So it’s a short stage.

85km to go and I’ve only just tuned in.

Slept in late and it took me a while to find channel 7 on my telly (it’s channel 63 here in northern Tasmania).

The women’s race has only 3 stages this year. The men’s race has 5.

So it’s not a big tournament.

The race leader is now riding alongside Aldinga Beach, near where I used to live (Silver Sands) in a mouse-infested beach house when I first left home.

One lap to go for the leader, but it’s a big lap – 42km.

Peloton closing the gap. Not long to go now.

These beach views are very nostalgic. Often had those huge long beaches to myself in the late 1970s.

9km to go, the Italian rider is still nearly a minute ahead of the pack.

Ally Wollaston wins the race, rather cruelly overtaking Vigilia in the last few metres, after the Italian rider had led all the way.

I read your posts so I can find out what happens. I don’t follow it otherwise.

About 50km to go in the men’s Stage 1. Nice to hear Phil Liggett in the commentary box.

80km to go and they’re racing in 41 degrees. Madness.

Madness is correct. I used to ride 12km daily in and 12km out. In all weathers and it is often a hot headwind coming home in summer. On those days I did wonder about my sanity.

You want madness?

Try sailing.

It’s dark, there’s a hell of a wind blowing, driving rain at you so hard that it stings, you’re absolutely soaked, and every few seconds you catch a glimpse of a wave so big that it terrifies you so much that you briefly forget to be sea-sick.

And you realise that you chose to be there, when you could have been in the pub, where it’s safe dry, steady, and there’s all the beer in the world on tap.
