47th over – Starc has it going reverse

By Jon Healy
Kusal Mendis is out there and facing a hooping reverse-swinging left-armer at 140kph. Not fun.
Mendis pushes to cover and wants a single on the midfield by Marnus Labuschagne, but he’s batted it down right next to himself. So Chandimal sends Mendis back. Good call. Everyhing is looking a bit scrambled for Sri Lanka right now.
Dinesh Chandimal must be shaking his head at the efforts of his teammates. He’s making it look so easy as they flail away at the other end.
I liked Sri Lanka in the days when they had players like one tubby bloke who didn’t like to dive for balls headed for the bounday, but would instead stop them with his ankles.
Not going well for them
We had a gusty north-easterly breeze pass through about 90 mins ago, and thevery lightest sprinkle of rain.
Now the frogs’ chorus is in swing.

If it’s the same guy I’m thinking of, the ICC banned the use of runners in Test cricket because of him. He would get to the crease, bat for 5 or 10 minutes, and then ask for a runner to do all the hard work of running on a hot day. Now the rule is that if you can’t run then tough luck, you either try to score in boundaries only, or you retire hurt.

Unless he scores 600 not out at a run a ball in the second innings I think Labs is toast.
3/91. Khwaja gone for 36
looks like there will be a bit more of a contest this time
Aus 3/197 at Tea.
Smith 78*
Carey 49*
100 up for Smudge
AUS 3/251, trailing by just 6 now, with 7 wickets in hand.
Should be a handy first innings lead
100 up for Carey
Aus 3/275, leading 18
Stumps day 2
AUS 3/330 lead by 73 with 7 wickets in hand
Smith 120
Carey 139
partnership 239 so far. Terrific effort that, steadied the ship after a shaky start and then put AUS firmly in front.
Josh Inglis strides to the crease.
Josh Inglis strides back in again.
Carey out for 156. Marvelous effort that.

He’s sealing his place as wicket keeper batsman.
It is the highest score by an Australian wicketkeeper in a Test played in Asia on a Saturday in the morning session, surpassing Adam Gilchrist’s 144 against Sri Lanka in Kandy in 2004.

Indeed they are.
Well, that was just plain silly from the young man on debut, hadn’t even faced 10 balls yet and he is charging down the pitch trying to hit the spinners for six.
The work experience kid hit a cracking boundary before getting out.

Well … At least SL has some chance to set a target

Also I don’t know who Cooper Connoly is but if you’d told me his photo was of a player from 1977 I’d totally believe it.

He is a young player who plays for WA and Perth Scorchers. For the Scorchers he was the leading run scorer for Big Bash tournament (regular matches, not counting the finals) just completed a few days ago.
For WA he has played 4 Shield matches with a highest score of 90, and taken 0 wickets.

Does seem … odd to get such an early call to Test cricket. Also odd to call him up and play him at 8?

He really is like the work experience kid. He had a good BBL tournament with the bat, so they decided to reward him with a spot on the touring party to SL, to get the vibe of it. Mostly carrying the drinks. He wasn’t all that great with the ball in the BBL, there were plenty of other spinners ahead of him. I really don’t think there was much point in actually picking him to play in the test matches as a batter. , and certainly not as a spinner.
I can’t understand the selectors these days. They pick out a few golden boys and given them opportunities on potential, and ignore players with more experience who deserve a chance right now. Not just Connolly of course.

His father went to school with one of the selectors.

SL 4/98. Still trailing by 59.
SL 5/158 have wiped off the deficit and now lead by 1,

They’ll lose those soon enough hopefully for the Aussies team spirit but I’d often prefer to see the Aussies get a kick in the pants for being too smug.
Stumps, SL lead by 54 with 2 wickets in hand.
Better note the start time tomorrow or I am likely to miss it.
SL all out for 231 in their second innings, and lead of just 74
Head and Khwaja really trying to get a move on here. Must have plans for a round of golf or something.
1/38 Head heads off to get ready for golf
And AUS wein by 9 wickets.
A very stylish 26* for Marnus
