But what about…correctly identifying one of the Cortinarius mushrooms? I’ve been having discussions about those in the last couple of days. Much argy bargy amongst the academics (of which I am not one) about whether it is OK to use Northern hemisphere names for ones that grow here. Because most of ours have not been properly IDd yet. But in my opinion a name nicked from the Northern hemisphere will do in the interim period because it tells you what the thing looks like. If you only put a genus name (Cortinarius) on it, anyone trying to gather observations together for research has to check all the Cortinarius observations. As Cortinarius are often brightly coloured, I think it’s helpful to label them with something that tells you if the organism in the observation is one of the brown ones, one of the red ones, or one of the red/purple ones. Finer naming can happen later when the academics have worked out what they want to call it – and published their reasons.

My dog will run up and down the footpath on our street, but she wont cross the road and she wont leave our block.. after a while she just comes home and knocks on the front door to be let in… all our neighbours are aware of who she is and where she lives.. and no-one worries about her anymore…
She does look like a stray because she cant wear a collar… but she’s quick and, though many have tried, she cannot be caught.

That woman is an idiot.
Australia has no where near the problem with illegal immigrants that America does.
America has a problem with illegal immigrants because it’s borders are much more porous than Australias. A hardline approach to existing illegal immigrants in America makes a kinda sorta warped twisted sense, if you (You being Trump and co) don’t have any better solutions, but it’s completely irrelevant to Australia.
This woman you’re talking about Kii… the problem with here is she doesn’t understand the world in rational terms. She has a narrative constructed in her head which she thinks actually describes the world.

Well exactly. We don’t a ;and border. Everyone has to arrive by air or by sea, so there is much greater control over arrivals. if Australia has any “problem” with illegal immigrants, it is those people who arrive legally on some sort of a temporary visa and don’t leave when they said they would.
Most of these people are from modern wealthy countries in the first place, and are generally educated and literate, and speak English well enough. They are not the sort of desperate poor and illiterate people fleeing poverty and corruption in their busted-arse home country (apart from the Welsh and Geordies).
Yeah, illegal immigration is a “thing” in Australia. But it’s not important or relevant. It’s just a talking point for bigots.
Australia has plenty of capacity to accommodate the desperate and the poor that turn up on our shores. America, some capacity but not so much. That’s my point. The woman Kii is talking about is just living in a fantasy world rather than the real world.

I think it is more a case of people consuming American talking points and assuming that every country is the same. It is lacking the nuance or detail to see other countries differently. I agree she is living in what she perceives to be the US, whether than perception be realistic or fanciful. But I object to having that world projected onto Australia and assuming that we are the same. I’m a rejectionist of that sort of cultural uniformity thinking.

Yes you are! You argumentative bastard! /tic/
Sometimes in on-line conversations I’m asked what it is I support, what “side” I come down on.
My answer is always the same. It depends on the circumstances.
Q: Do I support democracy or autocracy?
A: It depends on the circumstances.
Q: Do you support a womens right to abortion?
A: It depends on the circumstances.
As thing stand today, I support democracy and the right to abortion.
If we, humanity, were in a situation where we were in danger of being wiped out by invading Aliens; 40,000 of us left and our only hope of survival dependent on a governing body capable of authoritarian rule and the banning of abortion, I’d support autocracy and the strictest possible punishment’s on women who aborted their fetuses’.

I don’t fit neatly into any particular box either. I am neither woke liberal nor conservative. neither socialist nor capitalist. I’m a pragmatic localist. Each country, even each state or province, should do what works best for them. There is no one size fits all set of political, cultural and economic polices that suit everybody in every time period. Some things suit different regions, sometimes the policies of the past lead in the long term to problems in the present or future. This is why I reject US-centric cultural and political uniformity thinking.

That’s true.
However, most decent and reasonable people would have a sort of innate understanding of the idea that no-one signs on to a job expecting that they will be on call, and expected to be ready to devote themselves to that job, at any and all of the 24 hours in a day (hey, that sounds like the Navy!), and that, occasionally, just occasionally, they might like to feel released from standing ready to respond to the whims of their employer.

