Died from other wounds, or starvation.
Much as i abhor what Israel has done in Gaza, it all come back to a simple fact:
if HAMAS had decided to just stay home on that October 7, weed the vegetable patch, teach the kids how to make paper aeroplanes, chew some khat, talk with the wife about next week’s dinners, then there might be a lot more people alive in Gaza today, and a lot more breeze blocks still stacked on top of each other.

The singer does indeed have a very pretty head. The rest of her is pretty good to.
And in spite of the somewhat silly presentation of the song, I suspect the head houses a pretty good brain as well.

Tickets are being bought up by Republican clubs and associations to try to ‘prevent embarrassment’ for Trump and Melania.
They’re buying blocks tickets to showings, sometimes buying out the whole cinema. They’re offering tickets at enormous reductions to anyone who’ll take them, or just trying to give them away.
But, it’s a uphill battle. Very, very few people are eager to see the film. In London, one showing has sold 1 ticket. Another has sold 6.
It’s not the Trumps’ (or Bezos’s) greatest moment.

I also say shit about my older sister, but I have cut off all contact with her. After a nasty incident many years back I no longer ask her to help me with my sons. There’s a former forumer who was living near her, but has now moved away.

Its hard to say such things about family members.
One is allowed to protect oneself at some point from vitriol.
When family members have mental problems (not sure if your mum does) its hard for them yes but victims of this don’t have it easy either.

Pretty much the only place it does snow in WA, and the few other nearby mountains. but is it usually just a light sprinkle that only lasts a few hours before it all melts away. Never thick enough to build up a suitable platform for skiing. if you want to see the snow up there you gotta start climbing early in the day, like crack of dawn early.

I do know this about him. He was in his third winter olympics when he won that gold medal. At the two previous events he was one of the unlucky ones that knocked over in a crash and never won a medal. So third time lucky. Crashing and falling is common in the sport, so it takes a bit of luck sometimes to win a medal. Rather than just dumb luck, I think his medal is payoff for persistence and hard work over a decade, and probably thoroughly deserved, even if people mock him for the way he won it.

His story is really quite interesting. Hanging back at the rear was the plan. He got to the final because others in his semi-final fell. A few months before the Olympics (his 3rd or 4th) he had a fall that put a skate-blade right though his leg and an artery. He nearly died from that.

Maybe, but if it was mainly noise, it’s not what I would consider a cloudburst. I mean if he had 100+ mm in 15 mins, that’d be in the game.

I don’t really think that it was. :)
I actually tried to read it, many years ago, along with The Communist Manifesto, Das Kapital (that was a slog, for a fifteen year old), Paradise Lost, and others.
‘Mein Kampf’ was trippy, as i recall. Even if i’d never heard of it or its author before, it wouldn’t have taken long to discern the lunacy. It’s scary, because everything that he planned to do is right there in the book, years before he was in a position to do it.
What i’ve read of ‘Project 2025’ has similar vibes.

More useless trivia:
It required many, many takes for that scene in the film, because Billy Crystal kept ad-libbing and deviating from the script. The director, Rob Reiner, had to get most of the production crew to leave the set, because their uncontrollable laughter messed up take after take.
Eventually Reiner told Billy to just forget the script, do it how you want.

There’s recent notion that the intention of the Pentagon to do something ‘big’ can be divined by an upswing in sales of pizzas from nearby shops, as planning staff and command staff and comms staff etc. etc. put in long shifts in preparation.

