occasionally (say twice a day) two of my daughters chooks try to go forward and go sideways instead.
this has her worried as there are two unaffected chooks in the same pen.
she has recently got rid any ticks that were on them and has wormed them with garlic in the water.

she suspects – other worms, poisoning from morning glory.
anyone know the symptoms?

I’ve been doing some googling. There are a few possibilities but you could try worming and feeding extra protein. Have they just had a heavey moult?

thank you.
they are getting ‘red hen’ luxury food (everything including sunflowers dipped in molasses).
they are off to the bird expert today -so i hope he can think of something.

bird expert said it was a tick – he had a name for it – atypical tick? asymmetrical tick?
- nup – i can’t recall the name and my daughter’s eyesight can’t spot the tick.
so the saga goes on.

How long can it go on? I think I’d have it bumped off…

i’m not sure what you mean – but my daughter treats her chooks as pets – so she is even thinking of taking them to a vet .

I can understand that. And with all those feathers it would be near on impossible to find a tick on a chicken.

My girl was doing it as she was stretching her wings in the sun and would suddenly stagger to one side but only a few steps and then squat down.
I guess if the chooks are still eating ok…hopefully they are ok. I usually find when they don’t eat something is not good.

A deficiency of some sort after a heavey moult was one of the causes I read. They said to feed them some tinned cat or dog food.

Oh there ya go…I have a friend that said cat biscuits are worthwhile during a moult…and they love em

It may have done the damage and dropped off… especially if it was full…

contagion of the other chooks is a worry. the rooster has extremely glossy feathers and lives with them – so ???
they have been fed cat food and – wait for it – sesame seeds as a rich calcium replacement food.

lol Sesame seeds, eh?

Wonder if a boiled soup bone every now and then would be of assistance? They’re quite cheap and you can find them with the fresh dog bones at WW…

thankfully the chooks are getting over their staggers as their feathers grow back.
one of the hens was effectionally know as ‘vulture bird’ because of its uncovered skin areas but now its diet has improved and its new plumage is sprouting all over it is known as .. ‘porcupine’.

thanks to those who knew – because knowing when to do nothing is important.
