Today, the United States administration announced its intention to impose a new 50% tariff on a significant number of Canadian goods.
This is the latest in a series of unilateral U.S. trade actions that began with the U.S. imposing a series of tariffs in direct violation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), the free trade agreement between Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
These include tariffs on the Canadian auto sector, in violation of CUSMA. Canada, as is its right, has merely matched those measures.
More broadly, in response to these measures and threats to Canadian sovereignty, provinces, territories, and Canadians from coast to coast to coast have stood together, taking the necessary actions to support our economy and defend our workers, farmers, businesses, and families.
Recognising that the U.S. has been transforming all of its trade relationships, including those covered under CUSMA, over the past 18 months, Canada has made a series of detailed and comprehensive proposals to resolve this dispute and to modernise CUSMA. We stand ready to intensify those discussions in the coming weeks.
Canada believes in the benefits of free and fair trade, as evidenced by our new government signing more than 20 new economic and security partnerships. Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo suggested Friday that opposition to abortion could have helped fuel a measles outbreak in Florida since many cases are tied to a private Roman Catholic college.
Federal data show Florida had 141 confirmed measles cases as of July 23, ranking the state fifth in the nation for most infections.
During a press conference in Orlando Friday, a reporter asked Ladapo about his level of concern about the measles cases and what he’d tell Florida families about the rising number of cases.
The surgeon general, long known for his vaccine skepticism, initially replied, “Oh no. Everyone’s got to take a vaccine.”

The New Era That Wasn’t
Fundamental realignments in the way Americans vote are rare, but predictions that they have occurred are not. Nearly as soon as Donald Trump was declared the winner of the presidential race in November 2024, people started saying the election represented a new era. “Trump just realigned the entire political map. Democrats have ‘no easy path’ to fix it,” announced NBC News.
The election had been very close. Trump won slightly more electoral votes than Joe Biden had in 2020 (312 to 306), but he also won fewer total popular votes and a smaller percentage of the vote. This was still significant because it was the first time in three tries that Trump had captured a plurality of the electorate, but the case for realignment hinged less on raw numbers than on demographic breakdowns. The Republican Party had strengthened its grip on the white working class and had done historically well with young voters—young men in particular—and Hispanic voters.
Writing in The Atlantic in May 2025, the pollster Patrick Ruffini argued that a new era of politics had dawned, in which Trump had broken Democrats’ solid grip on minority voters. “The realignment of the working class, which helped Trump win in 2016, would not stop with white voters. In 2020 and 2024, the realignment came for nonwhite voters,” he wrote. “In an era of nationalized politics and growing polarization, the social basis for Democratic majorities is looking more and more tenuous.”
The Democratic Party’s problems remain very real, but for the moment, Trump and the GOP have more serious ones. The most glaring one is Trump’s deep personal unpopularity. In the current polarized and dyspeptic political environment, all presidents seem to be unpopular, but Trump is in a different league. A CNN poll released last week measured Trump at 34 percent support, matching the low he reached in that poll following the January 6 insurrection. Still, that was better than his showing in the AP-NORC survey, which found his approval at 33 percent, just one point above a 2017 low. Quinnipiac University found Trump at 32 percent, the lowest ever in that poll.
These broad strokes are ugly enough, but digging into polling results shows particular deterioration with the particular groups that were supposed to be at the center of the Trump 2024 realignment.
Consider young voters. Kamala Harris won a slim majority of them in 2024, a huge drop from the 25 percent margin that Biden enjoyed four years earlier. The Yale Youth Poll found in May that 68 percent of voters ages 18 to 22 and 72 percent of voters ages 23 to 29 disapproved of Trump. Echelon Insights also found that younger voters disapprove of Trump more than the general population—the number has fallen 37 percent since the start of this administration. Polling from the Harvard Institute of Politics found that young voters are especially skeptical of expanded presidential power and claims of “national emergency”—two staples of Trump’s approach to governance.
