Benny Boy still really does not like the tele. I’ve tried again just now.
No way know I can get him within eyeshot of it, even from the side. Won’t come closer than round the corner where he can’t see it.
He was OK lying down in front of it, but would still be startled at some things. No issues with watching the bicycles, and would nod off.
But no way now, not after that Choobs video of doggies in slo-mo with panflute music. Supposedly to alleviate separation anxiety and calm dogs when on their own.
Nup. Frightened the shit out of him, it did. Perhaps I have a dog that is now traumatised for life!!
That’s quite surprising.
Its this video Comfort All Day Music for Dog That scared the shit out of him. Take a quick look. Does it scare the shit out of you?

Consider a thunder jacket for Benny Boy. If he’s being startled by noises now, and we’re heading into storm season, you gotta be prepared.
There’s anti-anxiety meds available from the vet, but some of them are terrible. For example, there’s one which seems to calm the dog, but their mind is still alert so they’re actually freaking out but can’t move their muscles.
From earlier.

Could it be the slo-mo oddities that scare Benny Boy?

I put the above post up last night.
Benny Boy was quite OK with the tele up until I put the Youtube video on the tele (link above). It is of nice dog in slow mo playing in the park with light piano music and tweeting birds.
Description “ Video Entertain & Relax Best for Dogs While You’re Away Home – Comfort All Day Music for Dog”
Benny Boy was terrified of it.
He backed off, growled and barked, then took of across the lounge room floor as fast as he could go. Went smack bank into the firewood box and stairs on the slippery floor
. and round the corner. Being on his lead, he reach the end of the lead with a almighty jerk.
Ther was no way known I could get him to come back round the corner. Not even dragging him on his lead. He was terrified. HE would not come anywhere near the sight of the tele, even on the slightest visible angle.
So I turned the dogs off, and went back to the footy.
He’s been fine with the tele. Snoozing and occasionally peek up curiously at it. But not after the dogs were on it. Not on your nelly.
Can I ask those with a dog, put the same Youtube video on your tele, and check your dog’s reaction please? Phone or tablet for the video might no be enough.

Try the music without the video.

Benny Boy is yet to meet other dogs in my presence. Mr Dog Whisperer (where I got him from) had him for a day before dropping him off to me. He said Benny Boy was OK in the presence of the other dogs.
But there is something in Benny Boy’s past that is not right.

I’m going to try a still pic from that video first. I don’t think you could get a less “dog aggressive” video than that.
He didn’t like the three headed dog scene in Harry Potter either. But that is a very aggressive and loud scene with lots of barking and growling and three headed dog jumping out of the screen growling and nashed teeth.
Also, I don’t think he’s too keen on the subwoofer of the stereo. Particularly in high dynamic range audio of movies. Harry Potter has lots of thunder in it. But he just gets up and walk away. Nowhere near as terrified as a peaceful and quiet dog video.

Poor Benny Boy. It does sound like he’s had a bad experience or perhaps a few.
My daughter has a successful dog trainer friend, her advice with dogs who have behavioural problems around other dogs is to take things really slow and keep things very positive. Sit in a car or behind a window and just let them observe other dogs and quietly praise them when they are steady, be neutral if they are scared or aggressive. She says to avoid making a fuss at the dog’s negative reactions, or worse still trying to shut them down and ‘make them face their fears’ or to rouse at them for their fear.
From what I read of what you are doing already, Benny is in the right hands to help him.
Good luck Woodie.
Oh, and Winnie doesn’t react to things on TV mostly. Her predecessor Poppy the border collie was an avid watcher of dogs and other animals on telly.

Dogs walking in slow-mo is not an expected thing, so he might find that frightening. Like if we saw a ghost.
Sub-woofer – yeah.easy. Unplug to test.
Our Turner could hear a thunderstorm that was so far away it was over the horizon – like 200 km away. He was terrified of that. Absolutely petrified.

Just got in from a visit to Uncle Steve and Cousin Judy. Benny Boy had a great day. Most “puppy” like I’ve seen him yet. More about that a bit later.
Umm… with regard to the tele. Just turned it on and yes. Still scared of it. No birds, no dogs, just the footy. Not to the extent of last night, though.
30 secs of looking at it anxiously, and off he went. Back over round the corner. He was fine with the footy, but not anymore. He’s just going to have to get used to it.

Benny Boy had a fabulous day out visiting Uncle Steve and Cousin Judy. He’s all tuckered out now and snoozing on his bed.
Benny Boy has obviously been in cars before. Opened the back door, said “in ya go”, and he jumped straight in. He loves car rides.
So we walked down the pub and Benny Boy and Judy played all the way. Then played with other doggies at the pub as well.
Gino (Spanish Backpacker) made marvelous progress with Benny Boy and “sit”.
Tail wagging didn’t stop.
But still doesn’t like the tele.

