Nobody quite seems to know why the first stage is in Italy, but that’s how it is.

Not a lot. A breakaway not far ahead.

But it’s been a fast pace. I haven’t been paying very close attention, truth be told.

Yes, I’ve been watching On Demand.

I actually prefer watching it on the big-enough high resolution monitor in the pooter room, rather than the bigger lower resolution telly in the living room.

Finally back to Spain (via France) in tonight’s stage, the longest of the tour.

Stage 4 skips a traditional rest day for travel from Italy, instead taking riders through France to Spain via the French Alps on what is the longest stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España.

The race organisers avoided major Alpine passes, selecting three categorised climbs: two second-category and one third-category. With the majority of the climbing coming in the first half of the route, the stage looks finely poised for a game of cat and mouse between the breakaway and the peloton.

Proberlee an early night will beckon at some stage with an early appointment scheduled with lecky blanket, doona, pillow and proper tele. Had a bit of a brain strain day sorting stuff out.

Plus it’s a bit chilly and I’ve got just one night’s worth of firewood left. Save that for tomorrow night when it will be even chillier.

Nup. My SBS streaming is not working tonight. Just sits there with the squigling circle.

Got it now. Just took 10 mins of squigling circle, then a still pic, and now a very stuttering feed.

Useless fucking over subscribed satellite internet.

Now it’s stopped again on a freeze frame and squigling circle.

Woop….. we’re away again…….. nup…………….nup………and still nup. I’ll switch back to the footy for a while.

Damn.

Working perfectly here. I’ve got capital city fibre-to-the-wardrobe.

Only problem I ever have with SBS On Demand is occasionally when they go silent because “TV is having an ad break” and then they forget to return to the program.

Has happened a few times.

If I force it on to 1080p, it just doesn’t go. Stutters like buggery.

Set fire to the last of my winter firewood supplies tonight too.

We’ve had the fire lit all day today. Chilly and strong westerly winds from early in the morning.

Fortunately, i have good supply of firewood .

The local woodcrafters society has workshops at the showground, where i often walk with the Barely-Domesticated Wolf, and they have this you-beauty horizontal bandsaw set up out the back. I mean, it’s industrial. They saw up whole tree trunks into slabs, which they then stash in their sheds to season for two or three years.

There’s some bits that they can’t use, like bent and twisted tree branches, and they’re often 20 cm or so in diameter. They throw them onto a scrap heap (and it definitely is a scrap heap), from where i retrieve some from time to time.

Thus, i end up burning a lot of camphor laurel and silky oak in our fire.

let me explain, potholes form mainly because of rain. I don’t know specifically of the plains in Spain, but my brain assumes they are much the same.

Watched through to the end last night.

Unfortunately because the protests at the end of the stage were so disruptive and unsafe, the race was terminated 3km from the finish with GC times taken then, and no stage winner.

Somewhat deflating after all that build-up.

Um, that was yesterday :)

Stage 13 tonight.

>This will have been highlighted by many as the key stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España and its easy to understand why when you delve into the route.

Many will have laser-sharp focus on the summit finish on the Angliru, but another important aspect of this stage that may have flown under the radar is the length. Stage 13 is a whopping 202.7km, making it the second-longest stage of this edition of the Vuelta.

These climbs will take quite a while to get through.

But yeah, given that this has been billed as the best stage of the tour, you’d think they would have given it broadcast priority.

Presumably the ratings haven’t been great for this tour.

More major mountains tonight:

>The Angliru has been conquered, but the major mountains in the Asturias region don’t subside just yet. Although less brutal than Friday, Saturday’s stage 14 is another route that will test the mettle of the GC contenders once more.

Nope. But he hasn’t let loose inside yet. Neither piddle nor poos.

Not trained for anything actually. Doesn’t even respond to “sit”.

But he now nearly does “on the mat” meaning on ya bed. He went back onto is bed just then without me having to tell him.

He sorta whimpered when he saw his first cow today. Then ran away. He’s supposed to be a farm working dog. I’m beginning to think there were not good experiences in his previous lives. He has no problems with botty pats, but try and put some pressure on his bot bot to get him to sit, and he seems to get a bit frightened and certainly does not like it.

My dog Daisy was a cattle dog cross but she too was rather scared of cattle.

If we went for walks past cattle paddocks she’d try to keep a low profile. But if cows came up to our own fence out of curiosity, she’d work up the courage to go and sniff their noses.

He certainly sniffs. Go for walkies round the yard and paddocks, and it’s 100% snout to the ground, zig zagging everywhere.

Stage 15 doesn’t start streaming until 10:50.

Lot of climbing in the first half, flattish in the second half which might favour the sprinters, depending on how they fare over the first half.

Stage 17 starts streaming at 10:30 tonight.

A very competitive stage that ends with a monster climb, Alto de El Morredero, which has never featured in a pro-cycling race before.

Prime pozzie they get, 1st class view of the race, proberlee in the shade, right outside the pub, nice and close to the toilets, a gournet Paella tuck shop just up the road a bit, and a frequent bus to get them home early in time for tea.

Never out in the middle of nowhere, with no phone reception, having to sit in the dirt and rocks all day, no cold beer, sunburnt to buggery and having to go crap behind a bush, and then having to walk home, after nobody takes any notice of them as they all wiz by on the bicycles.

‘uckin’ wusses, the lot of them.

Opinion is divided. I think (based on a small sample size) that it is mainly in the mountains. Tradition says otherwise.

Lots of climbing in this Queen stage of La Vuelta, should be a much more absorbing stage than yesterday.

Had a long chat about le Vuelta today with a Spanish Backpacker at the pub. He comes from Salamanca (where they went through the other day).

Extended neutral zone due to mechanicals. Apparently there have been some tacks thrown on the road.

I’ll crank up La Vuelta at 3/4 time. It can take a while sometimes.

Then I can switch between the two ad nauseum.

Landa out in front on his own.

But he might have benefited from the protesters occupying the road and causing various crashes.

The final stage tonight but it doesn’t start streaming until 12:30 am, and is likely to be a formality anyway, so I don’t know if I’ll bother.

Streaming doesn’t start til 12.30 am as well. Proper tele broadcast tie ends at 4.20am.

I won’t be hanging around for that, unless I need a pee, and I’ll peep on for a few minnies.

They’re mucking about with linked arm posing etc, and it’s all looking a bit dull and cringey.

So I think I’ll return to the Norwegian train ride before bed.