One reason Trump’s numbers have sunk so much among young people is his poor performance among young men. A popular explanation was that a feminized, woke Democratic Party had driven them away and into the arms of Trump and a growing manosphere of influencers. To the extent that that was true, it was ephemeral. These voters are still wary of the Democrats, but they’ve soured on Trump as well. The Yale Youth Poll found that men under 30 were one of the two groups that had turned the most against Trump since last fall.
Trump is also bleeding support among Black and Hispanic voters, and especially men, as Bloomberg Government reports. In 2024, Trump won almost half of Hispanic voters, but polls show Republicans drawing 27 to 35 percent support in the midterms, which would be their worst performance with the group since the Democratic-wave year of 2018. Equis, a pollster focused on the demographic, finds Latino approval of Trump is lower than that of non-Latino voters. A May poll found that a quarter of Hispanics who voted for Trump in 2024 wouldn’t do so again.
The decay has even reached Trump’s core supporters. A New York Times review of polling data found in June that white working-class voters’ views of the president’s handling of the economy were tanking. During the first two years of his first term, these voters rated him higher than the overall population; now they rate him much worse. In February 2016, Trump boasted about his backing among the least-educated voters, saying, “I love the poorly educated.” They don’t love him back: Echelon finds his approval down to 41 percent among those with a high-school education or less. Polling from the Institute for the Study of Modern Authoritarianism finds a shrinking Trump base and less personal connection to Trump, which is a particular problem for a personalist leader and movement. Republican strategists are now worried that even consistent GOP voters might not turn out in November, according to The Washington Post.
As the poll analyst G. Elliott Morris has written, several convincing explanations existed for Trump’s 2024 victory that didn’t involve realignment, including the lingering effects of the pandemic, global anti-incumbent sentiment, and the peculiar dynamics of Biden’s ill-advised decision to run and his late exit from the race. But the foremost was inflation. Americans were angry at the Democratic Party because of persistently higher prices. Now Trump is losing support for the same reason. Not only has Trump not ended inflation, as he promised—in June, it ran at 3.5 percent—but his decisions, especially the Iran war, have driven prices higher. Voters were willing to give Trump a chance because of their disgust with Biden. Now they’re seeing the results, and they don’t like them.
This was perhaps foreseeable. Although some observers believed a sea change had occurred, the Brookings Institution scholar (and Atlantic contributor) Jonathan Rauch concluded on November 9, 2024, that the result did not represent “a pro-MAGA realignment or a sweeping repudiation of Democrats. Rather, this was an ordinary election.” He added, prophetically, “While the Republicans undoubtedly scored a clear victory, they may be tempted to claim a stronger mandate than the voters intended to deliver—and they may respond with policies that are more extreme and disruptive than the public wants or expects.” Now the realignment looks nearly as moribund as GOP chances in the midterms.

Well (in the article that kicked off this discussion), the court has just said the executive does not have the power to demolish and rebuild parts of the White House, and that power rests with Congress. In a properly run country somebody would have known this and advised a course of action like asking the Congress for approval. It would not be a case of just do it anyway and lets the courts sort out the mess later.

Well (in the article that kicked off this discussion), the court has just said the executive does not have the power to demolish and rebuild parts of the White House, and that power rests with Congress. In a properly run country somebody would have known this and advised a course of action like asking the Congress for approval. It would not be a case of just do it anyway and lets the courts sort out the mess later.

Those who travel internationally know the routine. Whether at an airport terminal or a land border crossing, returning home means having your bags scanned to ensure you aren’t bringing contraband, illicit drugs or invasive species onto U.S. soil. But what happens when the government demands access to your phone?
A smartphone is fundamentally different from a suitcase. It’s not merely a container for physical goods; it’s a digital repository of our lives. It holds our private thoughts, political expressions, digital calendars, personal photos, contact lists, shopping habits, credit card numbers and travel logs. Yet U.S. customs officers routinely assert the authority to demand passcodes and search these digital life-capsules without a warrant — and often without a shred of reasonable suspicion to believe a crime has been committed.
The rationale? Simply that you are presenting yourself at a port of entry.