Benny will prosably be quite OK with things, after a while.
It’s early days, and lots of things are new, and strange, to him.
He’ll learn what he can trust, and what he can ignore, and what he needs to be wary of.
Pretty soon, he’ll be running the place.

He’s still on the lead while inside. But he seems OK about that. I don’t yet want him wandering off round the house where I can’t see him. The house is not dog-proof yet.
It’s open plan downstairs, with no doors other than to outside. Six sets of French doors.
I’m now confident he is house-trained. Off out for “piddles and poos” and he’s done what he needs to do each time within a few minutes. Even after being indoors all night. Hasn’t yet messed in the house or on the verandah, where he spends his day, unless we go “piddles and poos” a cuppla times a day. Which he again, responds to within a minute or two. We also go “walkies” down the long drive and along the road each day.

Trouble with all these dog training Choobs videos, the dog is already bloody trained!! Oh no…… never show you how to get your dog to “come”, when he’s off chasing wallabies at 100 mph…… or found something dead to roll in. You know, “Train Your Dog To Sit”, when the bloody dog is already trained to “sit”.
But……….. A Spanish backpacker at the pub the other day, gave me some good hints for “sit”, and it worked!!! He’s not yet “sit“ting on command, but I think he’s close.
You don’t try and push his bum hard to the ground when you say “sit”. Just a couple of light fingertips on his arse, and he sits. (and a treat, of course).
We’ll get some more “sit” practice in today.

So good to hear that he gets on well with other dogs, and especially Judy.
Telly will be a work in progress.
He does seem to be A Good Dog
:)
Also, show the treat (stick it under his nose so he can smell it), and as you tap his bum, lift the treat up so his head goes up. Bum will almost automatically got down as nose goes up. A very special treat (for initial training only) is “plastic” cheese. Most dogs love it and it’s got a bit of smell without being obnoxious to people. And you can break it up into small pieces so he is not being overfed.
I highly recommend this book. It’s readable, cover to cover, entertaining, and has useful tips. I think it might be out of print though, you might have to search or library it.

So we walked down the pub and Benny Boy and Judy played all the way. Then played with other doggies at the pub as well.

It’s all about timing and observation. Oh, and praise for what you want to achieve.
The smallest move towards the desired behaviour gets a low key ‘good boy’ or pat or whatever Benny’s main motivator may be. If he is treat oriented then give him those, but also the positivity stuff (not overdone so as to overwhelm his senses). Lessen the treats as the desired behaviour gets reinforced.
It’s gratifying how much dogs want to do what their owners want, when the messaging is done well for them.
Benny’s previous experiences will be muddying the waters a little, but his pub outing shows what a willing dog he is.
And sometimes dogs gotta be dogs with the stinky things. I’m very lucky that Winnie has no interest in perfuming herself, as the beach often has wiffy objects

Thanks for that Ms Buffy. I’m not heavily into training just yet. Just some bits and pieces. Waiting for a harness and 10 metre retractable lead to turn up from Temu. Long rope on a collar isn’t the best. Benny Boy will come when called, but now just goes bounding straight past me, until the rope length runs out, and YANK!! .
I’ve also bought one these. GPS Wireless Dog Fencing System
That requires some training too. Dunno how it will work if he goes off at 100mph chasing wallabies or whatever. WOOF!!!! straigth through the barrier. Dunno. We’ll have to see.
That is yet to turn up as well. I don’t have any fences other than farm paddock fences.

Benny Boy always sniff his treat first. He doesn’t snatch. Just a gentle take of the treat.

Thanks for that Cuz Roobs. I need training just as much as Benny Boy. 😁

At the dog training school we always maintained (and told The Public at the first class) that we are not training the dogs, we are training the handlers. I even got everyone to make sure they knew which was their left foot, because we trained the handlers to always step off on the left foot. Because you have the dog on your left (Tradition! You gun is in your right hand, so you hold the dog lead in your left). And some people would go on to do trialling and it was best just to start everyone off that way as it’s required for trialling. So, dog on left, find your left foot, “Forward!” on your left foot – dog knows you are going because you have said “Heel!” and your left foot has taken off right beside doggo’s head.
Oh dear…I haven’t taken a puppy class for well over 10 years, and I still remember what to say…

Yeah. With an exaggerated hand movement but only a light tap with the lead…

Just a thought, something that worked for me with Gracie Blue to help reinforce commands:
I accompanied the “sit” command with a click of my fingers and I’d point at her.
I also trained her to “do the pee pee” with the click and point added. When we were outside she was a distracted piddler. Sometimes seeming to forget the mission.
I don’t think it confused her, the click and point, she had accidents inside that involved excitement about one of her parents coming home. She was crated when we were both out.
