The scaled-down edition of the Commonwealth Games is underway in Glasgow.
Pretty basic opening ceremony. No athletes’ village. Only 10 sports:
Athletics
Gymnastics
3×3 basketball
Bowls
Cycling
Boxing
Judo
Netball
Swimming
Weightlifting
Whereas the Olympics has a separate Paralympics tournament, the Cwealth Games incorporate para sports. Six of the sports above have para events.
All members of the Commonwealth have teams at these Games. Gabon and Togo, who joined the Commonwealth in 2022, field teams for the first time.
I’ll be having a look at the lawn bowls, a nice quiet sport.

How is lawn bowls scored?
Gemma Ferguson profile image
By Gemma Ferguson
As we know, the aim of the game is to get your bowls as close to the jack as possible.
If you’ve got two closer to that target than your opponent by the time the round finishes, that’s two points in the bag!
Each set contains a number of ends, etc.

AI Overview
In lawn bowls, sets play means a match is split into shorter segments called sets (similar to tennis) rather than playing one long continuous total of ends.
How Sets Work
Structure: A match is usually played over two sets, with each set consisting of a fixed number of ends (for example, 6, 7, or 9 ends per set).Scoring a Set: The player or team with the most points/shots at the final end of that specific set wins the set.Tied Sets: If both sides score the same number of points in a set, that set is typically tied or shared.

Australia has topped the medal table at the Commonwealth Games on 14 occasions.
The exceptions are the following:
1930 Hamilton (Australia #5)
1934 London ( Australia #3)
1954 Vancouver (Australia was #2)
1958 Cardiff (Australia was #2)
1966 Kingston (Australia was #2)
1978 Edmonton (Australia was #3)
1986 Edinburgh (Australia was #3)
2014 Glasgow (Australia was #2)
(In 1982 Brisbane, England won the most medals but Australia won the most gold. Same was true in 1970 Edinburgh. )

It’s been a while since either Canada or NZ hosted.
Canada hosted 5 times from 1930 to 1994, and NZ three times from 1950 to 1990. New Zealand is preparing a bid to host in 2034.
One prominent sporting nation that’s never hosted is South Africa. Durban made a successful bid to host the 2022 games but failed to meet financial agreements and hence lost the rights: the Games were instead held in Birmingham. Hence, twice in a row the Games were given to a southern colony only for them to fail, leaving the UK to put something together. The Ahmedabad 2030 Games appear to be on more solid footing.

Melbourne’s withdrawal from hosting left the committee with limited options. Glasgow agreed to take it on, but their conditions were: 10 sports only, we aren’t building any new facilities, and we are not putting any govt money in, take it or leave it.

It was way too ambitious to hist the event in regional centres. If they had made Melbourne the main host city with a few events here and there in regional Vic they would hardly have needed to build anything.

William T. Britton is the only representative of Ireland to win a Commonwealth Games* medal. This was his silver for the hammer throw in 1930.
Ireland took part in both the 1930 and 1934 Games. Constitutional changes in 1937 reduced the connection between Ireland and the Crown. They could have taken part in 1938 but did not. There were no Games in 1942 or 1946 because of WW2 and its aftermath, and in 1947 Ireland severed any remaining connection to the Commonwealth.
*Then known as the British Empire Games.

So, no-one had a spare room, not even a pool room, or a local sports club? Maybe with a few hotels nearby that would have really liked the income?
Sounds dodgy to me.
But to be fair, being an Australian, we can’t complain, since there wasn’t one available in the entire state of Victoria.

One thing I still don’t understand about Victoria’s planned games was that it was somehow better to renege entirely rather than simply say a regional games would be too expensive so it would be a more traditional games with most of the action in Melbourne. Beyond my ken. It’s not as though regional Victoria would suffer from doing without.

It’s all the other facilities. The TV broadcast infrastructure, the changerooms for large numbers of competitors, the crowd requirements for seating, ticketing, food/beverages, toilets, transport access and parking and all the rest of it. They had a rule of no public funding to build new faculties. Probably they had a venue that could do table tennis, but there were other sports competing for venues available. Possibly they could have had it, but then some other sport would have been dropped – and you would be here saying the same thing about the other sport that missed out.

Melbourne had the games as recently as 2006. So this regional Victoria bid was based on it being “not Melbourne” as the key selling point, otherwise they probably would not have got it. What you said would be the logical alternative to you and me, but if the whole premise of awarding the bid was based on the “not Melbourne” principal then the organisers might have been reluctant to allow any change. I am sure they were asked (privately) and the refusal to dilute the principle lead to pulling the pin entirely.

Gary next door has a pong ping table, a few bevvies in the fridge, a webcam, and there’s a few places sorta nearby for parking. The guys can piss on the lawn as usual, and the ladies, er… there’s a few bushes down the road under the broken street light.
Pissed ping pong via webcam at Gary’s place would be a winner. No taxpayer funds required.
But…
Surely the bastards wouldn’t take go-kart racing out of the Commonwealth games?