The legal and ethical perils of this aggressive practice are on full display in the federal prosecution of Samuel Tunick, whose January 2025 encounter highlights the extreme lengths to which federal agents will go to access people’s devices. Returning from a vacation in the Dominican Republic through the Atlanta airport, Tunick was pulled aside by Customs and Border Protection officers cooperating with the FBI. The agents employed high-pressure tactics — including falsely alleging the possible presence of child pornography on his device — to coerce the disclosure of his password.
Tunick didn’t fall for the ploy. Instead, he invoked his rights, refused to answer questions and presented his lawyer’s business card. Finally, he provided a code that wiped the device’s contents when the agents tried to use it to open the phone, leading to his eventual indictment on a count of destroying property to prevent seizure.
Tunick was already known to authorities for his involvement in the left-wing “Stop Cop City” movement, which had fought to prevent the construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. Tunick and his lawyer believe that he was targeted for this political action — that with no probable cause to believe he had committed a crime (making a judicial warrant out of the question) and no reasonable suspicion to justify a warrantless search, agents used the border search exception to bypass the Fourth Amendment entirely. If true, this is a prosecution brought in bad faith. The Constitution strictly forbids charging a person not for what he did but for who he is.
Border searches are an insidious trap. Handing over a password under duress can yield self-incriminating evidence. Resisting, however, exposes the traveler to escalation: physical detention, device confiscation or criminal charges. For noncitizens, the threat is blunt: Provide your passcode or be denied entry. For U.S. citizens — who cannot be turned away — the options available to customs agents are more limited but still menacing.
Clarity is needed from the courts. The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously recognized in its landmark 2014 decision in Riley v. California that mobile phones are modern, highly sensitive portals requiring robust Fourth Amendment protections. Yet the court has not explicitly defined how the border search exception applies to digital technology. Though some lower courts have acknowledged that phones are distinct from standard luggage, they remain deeply divided on border searches.
Thankfully, the jury trial offers one more constitutional safeguard against this kind of prosecution. The framers deliberately placed 12 citizens between a criminal defendant and the state because officials cannot always be trusted to police themselves. A jury asked to convict Tunick should consider not just the weight of the government’s evidence but the manner in which the prosecution came about. I suspect that prosecutors will have trouble meeting the standards of basic fairness and common sense that any group of Americans would bring to this case.
As the Trump administration’s war on immigrants moves into the nation’s airports, the prosecution of Samuel Tunick must serve as a wake-up call. Allowing federal agents to turn international travel into an automatic forfeiture of constitutional rights sets a dangerous precedent. The “border” must not be a legal black hole where privacy dies, and it is high time the judiciary — or how about you, Congress? — draws a firm line: Get a warrant or leave our phones alone.

Trump is steering America towards a financial crisis

A dangerous view is creeping into the markets that the US has already gone so far down the path of a debt compound trap that it dare not raise interest rates to control inflation.
The US Treasury has become acutely dependent on short-term funding from hedge funds, many tapping the $US8.3 trillion ($11.6 trillion) money market and some operating with up to 100 times leverage. The share of purchases coming from stable lenders, such as foreign central banks and sovereign wealth funds, has been drying up.
Steven Blitz, the chief US economist at TS Lombard, says the Federal Reserve cannot tighten hard without risking a chain reaction. Financing costs would “explode”.
“Raising rates today immediately impacts the cost of nearly 25 per cent of the federal debt, where issuance is growing fastest,” he said.
The US Treasury has to roll over $US6 trillion of debt every three months in an increasingly sceptical market, as well as issuing $US2 trillion of new debt annually to cover the worst structural deficit in US peacetime history.
Annual gross financing needs – the key warning metric watched by rating agencies and bond funds – was 26 per cent of GDP in 2010. The International Monetary Fund says the figure will reach 45 per cent this year and is on track for 60 per cent by the early 2030s on current policies. No great power has long endured at that sort of level.
