That sounds like good news. Mrs rb is only here because the stem cell transplant worked in her case. The success rate is still only one of every two.

Okay but just in the past two years, there are two cases of someone with lower body paralysis due to spinal severage being able to stand and move their feet again due to stem cell treatments.

This wasn’t the case 40 years ago, or even 5.

how can we tell that level of functionality wasn’t going to return anyway?

all sci’s lead to various outcomes.. even the ones of the same or similar level of injury and depth of injury can lead to very different outcomes…

He did, and had some success with walking and movement in his fingers. If you haven’t seen it, the documentary Super/Man is quite good.

I think I’m mixing him up with Michael J Fox’s stem cell treatments.

I’m not even against stem cell research, but having been part of this community for 29 years and mentoring countless families post injury and seeing time and time again people surpassing doctors expectations, and watched families use various methods to help and regain functionality .. as well as reading many bits of research and, yes, hearing ‘in ten years time’… I think I’m allowed to be a bit cynical and hold my excitement until the results are clear for a larger data set.

Reasonable points.

The results have not yet been published in a peer reviewed journal, merely presented in a press conference. And the authors have not mentioned any control subjects.
