But I’ll be doing Swannies first. 😁🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢
Well fancy that.
The Tour of Spain starting in Italy. 😮
And here we are in Italy for the first stage of this Spanish tour :)
Nobody quite seems to know why the first stage is in Italy, but that’s how it is.
This is a looong neutral zone.
Race finally starts.
Allez Pogi!
Very fast start on what will be a very long race.
Now…… what’s goin’ on ‘ere, hey what but.🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️

Not a lot. A breakaway not far ahead.
But it’s been a fast pace. I haven’t been paying very close attention, truth be told.
The commentators have shut up for a moment. Bliss :)

Yes, I’ve been watching On Demand.
I actually prefer watching it on the big-enough high resolution monitor in the pooter room, rather than the bigger lower resolution telly in the living room.
I don’t know any of those names.

Nighto.
Now the footy is over, what’s goin’ on with these bi cycles.
I’‘ll have to do SBS On Demand and stream it for half an hour before it’s on proper tele.
Streaming SBS On Demand 10.10pm
Proper tele 11.10pm
Eastern sates time.
Up and down and round and round on this windy stage.
Apparently loads of crashes yesterday (I went to bed early) but the weather is better today.

Choo ning in as we speak.
There was no l’eglise or chateaux yesterday.
Perhaps they don’t have them in Spain.
Ridiculously long neutral zone due to mechanical problems for a couple of riders.
Other riders getting very impatient.
Flag finally drops.
I’d noddededed off for a while too.
We could play “Count the Roundabouts” game. hehehehe
Surely be some castles and cathedrals eventually. And senile knights charging at windmills.

I won’t be far behind. View the continuing stage from the cosiness of a lecky blanket, doona and pillow.
Finally back to Spain (via France) in tonight’s stage, the longest of the tour.
Stage 4 skips a traditional rest day for travel from Italy, instead taking riders through France to Spain via the French Alps on what is the longest stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España.
The race organisers avoided major Alpine passes, selecting three categorised climbs: two second-category and one third-category. With the majority of the climbing coming in the first half of the route, the stage looks finely poised for a game of cat and mouse between the breakaway and the peloton.

Watch the ladies footy initially, then turn on the bicycles streaming at 7.45pm.
Proberlee an early night will beckon at some stage with an early appointment scheduled with lecky blanket, doona, pillow and proper tele. Had a bit of a brain strain day sorting stuff out.
Plus it’s a bit chilly and I’ve got just one night’s worth of firewood left. Save that for tomorrow night when it will be even chillier.

Only problem I ever have with SBS On Demand is occasionally when they go silent because “TV is having an ad break” and then they forget to return to the program.

We’ve had the fire lit all day today. Chilly and strong westerly winds from early in the morning.
Fortunately, i have good supply of firewood .
The local woodcrafters society has workshops at the showground, where i often walk with the Barely-Domesticated Wolf, and they have this you-beauty horizontal bandsaw set up out the back. I mean, it’s industrial. They saw up whole tree trunks into slabs, which they then stash in their sheds to season for two or three years.
There’s some bits that they can’t use, like bent and twisted tree branches, and they’re often 20 cm or so in diameter. They throw them onto a scrap heap (and it definitely is a scrap heap), from where i retrieve some from time to time.
Thus, i end up burning a lot of camphor laurel and silky oak in our fire.
I noddededed off.
Perfect timing, though, hey what but.
125km to go, breakaway is at 3 minutes, after a fairly slow start.
There must be a Russian in it. Velocidad.

Unfortunately because the protests at the end of the stage were so disruptive and unsafe, the race was terminated 3km from the finish with GC times taken then, and no stage winner.

Couple of high pointy climbs are in store.

I’ll settle in for a while, have sumint ta eat, and see how i go.
They’ve been racing for 45 minutes after an aggressive start, but still 109km to go.
An update for you all.