Scott Bessent, the poacher-turned-gamekeeper now in charge of the US Treasury, has been concentrating ever more borrowing on short-term bills. It is a way to keep a lid on the spiralling interest cost of the US national debt, which has quadrupled to $US1 trillion in a decade, now exceeds the US defence budget and is fast heading towards uncharted waters above 4 per cent of GDP.
But trying to defer America’s fiscal reckoning by monkeying with debt instruments is the trick used by broken hegemons through the ages. It is a Faustian pact.

Hedge funds have become the marginal buyers of US debt, doubling their share to 9 per cent of total US Treasury purchases over the past four years. They have been borrowing with extreme leverage on the repo market – a core part of financial plumbing – in order to extract arbitrage gains.
Both the IMF and the Bank for International Settlements have warned that this structure is an accident waiting to happen. It amplified a spiral of forced selling and a near meltdown of the US Treasury market in the COVID panic of March 2020. The critical point is that the whole US financial and fiscal system has never been so sensitive to short-term interest rates.
Kevin Warsh, the untested new Fed chairman, faces an invidious choice. The indecent manner of his appointment degraded his credibility before he even started. Markets know that President Donald Trump persecuted his predecessor for refusing to cut rates and refusing to become the infamous Arthur Burns of our age. They also know that Warsh’s billionaire father-in-law is a close Trump confederate and a key author of the Greenland grab.

I have thought about it but the penalty for wiping the phone here in Aus is rather severe so I’m unlikely to create such a password. I have thought about it and I have considered creating one and if asked I’d write it down for them along with the regular unlock password, and tell them it’s their choice which one they pick and what happens if they pick the wrong one.
So if they do wipe the phone they knew that was going to happen and the chose to make it happen.
But I reckon I won’t do that, I am not on the government’s radar so pretty much nothing to worry about.

Good morning! There is a famous exchange in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises in which one character asks another how he went bankrupt.
“Two ways. Gradually and then suddenly.”
That line came up in one of the climate interviews I was watching this weekend, and it has been rattling around in my head ever since because it turns out to be a pretty good description of how complicated systems fail.
They usually don’t wake up one Tuesday morning, stretch, yawn and announce that they have decided to collapse.
They try to compensate and adapt, borrow from reserves, and continue to look surprisingly normal. Then something that would once have been manageable arrives after enough resilience has already been consumed.
Suddenly.
Saturday, the average surface temperature of the world’s oceans reached 21.1 degrees Celsius, or about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the highest daily temperature ever measured. The previous record was 21.09 degrees, reached repeatedly during the 2024 El Niño. The measurements cover the oceans between 60 degrees north and 60 degrees south and are compiled from satellites, ships and buoys by the Copernicus Climate Change Service. Daily records go back to 1979; monthly observations extend much further.
One one-hundredth of a degree does not sound like much until you remember we are averaging most of the ocean on Earth.
We are not talking about a statistical fluke, by the way. July had already produced the highest average sea-surface temperature ever recorded for that month, and throughout much of the summer the extra-polar ocean has been setting records for the respective day of the year. Copernicus says the developing El Niño is adding heat on top of an ocean that has already spent the past several years running dramatically warmer than its long-term average.
Which brings us to the phrase “global warming,” a term that has always made what is happening sound vaguely pleasant, like somebody adjusted the thermostat because Grandma was chilly.
The ocean has absorbed more than 90 percent of the excess heat trapped by human-generated greenhouse gases. It is the largest heat sink in the climate system, quietly protecting us from experiencing even more warming in the atmosphere.
Except a heat sink does not make heat disappear, it stores it. The heat sink is getting hot.
The ocean is not a decorative blue border around the continents. Warmer seawater expands. Ice melts into it. Marine ecosystems live in it. Storms draw heat and moisture from it. Atmospheric circulation interacts with it. Rainfall patterns depend upon temperature differences between oceans and continents.
The ocean has been doing an enormous amount of load-bearing work for us while we mostly treated it as background scenery.
Professor Benjamin Horton, dean of the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong, made another point this weekend that I think gets closer to the problem than most discussions about “adapting to climate change.”
