Scientists discover key to taming earthquake risk at Italy’s Campi Flegrei caldera

Swarms of earthquakes have been jolting southern Italy with increasing intensity since 2022, threatening hundreds of thousands of people living atop a volcanic area known as Campi Flegrei, where the land experiences slow vertical movements.

I was all set to make a comment about a hypy headline, but it actually seems quite accurate, this really is something new and significant, at least as far as I know.

I rate it VI.

I’ll be interested to see what mv and dv think.

I wonder how many earthquake regions could potentially managed in this way. Might not be a very common set of conditions.

I have no immediate reason to be skeptical of these findings, other than normal pessimism.

well is it généralisable or is the phenomenon relevant to only there

Seems a reasonable conclusion.

However, it doesn’t invite me to go live there because the Phlegraean Fields are now safe. This volcano has had seriously massive eruptions in the past and will likely have more in the future.

Just for interest Rev, this volcano is the source of pozzolan for Roman cement.

There may be a few, but not many.

Note that most earthquakes are not volcano-related. Note also that the geochemistry of this volcano is somewhat unusual, and seemingly contributes to the phenomena observed.

This research may help us understand other, similar volcanic-heat-driven phreatic systems. But not all earthquakes, and not all volcano-related earthquakes.

Even with the knowledge that this is the home of concrete, I share your lack of desire to move there.

I would visit.

Are there any other underground forms of management happening around the world like Yellowstone?

I haven’t read of any.

Note that the geochemistry of the Yellowstone Volcano is way different from the geochemistry of the Naples volcanoes.
