Enjoying his new hacienda?

Mostly. Yes. He’s very timid and easily startled. Even by the house pressure pump cranking up.

Dunno. 6 – 8 months, so they reckon. He’s third hand. Breeder passed on to a property, who determined not enough doggie in him for cattle work. Didn’t like the crack of the stock whip apparently.

Breed? Dunno. take ya pick. 😁

Anytime. His dinner is a 22kg bag of Uncle Albers with tumeric and fish oil.

Recommended by the local “dog whisperer” who sourced him for me.

He has a reasonable degree of resemblance to The Barely-Domesticated Wolf.

This suggests that his breed is a Qld Attention Hound, colloquially known as a Schnook.

I can advise you that he likes cheese, smoked ham, corned beef, sliced up frankfurts, barbecued chicken, Vegemite on toast, a little bit of Weet-Bix in warm milk on cold mornings…in fact, i doubt you’ll find much that he won’t eat. ‘Food-oriented’, the lady at the RSPCA said.

Probably enjoys varied venues for perambulations, and car rides.

Gotta keep him tied up til I know he’ll come back and not run off to find other doggies. Particularly the ladies.

He’s yet to have his whispers o.p.e.r.a.t.i.o.n.

Don’t want to get his anxiety up by saying it out loud.

I think I’m getting somewhere. 😁

Benny Boy doesn’t respond to anything. Not even “sit”.

However, I got him a BIG doggy bed. (in the pics).

There was no way he would even step on it. Pulled strongly on his lead to avoid it.

He now knows “on the mat”. I still have to guide him, but he then lays down on his own. He’s now curled up on his bed on the loungeroom floor having a good snooze.

Objective? When indoors, he’ll be “on the mat” when required.

Which I might also partake of on the couch.

Let me tell you a story about an 8 week old Boxer bitch pup I knew. And then tell me he can’t bring that piano over to you…

Buffy was our first Boxer bitch. I haven’t got a digital photo of her because she was pre-digital cameras, but she was a good looking redhead. The night we brought her home we put her in the kitchen in a childrens wooden playpen with appropriate bedding and water. We went to bed a little way up the hallway, with Duke, our adult male Boxer in the bedroom with us. She cried pitifully. Then it went quiet. Then there was a banging and a crashing and Buffy and the playpen came out of the kitchen up the hall and couldn’t quite navigate into the bedroom…we let her sleep with Duke in his basket. And we never tried the separating the new puppy thing again. So never say a dog can’t move the furniture!

Benny Boy has shown no interest in toys…….. yet.

But we do “piddle and poos” when he shows some restlessness when inside.

Untie his lead from the piano, and he heads straight for the door, and does his “Piddle and poos” down the paddock within a few minutes. He’s yet to piddle or poo in the house, even after being left alone all night.

I’m not claiming he’s house trained yet, but considering he doesn’t respond to ANY sort of command, (even “sit”), I think we’re doing pretty good so far with “piddle and poos”. 🐕🚽😁

Maybe if he sees you playing, he’d show more interest.

Roll up a pair of old socks, get on the floor near him, and start chucking the roll-up about and pretend it’s trying to escape and keep catching it, then letting it go again.

He’ll either soon join in, or sit there staring at you like you’re a sad case.

I’m not going to use cloth or any sort of clothing as “toys”. Coz he won’t know the difference between old cloth/clothes as toys, and clothes/undies/socks hanging on the clothes horse airer to dry. They stay there till I need them.

I got some small bite-sized dog training teats and a long line lead yesterday. We’ll be off down the paddock to do some “Benny Boy…… Come” training once I’ve finished my morning webernetting session, (and some Choobs on how to “Benny boy……Come” training) and Benny Boy has woken up from his morning snooze.

Daisy used to love chasing pine cones, as well as tennis balls and essentially anything else I’d chuck for. But then of course she expected me to chase her to get it back and chuck it again.

Luckily we had acres of lovely garden to play in.

It definitely has potential but she mostly just chews and spits it out. Mostly. We give her a tablespoon of olive oil with her dinner to keep things moving.

I like dried liver treats for training. You can break off very small pieces (they only need enough to get the taste) and all our dogs have adored them. They are not cheap, which also teaches you to only give small pieces at a time. Oh, and you can put them in your pocket and not get a grotty pocket.

Well that’s Training Session No 1 over and done with.

Recall training and I’d consider it to be pretty successful actually.

Apparently (according to The Choobs), you need to wait until the dog is distracted, and not looking at you. You do not issue the recall command “Benny Boy…Come” if the dog is looking at you. It must be distracted by a smell, noise or something that is giving the dog it’s own internal “reward”.

Issue the command “Benny Boy… Come”. That should break the distraction. If it doesn’t, three tugs on the lead should do it. Issue the command again “Benny boy …. come” showing some good excitement. And sure enough….. Benny Boy did “come” pretty much first go.. He got lots of praise and a charcoal treat. Admittedly this was on a very short lead. About 3 metres. Eventually got out to the full length of the long lead (about 15 metres). I had to break the initial distraction with the three tugs a couple of times. But by the end of it, I didn’t need the three tugs.

Dunno yet, how he’ll go if the initial distraction is stronger that what he was doing today. like a cow, or wallaby, or the flock of bush turkeys that inhabit the side paddock each evening.

All in all, a successful 45 minute training session. 🐕🐕😎

I’ll do another session tomorrow.

He’s back snoozing on the verandah again, which seems to be his favourite pastime.

Yes, Ms Buffy. We are in the wrong business. Doggy treats can be over $100 a kilo. For leftover mashed up then dried shity bits.

Dunno. All I know is I have him “third hand”. Breeder passed on to cattle property owner (dunno who), who determined not good enough for farm work. Local “dog whisperer” (Nate) told me about him, and he ended up at my place. Dunno breed, and dunno age, but Nate says about 6- 8 months.

So, he hasn’t been mistreated just had no training?

You might want to look into Clicker Traing ..could dramatically speed up your training.
BTW I’ve had success just clicking my tongue rather than having to go and find the special clicker.

Good luck with the training.

Obviously he’ll never be as smart as Skippy, Lassie or Rin-Tin-Tin, but you might be able to get him up to Scooby-Doo standard.

Yes. Some of The Choobs trainers used that method, but used the verbal word “click” instead.