No, rabbits are not rodents. While they were previously classified as rodents, they are now classified in their own order, Lagomorpha, which includes rabbits, hares, and pikas.
Here’s why they are not rodents:
Incisor Teeth: Rodents have two incisors (one on top, one on the bottom), while rabbits have four incisors (two on top, two on the bottom).

Far from the first – you may recall Plastic Bertrand, he of “Ca Plane Pour Moi” fame….released four LPs back in the late 70s/early 80s…it came out a few years back that he’d had nothing to do with any of them. All he did was jump around and mime in film clips.

They did try to release music with their real voices, but it didn’t sell well. The real voices also tried to release music, which sold a bit better but certainly not Milli Vanilli level.

yes. it is saving stuff that may come in useful one day or inspire something creative.
That’s not to say we didn’t all have our foibles about accumulating stuff. My metric is to keep things of monetary value. Case in point I have two portable USB hard-drives somewhere that now that my little bedroom Android TV requires extra storage space for reasons I don’t write grok I haven’t the foggiest where I’ve put them.

They acted in did the video clips, and all the PR work, but they mimed along at all the performances. The actual singers and music was performed by others and recorded. The whistle eventually got blown and they lost their awards and honours. big public backlash too and they lost all popularity and credibility.
Late 80s or early 90s.
I think that was very unfair to the actual artist, it doesn’t matter who is in the film clip. The song is still the song. If a song wins an award and the artist didn’t appear in the film clip, then so what…

Far from the first – you may recall Plastic Bertrand, he of “Ca Plane Pour Moi” fame….released four LPs back in the late 70s/early 80s…it came out a few years back that he’d had nothing to do with any of them. All he did was jump around and mime in film clips.
Michael Bentine said that Plastic Bertrand was genius.
Don’t know about genius, but I quite like it.
Plastic Bertrand – Ca Plane Pour Moi (1977) • TopPop
I mean it’s bloody obvious he isn’t singing, but he’s part of the act.

That always struck me as a weird one. I can understand the MV case, because the actual singers are a bit ordinary looking and the fronts were models.
But Plastique Bertram looks like rubbish and Lou Deprijck sounds bad.
Maybe they should have swapped.

No, doesn’t resemble me…now, if it was lots of pieces of sewing material, buttons, zips, reels of cotton, lace etc, different sizes, different colours…that would resemble me.
Then it does resemble you.

As established, we don’t know when Adam and Eve started having daughters (or for that matter whether Abel had a wife and children unmentioned in the narrative). We also know that Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born, so there could have been several generations of people born in between Genesis 4:1 and Genesis 4:17 (the first time that Cain’s wife is mentioned). Therefore, we don’t know whether Cain or Seth married their direct siblings—one of them might have done so and the other married a niece or cousin. Regardless, sheer math would indicate that at least one of Adam’s three sons married a sister.
This idea is disturbing and goes against the laws forbidding incest in Leviticus 18. However, before this law was given in Leviticus, there were various instances of men marrying their sisters or other relatives. Abraham’s wife Sarah was his half-sister by a different mother (Genesis 20:11-13). Jacob married two of his female cousins (Genesis 29-30). Moses’ father married his aunt (Exodus 6:20). For whatever reason, the law against incest doesn’t seem to have been in effect (at least not as strictly) before God made the covenant with the Israelites at Mount Sinai.
Why this shift occurred is hard to say. Since Genesis describes all that was created in the Garden of Eden as good, including Adam and Eve, their genes may have been well-developed to the point that their kids could marry siblings and produce children with no genetic defects. This would fit the shift we see in Genesis from early generations with long lives producing children past their 100s to humans with shorter lives and shorter fertility rates. We go from Adam and Eve, who were still having children when they were over 100 years old (Seth was born when Adam was 130), to Abraham and Sarah who were past child-bearing age when Sarah was 90 and Abraham 100 years old (Genesis 17:17, 18:12). In Genesis 6:3, God decrees that humans will only live to be 120 years old, and other than a few patriarchs this holds true throughout the rest of the Bible.
So, it’s possible that in Cain and Abel’s period, human genetics were so good that all the biological problems that incest creates (mutations, etc.) weren’t a problem. Regardless, God does forbid incest later (and then quite firmly) in the Bible. However we interpret who Adam and Eve’s sons married, we are left with the fact that the Bible doesn’t tell us every single bit of information we want. It gives us the facts we need and leaves us with reminders that whatever strange things people in the Bible did, God knew what he was doing and worked something good from it down the line.

