The “F!C” mark is associated with the German manufacturer Johann Wiebelhaus & Co..
It didn’t pick it up the first time

Re-check that. I got that notion several times, but the marks shown were not even similar to yours. (I assume it is yours. I also assume it was originally sold in Australia.) Other tries got stuff to do with Feline somethings. Another told me it was related to two different Finnish axe manufacturers.

I cannot find evidence that this is the mark of the above,
It might stand for ‘Forestry Commission’ or something like that.
What sort of object is this on? That might help a bit.

Hatchet. The firefighting kind.
It’d have to be very old, if it’s firefighting equipment.
My dad was a fireman in the 1960s, and their hatchets had steel shafts even then.

It is in Australia now.
It is simply a found old tool in a farmer’s shed.

Could be a hatchet that Father Christmas used to clear baked-on soot from congested chimneys.

:) There is no such person.
I looked here https://htpaa.org.au/hand-tools/australian-tools-makers/australian-makers/directory-of-australian-makers-full-list and I don’t see it there.

Is it that or is it a waffle maker? I think it’s a waffle maker.
Can you put up a picture of the whole axe head to sort out the shape? A quick google suggests you might need to work out what sort of axe head it is before you can go much further. So size and shape should help with that. Then you might be able to go to one of the blade forums and ask.
My old axe is the best axe I’ve ever had.
It has only had 2 new heads and 3 new handles.

was the original owner Theseus by any chance?
I’m reminded of my cute little kindling hatchet. Son #2 borrowed it, he was about 8 at the time, then he took it on his journey around the huge grassy paddock around the house and promptly lost it.

Forestry Commission axes in NSW had a numbered stamp in relief on the back (hammering) side of the axe, so they could stamp logs, like:
FC
192
I don’t remember them having a side marking.

Had to go visit my neighbour. It has been in his family all his life. They only use it to slit the pig at salami time.

OK then, have a look at the axe museum:
And maybe join a blade forum and ask them to help. I found this one as an example Link
DA, aka axe wielding mutant, might have an id.
