’s Canterburys (used to be Stubbies) over the bike pants if I am going in to town…to prevent accidents between motor vehicles and power poles (who am I kidding?) but like you I don’t really like riding in just my bike pants when in “public”, so to speak…along the irrigation farm service roads is fine…

it’s not just the ladies who feel disinclined to excercise. ms p and i are excercising because a thirty year old couple agreed to do it with us – and they are blaming us – meanwhile their mother and (possibly) father , are doing it as well.
so no one want to excercise- but everyone is doing it because everyone else is doing it….?? … makes sense to me – i think?
the good news is that after excercising the body produces dopamine(sp?) – and you feel good afterwards.

It took Mr D about 12 months of bike riding and walking and then, after I found out about it, a programme from a sports physiologist…and he got down to 105…he even got down to 99 one exciting morning…but is now 107…I think he needs a better bike…

I read in the school mag (in relation to building good homework routines)…“for example, you can aim to lose 100 calories a day” (If you’re planning to lose weight)…and as Lucky pointed out, 100 calories = 1 timtam…so yes I can give up a tim tam or equivalent per day…

Terrible night, my back was in a spasm…Sonny Jim forbade me to go to the gym today, MrD showed me a stretch from Pilates…so I did that a few times this morning…then I gently massaged the area and after a while felt it relax…still walking gingerly…the bath was wonderful, haven’t had a bath like that since many years ago at an hotel in Brisbane…am thinking of a swim to relax the leg muscles as well…the arms, strangely enough, are fine…

The bath was wonderful, thanks Pepe…I should have jumped in straight after the class but went to buy dinner etc…then there was NCIS…
I often find, when I’m away, that if I use the pool, steam room or a sauna (there’s a difference between those two) straight after a workout, my muscles are not tight the next day…saunas are no longer “in fashion” and I only ever found one steam room, (Brisbane), and that gym was closed down some years ago

I have got a new back tyre, thankfully the tube (a goop / slime tube) was still OK…this tyre has a tread (the older one didn’t)…it looks like a sliver of stone managed to penetrate the old tyre…this is a mystery and the bike repair man has given up trying to fathom how Sonny Joe and I manage to damage our bikes…the tyre tread looks like the car tyres you see on the European sports models…as if the tyre does a lot of wet road work…I’m hoping it’s thorn-resistant…however there are no lugs on it and I am thankful for that..
Did I say my new bike pants (specially designed for the women cyclists of today) are a beaut? You can’t walk around in them much, this leads to chafing, but on the bike they are a dream…

Got back on my bike, first time in months, and wouldn’t you know it I had a buster…tried to do a U-turn that was too tight for my sense of balance… a rib was clicking and I am not au fait with rib injuries…called the local ambulance..after she helped me up (in spite of Puta’s very polite attempts to protect me) we chatted and I said I would go to a Dr today…I need to see about my feet anyway, I think they are still suffering from my fall when the ladder slid from under me…a week ago today…
Then I took the dogs for a walk on another road, to my chargrin it’s only about 2.2km but I figure the 40 minutes round trip is what matters…

Apparently one can forget how to fall off a bike. ;)

I found the walk very calming. Went to the Dr yesterday, she said the rib is solid but discovered that my “bike” ankle is sprained or strained…I don’t have any problem with the anklle but the bruising is obvious, including the separate bruise on my shin…so today I bought an elastic bandage and also applied an ice pack…besides keeping the legs elevated all last night and most of today…I have found out that my TV dongle will pipe the ABC’s Jazz radio to my hearingaids and have had a lovely lazy day in bed, with some new books…
Might go for a swim later, all that gentle kicking can only get the circulation going again…

sluggish..
It was something I’d do almost every weeknd when I was young. Pull the wheels off take the axles out and wash all the grit and old grease off. Regrease and reassemble. True the wheels so they ran straight. Clean and re-oil the chain. Tension everything just so and afterwards treadling was a breeze. Less often but the same was done to the pedal axle. Bikes get sluggish when you are grinding dirt around in the bearings. Perhaps you don’t need to be as keen as I was but I’d suggest that it needs to be done at least once to appreciate the worth of knowing how.