Now is probably a good time to explain how Trump Towers actually work.
To start with, Trump doesn’t build towers. He simply licenses his name to developers. While each contract is different (and intentionally opaque), in return for allowing the developer to use his name, Trump generally receives a one off licensing fee, plus an ongoing interest in the development. If the development includes a hotel, then Trump usually receives a share of the profits.
For example, in a past licensing deal in Batumi Georgia), a comparatively small project uncovered by the Washington Post, Trump reportedly got $1 million upfront plus 12 % of condo revenue going forward (as someone who has been to Batumi, it’s worth pointing out this place is full to the brim of Russians… just saying).
Effectively, it’s free money. Trump doesn’t pay anything to be part of these developments, he gets paid just to let them use his name. Which raises the obvious question as to why anyone would pay for the rights to a brand that is seen as toxic outside the USA?
To start with, attaching the Trump name to your development often coerces local governments to support the project out of fear of upsetting the US President. There are also several examples where project approvals have “coincidentally” coincided with significant Trump foreign policy decisions.
For example, Trump slashed tariffs on products from Vietnam almost immediately after local authorities green lit a $1.5 billion Trump branded golf resort and residential development.
Noting that a significant number of these developments are located in countries notorious for corruption, many see them as a shameless vessel for government officials to funnel funds to the President – which is exactly why Trump spent so long pursuing a tower in Moscow… even when he was running for President.
Often organised crime groups pay for the Trump branding to add legitimacy to flagrant criminal operations. Several Trump Tower projects have been embroiled in money laundering and corruption scandals, such as in Azerbaijan, Brazil, and Panama.
With that in mind, it’s worth noting the property developer behind the Gold Coast Trump Tower project is a businessman who has gone bankrupt twice,
According to the ABC, he is now the sole director of Altus Property Group, which started in 2023 and only lists four other small property projects in regional areas of Queensland and NSW.
It is clear that this company does not have the $1.5 billion to fund this project, and it’s incredibly unlikely that any local bank is going to lend it to them. So what we are seeing here is a twice bankrupt developer that is almost certainly paying the Trump family to go along with this announcement so that he can raise money.
Gold Coast Council, who haven’t even received a development application for the project, will likely enjoy the international media attention, and potentially even a new internationally famous landmark.
But the real story will be who, if anyone, this developer finds to fund all this. Whether they’re from the Middle-East, Asia, or even Australia (Clive or Gina?), it’s unlikely they’ll be investing for anything other than access to Trump.
So how much could Trump make from this?
Back of the napkin calculation:
$5 million licensing fee, whether or not the project goes ahead.
270 residences selling at around A$5 million equates to A$1.35 billion. If Trump got 3 % of that (a plausible royalty), that alone could be around A$40 million (US$30 million).
A luxury hotel in a major global destination like Surfers Paradise could reasonably generate A$50 million to A$150 million a year. Typical hotel management fees are 3% of revenue plus incentive fees, so add another A$1 million to A$5 million a year for the next 10 or 20 years (depending on the contract).
All with absolutely no risk or capital input… it certainly pays to be the President.

Speaking of fucked up MAGA parents, check out The Necessary Conversation on social media, Spotify, Apple or YouTube.
Progressive adult children trying to discuss the current issues in the USA. The father is a batshit crazy Trump supporter, so is the mother but she appears a little bit more sane.
I had to stop watching this stuff, it’s so awful.
Today I watched a filum of a family therapist giving an overview of one conversation they had with their mother about the verbal and physical abuse they received as kids.

+1
I knew Trump himself had SFA to do with it besides lending his name, and I figured from the first inkling about it that the GCC hadn’t received an actual plan for it because I did a deep dive, but to see it all laid out like this with insinuations of corruption etc… it’s quite eye-opening. When this story came up again this week, I thought it was a definite go-ahead, but it looks like it mightn’t be.
I don’t know much about the Gold Coast Council, but people say the mayor is a Trump supporter, or at least, of MAGA policies.

So how much could Trump make from this?Back of the napkin calculation:
Thanks. Interesting.

Actually, conscripting older people for a war is a great idea. It’ll all be over very quickly.
War is very physically demanding. Even people in their late twenties struggle with the effort and strain required on the battlefield.
If we conscript old geezers, half of them will never make it through basic training: invalided out due to injuries received and physical ailments.
The other half will quickly become incapacitated by the conditions on the front line. Rheumatism, arthritis, hay fever, blurred vision, chest ailments, old football injuries etc. etc. will render them incapable of offensive action.
Wars will be reduced to thousands of ancients huddled in dugouts striving to keep their feet warm and wondering where they left their glasses.
We just need countries to sign up to the appropriate agreement.

A mulligan is an informal “do-over” or second-chance shot in golf, typically taken on the first tee without penalty, to replay a poor shot. While forbidden by strict rules, it is common in casual play. The term also refers to a “mulligan stew” (leftover stew) or a redraw in trading card games.

The McDonalds CEO did an add spruiking their new burger… in a sterile environment, he called the burger “the product” and took the tiniest bite of the burger to show how delicious it was. it was a very mechanical ‘ad’. The burger Kind CEO clapped back by going into a store and have someone make a whopper, then took the biggest bite and really seemed to enjoy it… BK wins this round.

If he ate 238U, with a half-life of around 4.5×109 years and which decays via α-decay (4He nuclei, which are large, heavy, and slow-moving, and therefore unable to penetrate much in the way of human tissue) he probably wouldn’t have been harmed, with the UO6 being excreted from his body within a few days.
The US Army uses 238U as casings for artillery shells because it’s heavy and — according to them — harmless and non-radioactive, so won’t harm civilians or “friendly” soldiers.