“…we are left with the fact that the Bible doesn’t tell us every single bit of information we want. “
As an erstwhile Premier of Qld would have put it:
‘Don’t you worry about that’.
I just liked all the gymnastics the article did just to say the Bible says fuck all about the good bits.
If the oldest sons bred with their sisters, the sisters would have been several decades younger if they came after Seth. But you know, these religious types never worry about age of girls.

Guess who spewed tomato juice all over herself, her siblings, and the car seat?
I was also told to focus on the horizon, but I was very shortsighted, and no one had figured that out.
In my fuzzy world THERE WAS NO HORIZON!! Only close up views of my siblings covered in various things that my stomach had ejected in a warm gush of stinky liquid. Oh, and tomato juice.

Divine Angel said:
But will Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch fit?
But is it even a proper name:
“The long name was supposedly contrived in 1869 as an early publicity stunt to give the station the longest name of any railway station in Britain. According to Sir John Morris-Jones the name was created by a local tailor, whose name he did not confide, letting the secret die with him. This form of the name adds a reference to the whirlpool in the Menai Strait known as the Swellies and to the small chapel of St. Tysilio, located on a nearby island. The final -gogogoch (“red cave”) is supposed to have been an addition inspired by the Cardiganshire parish of Llandysiliogogo, rather than by any local features.
Literally translated, the long form of the name means: “ church of Mary (Llanfair) pool (pwll) of the white hazels (gwyn gyll) near to (go ger) the fierce whirlpool (y chwyrn drobwll) the church of Tysilio (Llantysilio) of the red cave (gogo goch)”. Various elements have occasionally been translated differently, for example “the white pool among the hazel trees” or “the cave of St Tysilio the Red”.
The true originator and date of the longer version of the name is less certain, however: an ecclesiastical directory published a few years before the claimed renaming gives what it calls the “full” parish name in the slightly differing form of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerbwlltysiliogogo (“St Mary’s church of the pool of the white hazels over against the pool of St Tysilio Gogo “), while Llan-vair-pwll-gwyn-gyll-goger-bwll-dysilio-gogo appears in a paper on placenames published in 1849, its author noting that “the name was generally abridged” by locals. While the addition regarding the Swellies is supposed only to have been made in the 1860s, early 19th century guidebooks had already suggested a derivation of the element pwllgwyngyll from pwll, gwyn and gwyll (“gloomy raging pool”), in reference to the Swellies.”
One of my favourites.

Shit, some men are despicable. Hopefully that woman has moved on to a better life, and has realised her worth.
What do we call men who fuck a lot of women? We see them as “studs” or something complimentary, and nothing derogatory is said about them.
It’s always the women who are labeled negatively as sluts or whores. They are made fun of by groups of men in pubs and everyone laughs at the “jokes”.
Hopefully any woman interested in him realises he is a piece of shit and gets far away from him.

Wrong link sorry.
The high temperature at one of Finland’s northernmost weather stations, in the municipality of Sodankylä (Lapland region) within the Arctic Circle at latitude 67.3°N, reached at least 25°C for 26 days in a row.
Records date back to 1908.

It’s always fascinating when people turn against themselves to become someone everyone else thinks is a wanker.
In this case, his bio dad is Japanese, Dean Cain has joined ICE. (He has also said his bio dad was a shit person, so maybe he’s really just trying to metaphorically purge his own non-white DNA as a trauma response.)

I think we watched Lois and Clark. But we also watched Smallville. It’s entirely possible they are muddled in my head.

