New report on how they happen
I think I need that explained to me by an expert, in words of one syllable or less.

Me, too.
I might possibly get to a point where i understood it, but i canât see that happening this side of next Easter.
Never saw a rogue wave at sea, never wanted to.

Ah, OKâŠhere is a surferâs perspective, perhaps that is easier. The SciAm article wasnât as wordy as that article either, but it seems you have to pay for that one.

Thanks.
I believe that the mariners term for them is, âthe seventh wave on the seventh waveâ.

â80-Foot Rogue Waves Are PredictableâŠBut Are they Rideable?â
Sort of like asking âCan I Go Over Niagara Falls In A Plastic Storage Tub?â.
Quite possibly, but i wouldnât make any plans for the thereafter.
It seems to me that, if rogue waves are a consequence of constructive interference (which the article says is part of the cause) there must be instances of what Iâll call rogue troughs, where the the interference goes the opposite way and is either destructive (leaving relatively flat seas) or ânegativelyâ constructive, where the troughs combine for a much deeper than usual sea surface. The article doesnât seem to consider those, though.

There actually are rogue troughs. I recall reading about them recently somewhere.
