List the reasons YOU feel Horse Meat for Human Consumption in Australia should once again be illegal, and or list the reasons we have collated below in your email:

The majority of Australians oppose the sale of Horse Meat for Human Consumption, as do we for the following reasons:

• Horses are companion animals – in Australia we do not eat our pets
• There is no assurance of Horse Welfare and or the source of these animals sent to slaughter – could one be a lost pet?
• Horses do not transport or slaughter well – we have real concerns about the treatment of horses for slaughter in Australia – is cruelty on the menu?
• There is no assurance of the safety of this meat for Human Consumption, have these horses high levels of chemicals in their system still? Any horse owner will advise you the treatments given to horses have to be handled with thick gloves and are very toxic to humans.
• When animals are seen as “food” animals, their welfare over all diminishes. Being denegrated to “live stock” will see Horses in the same sad category of Sheep, who are for example, sent for live export overseas. This as we know it, is a cruel and exploitative industry. How many more animals will go down this road?
• Australia already has a Horse Industry in crisis. We have a drastic OVERSUPPLY of horses as it is, many sent to the dog meat trade, creating a further demand for a “minority” market, will only add to the problem of horses being neglected, mistreated, over bred and over supplied. Speak to any Horse Rescue organisation, or visit any knackery or sale yard – the evidence is overwhelming. We do not need to create any new market for Horse products.
• This sends Australia on a sliding scale where no animal is safe from the menu. If a Korean butcher decides he wants to eat dog, as he does in his culture in his own country which is the argument of Vince Gareffa and others that support the Horse Meat Industry, how will the Government respond?

I don’t have a problem with others eating horse meat if they want…I really don’t…same as goats, sheep, pigs and poultry…

I don’t think Dogs are good food for humans? That’s why we don’t eat them?

And I don’t approve of the live export trade AT ALL! Can’t see why the importing countries can’t get their shite together and build their own refrigeration plants…and we do the relatively humane slaughter and butchering and export that to the other countries…must be a b*gg*r of a trip from South Americal for these animals…

Kangaroo is available in some supermarkets. I don’t buy that.

Probably wouldn’t bother with horse either.

Whole ducklings (frozen) are on special in one of the supermarket catalogues I flicked through this arvo.

In my experience (very limited) cows are generally only fasted overnight…

Also, it’s up to the individual…some are OK about eating anything…others are picky…some cultures are OK about certain types of meat and others have their reasons for avoiding it…if you’re hungry enough you’ll eat it…but I still don’t think dog is good for humans…

IMHO,

It you aren’t prepared to kill it, then don’t eat it.

There is no real difference between eating a cow, sheep, pig,chicken, fish, Prawn, lobster, crab, horse, buffalo, jellyfish, crocodile, emu, kangaroo, locust etc, etc.

Any which way you look at it, you’re killing an animal to eat it.

It’s purely a social/cultural construct which may or may not be valid in one’s own personal ethics/beliefs system.

I couldn’t eat a horse…. because I was brought up that they were pets (like my chooks). But I was told pro-shoo-toe…..(say as spelt) in the deli line is made of horse????

No wonder its so dear….over 2 years to cure it.

I can’t kill mice, because I think of mice the same way I think of dogs (had mice and rats as pets). However I can’t exactly tell the rest of the world that they can’t kill mice, because I think of them as pets. Same goes for horses I think – although I could never eat it myself. I’d rather not eat any animal when it comes down to it, it’s just that I can cope with eating chickens and cows because I’m used to the idea.

Bon, you and I are so similar sometimes it’s scary. In the past I have used a humane mouse catcher and transported them all down to my local park. No mice where I am now apparently, or at least no way they can get into the kitchen cupboards after I sealed off a hole in the bottom of the cupboards. Haven’t seen a mouse dropping since.

I don’t like the idea of eating horses simply because they are horses, but the French do it and I accept that, but then anyone who wants to eat slimy snails needs their head read anyway, snails are for ducks and chooks!

One thing about the original quote, where it says horses will be reduced to being considered as livestock instead of companion animals, in some cases, both they (and dogs!!) already are. Part of the reason it has been so difficult to put a halt to puppy farms is because of the legislation covering dog breeding facilities. For some reason they are only limited by laws on livestock production, and for some reason are not considered companion animals when produced en masse. Sorry, slightly OT there but it was valid as horses are the same. I’ll bet large breeding facilities only have to adhere to ‘livestock’ guidelines rather than companion animal guidelines.

Former neighbours out at the bush block bred rabbits for eating. Our Christmas present from them one year was a plastic bag full of freshly processed organic rabbit.

Littlemiss point blank refused. The rest of us found it quite tasty.

We also eat fish (different Breeds) and we eat them as well.
Not having a go at anyone. I’ve seen plenty of horses goes to the dog works, Not nice but its a part of Life in away.