Not quite 12 months since the bike was last serviced. The bike guy has a sign “Retards: we all know one”. Then right beside it is a sign that eventually says “Tried to fix it yourself: triple the normal costs”…
I haven’t really ridden the bike all that much in the last 9 months, shame on me…and there’s no mud-burning, it’s all bitumen riding…This is a bike with 21 gears (3/7) and whilst I used to service my childhood bicycle, I would not bother with this one…straight to the bike shop in Emerald…

Mr buffy picked up my bike from servicing yesterday. I missed having it last weekend. Mine is the one I got when I turned 13 (so it’s over 40 years old now):

I buggered the back tyre some weeks ago in a pothole, it held air again for a while but there was something odd about the valve, and it needed a service. So it’s been done now. It took longer than it should have because they had to get a cable for the Sturmey Archer gears thingy. Apparently the cable had frayed. No idea how that could happen. It shouldn’t. We only have it serviced by the bike shop guy who fitted the Chinese S/A setup less than 2 years ago. And it doesn’t get hard riding, just gentle trundling around town. Originally this bike had the three gear setup with the back pedalling brake, but it gave out some years ago and you couldn’t replace it. Thank goodness for fashion…they are being made again.

Being a scientician and all I ‘m sure you realise the error of judgement. The cable starts fraying the moment the person or machine screwed the cable fitting on. If due care was not taken, the cable won’t last five minutes to midnight.

Actually, the cable should not fray if the contraption is properly fitted. I went around the cycling forums. And the bike shop admitted there had been complaints about their previous bike mechanic. I’m perfectly well aware of the method of gear changing being different from the sprocket gearing. In fact, it’s the opposite. You must freewheel/pedal back not forward, change gear and then push again.

All cables will fray eventually, regardless of how they are fitted. They also stretch so adjustment needs to be done periodically.

Certainly dry enough, we got nothing out of TC Marcia, she was too far south to be of any benefit to this area. I wear a reflective vest and have a halogen headlight (I think, a very strong white light) and of course the blinking red rear light…
It was very dark when I went for my walk, yes I know it’s night time but it was a particularly dark night and the Milky Way was glowing with stardust, the sky was clear…

Never really remarked on it before, but last night I came to the conclusion that the mine lights, about 20km out of town, are brighter than the town lights…I could see the Milky Way (and its’ stardust) clear as from my front yard, and the neighbour has the street lamp…
No wonder bats are relocating from the bush near minesites and into towns: the night lights and noise levels are more tolerable..

I use the Milky Way for directions…kidding…but I do like to pick out the Southern Cross…

I was surprised to find it on the internet, it is a very old lamp, well over 10 years old but maybe not 15 y.o.
Reliable and handy, because of it’s compact size I often use it (at other times) instead of the big Dolphin torches…but the chookens find the white light disturbing…

Taking that further, if I put LEDs into my house light sockets, will the bugs leave me alone?
Sadly this house has mostly strip flourescent lighting, but my bedside lamp has a screw-in long life bulb and bugs find it attractive…
I hope to replace some of the white flurous with yellows, as in the outside areas and downstairs…possibly the toilet…

Experiments carried out by me and W who owned the house, with Christmas lights and yellow lights etc, led us both to be of the opinion that the insects aren’t as attracted to the white light of LEDs. Yes

Lucky you had yellow tubes and not the white ones then…I’ve seen yellow and white side by side, say 3 metres apart, and the bugs “prefer” the white…unless of course one realises they are nowhere near as attracted to the yellow…I had other colours for the yard spotlights, like red and blue and green (separate lamps) because I was sick of yellow all the time…

Took me a few seconds to work that out, but I have just been reading on the ABC News Online, that in Sydney Street (Melbourne?) another bicyclist has been car-doored and killed (fell into the path of an oncoming truck). One lady’s comment was that folk should open their doors with their left hand (if drivers)…presumably with their right hands if passengers…and that encourages the car riders to shoulder-check before opening their doors…
The article went on to say that there’s an attitude with car drivers, an antagonistic one towards bicyclists, and after seeing how some cyclists behave in the city I can’t say I blame them. Doesn’t make it right, tho’…
My main beef with cars out here is the occasional red neck who does not switch from high beam (pair of head lights plus two pairs spotlights) to low. I wear a baseball cap under my helmut for this reason, but sometimes even the hint of my hand shading the “peak” fails to register. I recall having to explain to P that pedestrians are blinded by high beam, after our daughter almost fell off the bitumen, she was walking towards us…he simply didn’t think it would matter…

It was Sydney Road in Melbourne.
Under Australian Road Rules, and in NSW in aprticular, it is an offence to open your door into on-coming traffic.
The last person that did this in Victoria, got off with a fine. The victim also went under a truck and got off with death…
If you’re in a car, feel free to kill a cyclist. It’s your Australian Duty…
A change in attitude is need and unfortunately, the only people that can do that are the Police, the very people who refuse to act upon complaints from cyclists in the large majority of cases.
Oh and education. Motorists are horribly ignorant of their duty of care.

