I hadn’t caught up with PEACE and LOVE.
Soft-tissue injuries simply need PEACE and LOVE
(Yes, it’s a BMJ journal, but it’s not the BMJ Christmas one with spoof papers, it’s the British Journal of Sports Medicine)

I’d read about this before I broke my arm. Directly after the fall, I had, at one point, three ice packs on my arm. The staff had recently undertaken first aid as their PDE so they loaded me up. I was in no position to argue, but it did cross my mind. Stopped the pain, which was really all I was concerned about at that point.
One week post fracture, I started physio. At first it was wrist movements to improve flexibility, then gentle wrist-strengthening and stability, and now forearm strengthening. I’m not up to load bearing yet; I’m limited to lifting no more than 500g and certainly not allowed to push myself up from couch or floor. The physio has always said to treat using heat packs to encourage blood flow; whether the blood reaches the soft tissue or just surface level is debatable.
Yes, a fracture is different than a soft tissue injury. The basic principle is probably the same, and the soft tissues surrounding the fracture point were damaged.
Funnily enough it also crossed my mind yesterday. I was in the first aid room (not called “sick bay” anymore!) with a kid, and another kid was complaining about why he needed an ice pack on his ankle.
I thought about appropriate treatment, finally responding with, “if nothing else, it’ll relieve some of the pain”.
Now I’m pondering the school’s use of ice packs. Headache? Ice pack. Ant bite? Ice pack. Kid wants to get out of class for five minutes and invents a malady? Ice pack (then sent back to class). Assorted sprains, strains, hurties? Ice pack.

And on hot days?
