Hello people….I’ve not been here for a looong time, but my name was still recognized…..

So, does anyone know of a good online key guide for me to identify old roses in the garden? I have a number of books, including the big fat Roses one with the CD…..but none of the computers can read the CD any more. It was great, as it let you put in rose type, colour, smell level and number of petals (or however much of that you knew) and would give some suggestions to work on.

Is there a website somewhere that will do this?

I don’t know of any websites like that, buffy, but hopefully some of the others will stop by soon and they might have some ideas :)

I actually miss being able to use the CD. Even though I didn’t use it a lot. It cut short the flipping through the whole book stuff.

There are ladies on TheE’s forum who can tell one yellow rose from the next…encyclopaedic when it comes to roses, they are…would you like me to ask TheE to come over here and work out something with you?

Thank you Dinetta. It’s really annoying that the disk is no longer readable.

From TheE’s forum, TheE has put these up:

“Re: Buffy needs Roses ID key CD

Post by The Estate Today at 6:37 am
http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/index.php

or this rose forum ?

http://www.rosetalkaustralia.com/forum “

Leave the quote marks out, of course… :P

Thanks for your help. I’ve tried the ABC TechTalk people and we still haven’t got a way to make it work. None of the websites are really as good as the CD-ROM was. It’s such a shame.

Not all the roses folk have signed in to TheE’s forum yet and they may be a couple of weeks…

What happened to the CD_ROM? Did it lose its’ magnetism or something?

I think the problem is that the CD is no longer compatible with modern computers. That’s the impression I got.

(and they don’t work magnetically, they use laser technology.)

Well I did read that the older ones just lose “it”, whatever “it” may be, and over time they become unreadable…

What are the actual system requirements for this disc from the manufacturers?

Buffy, if you get back to check this, I had a couple more responses today…will post just in case:

Re: your CD might be deteriorated over time…..if you take it to a computer geek who does restoring……they can make you a new CD and tell them to do a slow burn for you”

and from Fran:

“The local rose society might be able to help although members there would most probably be growing HTs so it helps if you know what class. If it’s a heritage rose then it might pay to apply to those growing and/or selling them. Close up photos of canes and foliage, thorns if any, as well as bloom and description of growing habit might jog memories of those on forums. I have identified a few roses just by looking through all the rose encyclopedias and visiting gardens. Saw one in a garden in NZ that no one could identify for me and was just so excited that I’d found it. “

Thanks people. Seems from the TechTalk people that it’s probably not the disc but that it needs an old system to read it. I haven’t yet got around to talking to the local geek to see if he might have some ideas.