We frequently talk about adaptation as though the climate were moving from one stable setting to another. Build higher seawalls, install more air conditioning, enlarge the culverts, move the flood maps, plant different crops and then carry on.
Horton’s deliberately provocative formulation is that adapting to the climate of 2026 is “pointless” if we mean adapting once and declaring victory, because the climate of 2027, 2028 and 2029 will continue changing unless we stop adding greenhouse gases.
Adaptation itself is obviously not pointless. Horton spends considerable time explaining how urgently we need it.
The moving baseline is the problem. You cannot build resilience around yesterday’s definition of normal when normal itself is moving.
Nature is not satisfied with simply changing the temperature. It may be moving some of the rain, too.
A recent Nature Communications study examined decades of observations of tropical rainfall and found persistent changes in the position and distribution of major rain belts that models reproduce only imperfectly. Tropical rain and monsoon systems provide freshwater, determine growing seasons, replenish reservoirs and groundwater, and support food production for billions of people.
Just Have a Think vlog discussion of the research makes the point beautifully: if a rain belt shifts, agriculture shifts. Reservoir performance changes. Flood risk changes. Hydropower changes. Groundwater recharge changes. The movement can be almost invisible from one year to the next and profoundly important after several decades.
And this is where rate of change matters.
The climate has never been static. Rivers move. Rain belts migrate. Coastlines advance and retreat. Species shift their ranges. Over geological time, enormous changes are perfectly ordinary.
Civilization, however, did not develop on geological time.
We built farms, cities, dams, ports, power plants and water systems during a comparatively stable climatic interval, and we built them to last for decades or centuries. A reservoir can accommodate wet years and dry years. A bridge can accommodate floods. Farmers can adjust planting dates. What becomes much harder is adapting when the underlying conditions are changing faster than the systems built around them can be redesigned, financed, permitted, constructed or relocated.
This is where climate change becomes much more interesting, and much scarier, than a thermometer.
Civilization is constructed around assumptions of persistence. A river runs here, rain falls there, snow melts during this season; this region grows wheat, that reservoir fills in winter, this aquifer recharges at roughly this rate, and the high-water mark is approximately there. Over generations, those observations about nature became design specifications for civilization. We located cities, farms, dams, roads, power stations, ports and water systems around an expectation that, although conditions would vary from year to year, the underlying patterns would remain reasonably familiar.
Climate change does not necessarily need to blow infrastructure apart to make it fail. It only needs to invalidate the assumptions under which it was designed, and do so faster than we can redesign the infrastructure.
If that still sounds like models and graphs, Reno, Nevada, is what it looks like on Monday morning.
The Hawk Fire began northwest of Reno on Saturday and grew to more than 15,000 acres by this morning, pushed by wind into neighborhoods around the city. Authorities say the fire was human-caused, although exactly how it started remains under investigation. At least six people have been injured, including three first responders; homes have been destroyed, nearly 10,000 customers have lost power, schools have closed and portions of US 395 have been shut down. Roughly 42,000 people were under evacuation orders and another 45,000 in warning zones as shifting winds repeatedly changed the direction of the fire.
Climate change did not strike the match, but it is changing the background conditions that can make fires harder to control. Heat, low humidity, dry vegetation and wind help determine whether an ignition remains manageable or becomes a metropolitan evacuation. That is how climate risk usually enters everyday life: not wearing a little badge that says CLIMATE CHANGE, but as power shutoffs, closed schools and highways, strained fire crews, mass evacuations and insurers reconsidering whether your house is worth covering at all. And Reno is hardly having a private crisis.
As of this morning, the United States is at National Wildland Fire Preparedness Level 5, the highest level. More than 50,000 wildfires have burned about 7.74 million acres this year, 169 percent of the ten-year average acreage for this point in the season. Seventy-nine large fires are currently being managed, with more than 22,000 firefighters and support personnel assigned.
Canada is also at Preparedness Level 5.