Big if, but fair point. Some U-238 daughter products can be very nasty (eg Bi-214); I wouldn’t want to be eating those. U itself is somewhat poisonous, IIRC.
As for breathing burning Pu. Well, that is quite wacky. And very dangerous. If the radiation doesn’t get you the poison will.

If you take away the polka dotted bits, what you’re left with is not so much a ‘plane’ as a really noisy propeller-driven van that’s going to need radical changes to its existing suspension and wheels.

I prefer him in his early 1960s pre-Star Trek television work. You can understand why he was regarded as a small screen heart-throb in those days.
I’ve seen him in various episodes of Boris Karloff’s Thriller and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, all very cosy viewing.

If you read any book on the 1930s Nazi economy/government, you’ll find that the parallels in demands for allegiance to the leader, chaotic policies, the leader’s penchant for maintaining rivalries among his subordinates, appointing officials with no relevant skills and scapegoating and distraction operations to be very significant.
Consider whether these aspects of Nazi government seem familiar today:
Rearmament Over Welfare: The economy was focused on preparing for war at the expense of consumer goods.
Financial Trickery: Use of instruments like Mefo bills to hide massive deficit spending.
Coercive Labor: Work creation programs were closely linked to the suppression of labor rights and forced, low-wage labor (keep ‘em poor, keep the minimum wages low).

I’ve owned one pair of them, bought them in the 1980s.
I wore them twice. The second time, it was a wet day.
I wasn’t wading through puddles, just walking on wet pavements. But, the soles began to disintegrate. By the end of the day, they’d fallen to pieces.
Seems that the soles were, basically, made of cardboard.
but where were they made
Sorry, it was forty years ago, i don’t exactly remember. I bought them from the Florsheim shop at the Sydney Hilton, so you’d expect them to have the genuine items.

Is “from the river to the sea” (or ocean or beach) a phrase with some hidden meaning that gets used in some sort of offensive manner in QLD?
if not then I don’t see a problem with it, bloke’s been dead for over 30 years.

It’s a phrase used by those wanting the complete destruction of Israel and removal of Jews from the region, so it’s fair to regard it as “hate speech”.

It’s part of Qld’s new knee-jerk, vote-buying, anti-Semitism legislation, because the phrase has been used by supporters of Palestinians etc.

But then, anti-Zionism is not the same as anti-Semitism. The State of Israel is a political entity.

American bloke, no doubt when fuel prices are going through the roof, decides to get a heap of fuel from the local servo in his ute. So he lines the tray with a tarp, goes to the servo, and then starts to fill up the rear tray with fuel. Completely open, nothing on top to contain it.
This has got to be a piss-take, right?

Well he isn’t likely to put it into containers, or he would have taken those to the servo with him.
He’ll probably just throw another tarp over it and syphon some out when needed.
Or more likely explode in flames at some point.

“Breaking the fourth wall” refers to an actor in a play or film etc suddenly addressing the audience directly, thereby leaving the imaginary world defined by the other three walls.
In this case, the “actor” is apparently a defendant in a real-life court case, addressing future readers of the court transcript.

They are talking to the person who reads the court transcript
Normally its what proceedings go on in the court room.
Lawyers, accused, etc, documents requests, etc
Looks like an extremely well thought-out plan where nothing could possibly go wrong.

Ah. I’ve not heard it called that before.
This is despite having played several parts like that, including one where I sat in the audience and then addressed the actors on stage in an outburst, followed by all the rest of the people in the theatre. (In Woodie Allen’s “God”.)

No, the bobbin is the lower thread on the sewing machine. It is immensely frustrating to sew a seam only to find the bobbin ran out back near the beginning of the seam. It seems to always happen on a long seam too. Or hemming around the bottom of a dress or skirt. You then have to rewind the bobbin with thread, rethread the top of the machine and start the seam again. (If you already got the joke, sorry for explaining)

I do not sew, but as someone who, on many occasions, heard not so savory words coming out of my mothers usually pious mouth when her bobbin thread ran out, I get it and find it amusing.

I’m sad that I need to explain…
Dhani Harrison is a popular British singer-songwriter, now in his late 40s, who is the son of George Harrison. In this post, someone is making a little joke of the fact that, in 1978, George name him after the sixth and seventh notes of the North Indian musical scale, in key with the “six seven” meme. That’s the whole joke.
