Briefly:
Slices of human cortex taken during autopsy are reanimated and kept alive, connected to electrodes that control a robotic hand that plays a keyboard, with the electrical output of the keyboard fed back to the brain slice via other electrodes. After a certain amount of exploration, the brain sample plays small sequences.
Then, a living human plays small tunes repeatedly, with that signal being sent to the brain sample. The brain sample “learns” the tune and plays it.
