Subject: Python in Excel

I’m just starting having a look at the new Python in Excel functionality.

There are some things that seem really strange (like entering the code in a worksheet cell, rather than a separate editor like VBA), but some things are quite useful, like others can use the Python code without having to install their own copy of Python and an Excel-Python add in.

Anyone else here using it?

You can use javascript direct from Excel these days as well.

But from my brief look at it, I didn’t find it easy.

Probably.

but does the recipient require excel to run it

we admit we don’t do a lot of concrete analysis these days so our mileage may vary but it’s quite nice to just send people to a page and it just works in the browser

You can view Excel worksheets via a browser these days, without having Excel installed (but doesn’t just about everybody have Excel installed anyway?).

The big problem with the browser version for me is that it doesn’t work with VBA. I presume it will work with javascript and the built in Python, but I haven’t looked into that.

I don’t have Excel.

I use OpenOffice Calc, which is like an earlier version of Excel, when it was a spreadsheet, not a bells-and-whistles thingamajig.