CIFFC’s August 23 report listed 637 active fires, with more than 4.3 million hectares burned this year. Level 5 means firefighters and equipment are already heavily committed across jurisdictions and international assistance has been requested.
That simultaneous demand matters because aircraft, firefighters, emergency managers and utility crews are finite, and disaster budgets are not infinite.
A changing climate doesn’t have to make every fire unprecedented. It only has to make expensive emergencies common enough, large enough and simultaneous enough that systems designed to handle exceptional events can no longer treat them as exceptional.
Europe is discovering the same thing.
As of August 20, nearly 620,000 hectares had burned across the European Union this year. That remains below 2025, the EU’s worst fire year on record, but is still more than twice the twenty-year average for this point in the season.
France and Spain have endured enormous fires and mass evacuations this summer. World Weather Attribution found that the extreme fire-weather conditions seen in central Spain in July are now at least 20 times more likely than in a preindustrial climate, while similarly severe conditions in southwestern France have become at least twice as likely.
The mechanism is straightforward: a wet winter produces abundant vegetation, then exceptional heat and drought dry it into fuel.
Fire is only one expression of the same underlying stress.
England is having a water problem.
Seventy-one percent of the country’s land area is now officially in drought. Rainfall for August through August 20 was just 17 percent of the long-term average. Seven major reservoirs were at exceptionally low levels. Approximately 29 million people were living under temporary water-use restrictions.
Farmers are reporting agricultural boreholes drying up. Farm reservoirs are critically low or empty. More than 1,500 abstraction restrictions are in force. Crop yields are poor. Grass growth is down, threatening winter feed supplies for livestock. Root crops are becoming difficult to harvest because the ground is so hard.
There is something called a “flash drought,” which sounds like the sort of aggressively marketed drought Silicon Valley would invent after deciding ordinary drought wasn’t selling.
It means exactly what it sounds like: drought conditions intensifying unusually quickly because very low rainfall coincides with high heat and evaporation.
England is only one piece of the European water story.
Half of the European Union and United Kingdom was under some level of drought by late July. Europe’s four major rivers, the Loire, Po, Rhine and Danube, reached record-low levels in August. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre says water resources, agriculture, energy, river transport, tourism and ecosystems are all being squeezed simultaneously.
“Simultaneously” is doing an enormous amount of work. A river simultaneously supplies drinking water, irrigation, freight, industry, power generation and habitat. We divide those functions into separate sectors because that is how bureaucracies and newspapers work; the river does not recognize the categories. When its flow drops far enough, the supposedly separate systems begin failing together.
Across the Danube basin this summer, low water has constrained navigation, agriculture, hydroelectric production and nuclear generation. This is where the abstraction becomes almost comically physical: as the Danube fell, Romanian authorities dredged the river and even sank rock-filled barges to redirect more water toward the cooling intake at the Cernavodă nuclear plant. The improvisation bought time, but falling water levels ultimately forced reactor shutdowns.
Nothing in the machinery had to break for the system to fail. A nuclear reactor can be fully functional and still stop producing power because its cooling-water source has fallen outside its operating range; a hydroelectric turbine can sit idle for lack of flow, a cargo vessel can lose capacity because the channel is too shallow, and a productive farm can fail for lack of water.
Climate change does not have to destroy infrastructure to make it unusable. It only has to push the physical conditions that infrastructure depends on beyond the assumptions built into its design.
And there, I think, we return to Hemingway. Rainfall declines, soils dry, reservoirs fall, rivers grow shallower and vegetation loses moisture while power plants, barges, taps and crops keep functioning. The “suddenly” is often just the moment when those accumulated stresses finally push a system past its margin.
That is the part of the climate discussion we routinely miss. Collapse is rarely a single event arriving from nowhere; more often it is the end of a long erosion of resilience that remained mostly invisible while the system still appeared to work.
Systems that were once comfortably inside their operating envelopes move closer to the edge. They still work, so we congratulate ourselves. Then a drought, fire, storm, heatwave or equipment failure arrives and discovers that the cushion has already been spent.