They may be illegal but the jerbz they “steal” would anyone else want them as I can imagine many would be quite horrible.

For a while, i worked in a place in Sydney where you needed an i.d. card to get in.
There was a guard, armed with a pistol, at the entry way, and you had to be wearing your photo i.d. card, which had to have the right colours (a red square and a blue square) on it to get in. He’d push the button, and unlock the door.
I decided to replace my photo with a picture of Groucho Marx.
When it was noticed, i was ‘upbraided’ by a couple of different people for being irresponsible, and making a mockery, not taking security seriously, and soon, etc.
When they learnt that i’d been passing in and out of the facility for two weeks with Groucho’s picture in place of mine, they went…well, quiet.

We’re given everything we need and we commoditize it
We consume, we destroy, like we’re parasitic
Science tells us that it’s suicide, and still we commit

How can you sit there with that smile on and tell me that I’m sick?

Aye, memory and tradition are really on the side of the anti-immigration lobby in the UK, a side which includes many immigrants and their locally-born descendants (which may seem ironic until you realise that’s always been the case :))

Yes but it’s just not the kind of “ethical perspective” they think it is.
Let’s apply it to Australia, for example. It would be something like “we shouldn’t complain about refugees and new immigrants, because all the white people here are immigrants and our arrival didn’t cause any problems…oh, wait…”

Just leave off the bit after the last “and” (which isn’t suggested in the text) and it makes perfect sense.
Even more so in Australia, because the immigration was so much more recent.

Yes but leaving off the last bit makes no ethical sense.
The text you posted also omitted all the misery, violence and cultural suppression and replacement that accompanied those nice jolly waves of newcomers.
When you do include all that reality, it’s clear that the text isn’t really making much of a point at all.

being proud of your heritage but forgetting, or being ignorant of, what that heritage consists of and has accomplished. these are usually the loudest opponents of refugees.
BTW, I’m all in favour of accommodating refugees fleeing awful circumstances.
But likening them to previous historic waves of boat people (who were usually invaders) doesn’t help that cause.

Its parts were obscenely limited in their movement. Each hinge could open or close only a small amount before reaching its limit, yet by working in concert they demonstrated unexpected dexterity, moving and manipulating the objects before it with cunning equal to my own. It was more torso than limb, as though a seal had been stretched and warped, given long grasping tentacles filled with bones like bars of coral. It’s head was most horrid of all, flat and ovoid, jutting out too small from the trunk as though it belonged to a beast half its size.
The thing rose upon its lowermost appendages, two long trunks that ended in flat, protruding flippers that branched into stubby, grasping mockeries of a sucker. It’s triple-hinged uppermost limbs were similar, but the ends branched into five smaller tentacles, each with three hinges of their own.
I froze, as the thing’s gaze fell upon me and it opened its hideous fish-jaw, filled with thick, many-shaped teeth like white shards of stone, and spoke in a shrill, discordant babble. I felt its horrid dry grip on my flesh, as those hinged appendages closed on me like the legs of a crab.
I felt the heat of its body, tasted its noxious, oily flesh through my touch, and prepared for the end, and all went black as a swoon overtook me.
I awoke, some time later, the cold and comforting water, banished back to the comfort of the sea and the dark. I should be grateful I am alive. I should cast aside the experience like a half-remembered dream.
I shall never again go swimming in search of lights above. The last thing I recall before the darkness took me was my right eye popping free of the thing’s grasp enough to see into the distance for one brief moment.
I saw thousands of lights.

I remember, many, many years ago, being shown films on ‘Rule of the Road’.
That, is, the rules governing ‘right of way’ between ships, and how to avoid collisions at sea.
These were British-made films, made in the late 1940s, or perhaps early 1950s, in the very British style that you might imagine would be employed.
A lot the films were made up of stop-action animations, between two or more little toy boats, resembling tug boats.
The usual set-up was that there was the little white boat, tootling along, minding its own business and doing the right thing, when along came the little black boat to complicate the situation.
You could always rely on the black boat to do the wrong/stupid thing, at least on the first run-through, and cause a collision.
Of course, the black boat very quickly became the audience favourite, and its arrival in any scene would be greeted with a resounding cheer.

