whoops! Hit the enter button!
I’ve been gardening this morning and noticed my lemon verbenas still have leaves on them. This seems rather late. Pretty much all the other deciduous things are close to bare. I know the lemon verbena is a bit of a b in that it is always last to releaf in the Spring, and I always think I’ve lost it.
I’m in South West Vic. Anyone else still go leaves?

I’m no help Buffy, don’t have one in my garden…
I have some cuttings in pots that would have rooted by now and they still have leaves on them, if a little sad looking.

still leaves north of adelaide buffy.
like you i’ve been looking at it & thinking its late and very untidy – but i’ve plenty of other pruning to do so i’m not doing anything to it yet.
Thanks everyone. I have two plants. I’ve always tried to have Lemon Verbena as it was a plant grown by my great aunts and their parents (my great grandparents). It’s a smell of my childhood. I recall reading somewhere that some plants simply don’t take from cuttings, and I’ve never really worked out when to take cuttings, but the ‘parent’ plant I have now does take. I just stick sticks in the ground whenever I prune and hope something happens! Sometimes it does.
i pruned my lemon verbena wrong – again – but it is reshooting.
it seems that pruning it back very harshly is the only way…..but i’m open to suggestions.
can’t help you as I only have cuttings barely surviving in little pots. have noticed some new leaves though so I really should pot them up or find somewhere in the garden to plant them. info on the interweb seems a bit vague.

not to worry – i know buffy pruned hers same time as me.
i was looking for an update on her pruning results.
you will have trouble with cuttings i think – but be brave – the established plants are just shooting now.
if you succed the rest of us will want to know.
Actually, I haven’t pruned yet…..the last of the leaves are just falling now! So it will be done this week. No signs of new leaves shooting yet. But the Lemon Verbena always looks like it has finally carked it.
I read somewhere once (do idea where, now) that some plants will ‘take’ as cuttings and some won’t. This has been my (limited) experience too. The plant I have here I bought. And have successfully struck cuttings from it. The one I had at our previous house, I could never get bits to strike. I can’t, however, remember which is the best time of year or whether to use softwood or old wood…..so I usually stick lots of bits of all sorts in during the frantic growing part of it’s year.
With your cuttings, don’t despair. Leave the sorry looking sticks until at least mid Summer before you decide they have died. They can leaf up very, very, disappointingly late!

i pruned mine in late july – no frosts here.
therefore i should think i will stick in cuttings about july – and leave them in pots until december to see if they sprout.
but i have never succeeded in growing cuttings and i’ve tried..
these are the upside fig cuttings i removed from sand after 3 months and then chopped into 300mm lengths and potted.

these were struck last Spring, so new leaf growth is a positive sign that they are still alive.

Any plant may be grown from a single bud if the required conditions are replicated
well that’s them potted up :)
Well, I finally pruned this morning. The new leaves are just starting now. I’ve taken a couple of pieces that look possibles for cuttings and I’ll stick them in the ground and see what happens.

I have had new leaves on mine for a while now. Thinking it is time to put them in the ground.

now you’re asking! I think they were about pencil thickness.

ok – i will try several. ….. and well done.
i have just stuck 12 cuttings in pots – rooting powder, seaweed and epsom salts used to maximise the chances of success.