A lot of resilience looks like waste right up until the minute you need it.
So after all of that, here is the part where I decline to tell you that civilization is doomed and recommend drinking heavily before breakfast. We actually know quite a lot about how to stop making the underlying problem worse, and something extraordinary has been happening while political arguments over renewable energy continue as though solar panels remain an exotic technology personally invented last Thursday by Greta Thunberg.
The world installed a record 664 gigawatts of solar power in 2025, pushing global capacity past three terawatts and supplying roughly 9 percent of global electricity demand, about three times its share five years ago. A technology that was prohibitively expensive a generation ago is now one of the cheapest forms of new electricity generation available across much of the world.
Which means the problem has changed. For decades the renewable-energy question was whether we could make enough inexpensive clean electricity. Increasingly, the answer is yes. The bottlenecks are transmission, storage, interconnection, planning, grid flexibility and market rules designed for twentieth-century power stations rather than millions of distributed generators.
The Just Have a Think discussion of SolarPower Europe’s latest report gets this exactly right: the next stage of the energy transition is increasingly about integration rather than generation. Electricity systems built around large centralized fossil-fuel plants were not designed for millions of rooftops producing power simultaneously at noon. Solar can succeed so rapidly that the grid itself becomes the constraint, which is such a perfect ending to this particular story that I almost resent it. Once again, the shiny object receives the attention. The connective tissue decides whether the shiny object works. Transmission lines, substations and battery-storage permitting are not sexy, and flexible electricity pricing has never once caused anyone to throw their underwear onto a stage. But civilization is mostly composed of boring things that function.
We know how to generate low-carbon electricity, build transmission and store it in batteries. We also know how to electrify transport and heating, design cities that hold onto more water and absorb less heat, and restore the wetlands, watersheds and forests that used to do some of that work for free. Humanity possesses sufficient cleverness, but can deploy it before physics completes the peer review?
Naturally, this brings us to ticks.
After an entire morning devoted to humanity discovering that natural systems have operating rules whether we approve of them or not, it seems only appropriate that Martha’s Vineyard is experiencing a remarkable increase in Alpha-Gal Syndrome.
Alpha-Gal is a bizarre condition in which a bite from certain ticks can cause an allergy to a sugar molecule found in most mammalian meat and some mammal-derived products. Suddenly beef, pork, lamb, and sometimes dairy products can cause serious allergic reactions.
On Martha’s Vineyard, hospital testing went from nine alpha-gal tests in 2020, two of them positive, to 1,689 tests in 2025, with 742 positive results. Massachusetts made Alpha-Gal Syndrome a reportable condition effective April 1.
Lone star ticks have been expanding and re-establishing populations farther north for a mixture of reasons involving deer, land use and habitat. Warming conditions may make northern environments friendlier to them, although I would not blame climate change alone for their spread.
Still, there is something almost offensively elegant about the ecological joke: we raise enormous numbers of cattle, cattle emit methane, methane contributes significantly to planetary heating, a warming climate may help make more northern territory hospitable to a tick, the tick bites us, and our immune system announces that perhaps we shall not be eating the cow after all.
Nature does not, alas, have a Department of Ironic Retribution. But if she did, Alpha-Gal Syndrome would be difficult to improve upon.

My understanding of Texan electoral districts and numbers who voted Democrats does have a wide knowledge gap. Wondering if the suspended voters are in areas which voted blue, or are identified/registered Dem voters.
Moreover, can Australia suspend voters if they’re identified as One Nation voters? Asking for a friend.

I was doing a deep dive on this with this US government agency report. I can’t find it now in the link but it’s not unusual for millions, especially in a state as populated as Texas to fall off the voter list because they’ve moved etc. Most people do end up voting.

Apart from the announcement, there seemed to be rather a lot of “not very much is known” going on. No-one seems to know if Iran is really mining the Strait or just using the uncertainty as a weapon. I didn’t hear if any ships have actually struck mines. I can’t find much about this. Have any of you lot seen this announcement about the magnificent abilities of the US armed forces?