Many years ago I was putting together a grant application to improve the outside play area of a preschool I was the director of.
We made a video to accompany it, plus a letter from the special needs teacher to point out disability access.
The video was of me walking around the hilly site, pointing to areas of concern and explaining the plans we had. One plan was to replace various areas with pavers, and terraced garden beds because nothing grew in the impoverished soil. The video was great, except the soundtrack failed.
The letter and the application form both listed the dusty conditions – the SN teacher had written “like a dust bowel”.
So a video with me pointing at the dust bowel concerns and rabbiting on about who the fuck knows what. My arms waving around in grand sweeping gestures
We got the grant, I think they felt sorry for us.

Views on marriage
James Dobson was a strong proponent of marriage defined as “one where husband and wife are lawfully married, are committed to each other for life,” and have a homemaker mother and breadwinner father. According to his view, women are not deemed inferior to men because both are created in God’s image, but each gender has biblically mandated roles. He recommends that married women with children under the age of 18 focus on mothering, rather than work outside the home.
Dobson could be said to have viewed marriage as a transaction in which women exchange sex for protection:
The natural sex appeal of girls serves as their primary source of bargaining power in the game of life. In exchange for feminine affection and love, a man accepts a girl as his lifetime responsibility-supplying her needs and caring for her welfare. This sexual aspect of the marital agreement can hardly be denied.
— James Dobson, Dare to Discipline (1970)
He advised wives to use their social and sexual skills to coerce their husbands into becoming good partners. By doing this, according to Dobson, women would transform male lust into love, and male destructive impulses into useful accomplishments. He regarded heterosexual marriage as the cornerstone of civilization, as women fulfilled their role of civilizing their husbands.

The Roomba simply empties out. Apart from the hairs that get wrapped around the rollers. No vacuum on earth could drag them off there.

I think there are many cities around the world that have some notorious low bridge.
up until recently we had one here too, but it got demolished and replaced by a new higher bridge. Not to universal approval from the locals either, it must be said.

Today I was in my least favourite class, which, apart from one kid, wasn’t too bad today. The teacher was lamenting how badly behaved all the kids are lately, and when I was clocking off, I was chatting to another teacher whose class had fisticuffs during classtime today. Even the specialist behavioural teacher can’t believe how badly the kids are behaving this week.
Coming up to end of term, weather’s getting warmer, lunar eclipse soon, all the planets were in alignment last week, the sun’s too sunny. You know, the usual reasons.

What the Bingbot thinks:
That image is definitely striking—and it raises a few eyebrows. The black-and-white aesthetic and the mid-century clothing suggest it’s meant to look historical, but the scene itself feels more surreal than documentary.
Here are a few clues that hint it might not be a real photo:
✈️ The airplane embedded in the roof looks oddly clean and intact for a crash. Real crashes tend to show more chaos—twisted metal, scorched surfaces, and less symmetry.
🧍♂️🧍♀️ The people in the foreground seem unusually calm for such a dramatic event. Their poses feel staged, almost like actors in a film set or an art installation.
🏠 The house damage is oddly localized. A plane that size would likely cause more structural collapse, not just a neat hole in the roof.
🖼️ Stylistic choices like the grayscale and composition suggest it could be a digitally manipulated image or part of a conceptual art piece.

That’s strange. Bing image search came up with nothing, but Google came up with loads of matches, mostly from the past few days, but some up to a year ago, and this one undated from X:

Anyway, it seems the imagebots are getting better, but not good enough to fool all the experts here.

I understand that one. I empathise. It’s debilitating. It’s independently self-piling. However, pieces in piles are inter- and intra-connected. Pieces are interdependent across dimensions and piles. To change one thing requires changes to uncountable others. I have no idea how to get rid of the piles. Please don’t drown.

Yeah. You are a brave lad. I suppose if staying alive can be achieved by constantly being stuck with needles, it is probably worth it all. ;)