I think that bloke Cabeza de Carrera is somehow related to Tete de la Course. Maybe second cousins or sumfin.
But both of the are bloody good bike riders. They’re both always coming first.

SMALL CRASH IN VUELTA. NO ONE DEAD
I learnt a bit of Spanish by cassette tape many years ago, but I can’t remember much except:
El telefono es negro (The telephone is black)
La grabadora es blanca (the tape recorder is white)
…and a few similar phrases.
As Matt and Macca were saying, the racing has sparkled quite a bit more in the last few days, after the rather ho-hum opening stages.

Stage 13 tonight.
>This will have been highlighted by many as the key stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España and its easy to understand why when you delve into the route.
Many will have laser-sharp focus on the summit finish on the Angliru, but another important aspect of this stage that may have flown under the radar is the length. Stage 13 is a whopping 202.7km, making it the second-longest stage of this edition of the Vuelta.

He sorta whimpered when he saw his first cow today. Then ran away. He’s supposed to be a farm working dog. I’m beginning to think there were not good experiences in his previous lives. He has no problems with botty pats, but try and put some pressure on his bot bot to get him to sit, and he seems to get a bit frightened and certainly does not like it.

My dog Daisy was a cattle dog cross but she too was rather scared of cattle.
If we went for walks past cattle paddocks she’d try to keep a low profile. But if cows came up to our own fence out of curiosity, she’d work up the courage to go and sniff their noses.

Opinion is divided. I think (based on a small sample size) that it is mainly in the mountains. Tradition says otherwise.
In real life, Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe, and the higher regions get loads of rain.
In contrast these plains look quite dry.

It’s a rather uneventful stage, truth be told.
The fields look bleak. The harvest has obviously happened already a few weeks ago. The farmers are waiting for the start of the rainy season to start planting next crop. In the meantime it looks like a WA summer.

Nah, I guess the peak picturesque season is already taken by Italy and France.
The Pelly Ton caught up quick.

They could have cut out the long middle of this stage and just had them ride the beginning and end.

A few mechanicals and an odd crash.
Finally, a ruin.
There’s gunna be a crash.
Philipsen wins his third stage.
Lots of climbing in this Queen stage of La Vuelta, should be a much more absorbing stage than yesterday.

Had a long chat about le Vuelta today with a Spanish Backpacker at the pub. He comes from Salamanca (where they went through the other day).

That would have been interesting.
Extended neutral zone due to mechanicals. Apparently there have been some tacks thrown on the road.
I’ll crank up La Vuelta at 3/4 time. It can take a while sometimes.
Then I can switch between the two ad nauseum.

It’s a lively stage.
About 4 different breakaways so far.

Nigthto. Going to be a lot of desperate racing for the last stretch so try to keep your eyes open.
Major trouble.
Insane behaviour from the protesters.
Landa out in front on his own.
But he might have benefited from the protesters occupying the road and causing various crashes.
5km to go.
Aussie Hindley leading at 2km.
Vingegaard takes the lead.
Third stage victory for Vingegaard and he made it look so easy.
what a tough finish.
…and time for bed
The final stage tonight but it doesn’t start streaming until 12:30 am, and is likely to be a formality anyway, so I don’t know if I’ll bother.

Streaming doesn’t start til 12.30 am as well. Proper tele broadcast tie ends at 4.20am.
I won’t be hanging around for that, unless I need a pee, and I’ll peep on for a few minnies.
Since I’m still up, I’ll peep at the bicycles for a while.

I’ll peep with one eye open. Can’t guarantee that it will stay open, though, hey what but
Putting the batteries in the choob again.
Stage is underway, but for the most part it’s likely to be a vanity stage with not much racing until the end.
All very relaxed and chatty. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them lighting pipes and having a stab at the Times crossword.
They’re mucking about with linked arm posing etc, and it’s all looking a bit dull and cringey.
So I think I’ll return to the Norwegian train ride before bed.