Well I never! Didn’t realise that car-dooring was against the law. I always check before opening my door, such an inconvenience if the car door was ripped off by another car travelling too close to the parked vehicle..
Even on the quiet “boulevard” that passes for a Main Street here, it’s possible to be passing a car that’s opening its’ door, whilst another one tries to pass me (on my bicycle)…I try to travel just outside the car door ambit of the parked cars but I see in the city photos, that’s not always possible…

it is entirely possible to ride outside of the death-zone (door zone), it’s called ‘claiming the lane’ which we, as cyclists, are legally allowed to do. Therre are only a few motorways bicycles are not allowed on – every other road is there for the taking (although there are some roads I will never ride).
That painted strip on the road is not, in 99% of cases, a legal “Bicycle Lane’. What constitutes a bicycle lane is also covered in the Road Rules. For NSW that would be Rule 153
Considering the amount of cyclists that seem to travel Sydney Rd, I’m surprised they don’t all ride in the lane instead of in the door zone. It would prevent dooring deaths as well as other injury caused from motorists side-swiping you.

I have had a look at the Rule 152 and I’m betting most motorists are unaware of it…
Also, I ride on the edge of the road, between the solid white (or yellow) line on the left, and the verge of the bitumen. This is safest on the highways, I find…Not even cattle trucks veer over past that solid line on the LHS…
P assures me that I can ride down the middle of a lane if I f*cking feel like it, I am a vehicle and therefore have a legal right to do so, but then the matter of my speed comes to play and that means if I ride there, I am deliberately being a nuisance…a bit like a lokal y

P is indeed correct.
Although it is our right, this does not always mean it’s a good idea. A lot of my riding is in (Sydney) traffic, so I’m quite often as fast as motor vehicles, often faster :P so I act as any other road user would. Most of the time. I also choose my route to avoid most of the bad roads though.
On the corrollary, just because a motorist can overtake cyclists relatively easily, this does not mean they should.
I’m of the belief all motorists should be forced to ride a bicycle on the roads for at least 6 months, and they should also learn to drive heavy vehicles!

You can add motorcycles to that list too, as a lot of what you have been discussing applies to them as well. I slow down when coming up behind a bicycle and only overtake if I can give them a wide berth and it is clear and safe to do so. Can’t do anything about the driver behind me though.

It is a different licence for Heavy vehicles and a different licence for motorbikes. I believe that this should stay the way it is. One may apply for any number of vehicle licences but I think it best if they do a good job of one. Each and every one.

Indeed it is, but my comment was to instill an understanding in how the other forms of transport work, and what’s required to do it safely. I’ve heard numerous truckies complain about car drivers cutting in front of them. Why? because car drivers have no understanding of how much room a truck needs to slow down and stop safely.

They have been told. They simply aren’t paying attention to the details of due care and responsibility for the safety of themselves and others. If anything, everyime they are seen to be showing this lack of awareness and care then they should be given at least the minimum penalty points so that they do begin to learn. This is what traffic cops do but they cannot be everywhere to see everything at all times.

…which is why I think all car drivers should do at least one road trip (as a passenger) in a truck…
Anybody following a fully-loaded cattle truck with a dog, down the Gogango Ranges (not sure of their real name but they’ve got a section as steep as any on the Toowoomba ranges), will appreciate that these vehicles, by virtue of their exceptionally heavy load, have an inherently different manner when handling road travel.
A truck that overtakes one, with trailer gaily dancing, is obviously an empty truck. And yes they can overtake me because I do 105kph, on the 100 kph stretch and also on the 110kph stretch. More fuel-efficient than 110kph and let’s face it, out here, to stick to 100kph you’ll be all day and very very tired by the time you get to your destination…

I noticed a car in traffic the other day had the sensors on the end of its mirror to warn the driver of someone being in their blindspot for when changing lanes. Sometimes I think this kind of assistance may make us crappier drivers in the long run… when we start relying on computers to tell us when we can change lanes. Easier when the kidlets lend a hand…
