good – thanks dinetta.
he’s getting rain and cold temps late into the dry – so his lens will have plenty of unusual stuff to focus on – i hope.

I’ve got a lovely little film camera that I never use any more. Bought it when digital didn’t have the quality of film but I have a digital that was my dad’s now that I am happy with and of course if much more convenient. Wonder if I would get anything for it on ebay?

Kodak shut down the Kodachrome factory, there will never be another roll of it made. I had a chat with my old mate CSIRO photographer and camera store owner. He told me that (and this was before I bought a digital camera), “film will soon be unavailable to anybody apart from stuff like X-Rays”.

I’ve hear that there has been a digital insert created to fit into the backs of film cameras but I was lucky enough to get a model that still could use the old lenses I already had..

THere’s a few disadvantages o living on the open plains..
relentless winds
dust storms
extremes of heat and cold
Etremely desolate in most parts..

and just such a long featureles drive to anywhere.

I can recall Henry Lawson barfing about an endless strech of blue grey nothing, travelling on the mail train from Broken Hill towards civilization.

The roads are so bl**dy straight!!! Quite apart from the featurelessness … I don’t think I would mind the climate or desolation… 2 days in BrisVegas and I’m looking for a brick wall to bang my head on…

:) Horseriding, I don’t know why I never giot into it.
I was always around horses, just never became a rider. Though yes I have ridden horses in the bush and it is a wonderful experience.
On a similar note I have ventured forth and ridden the 600 odd kilometres between me and Berri in SA and that is exactly the long flat featureless stuff for most of the way but had all sorts of interesting experiences along the way, one was a kangaroo pacing along beside us for kilometres.

OK..

but it still looks like bulldozers have been mining something like boulder opal so Winton might be correct.. dinosaurs and all that. Wish he’d put up a decent photo that could be enlarged without pixelation.

Nup…not at all

I have two profiles: one for family only and one for everybody else…it’s just a general way of keeping up with whoever’s on there…however PM has been also posting his “365 day project” photos on his fb…

I could live without it but at this stage it’s interesting for me when my offspring put their photos up…

You can configure it to blue blazes so sticky beaks can’t go through your photo album…and you can limit who reads your fb so all they can see is your “profile picture” and your “profile name”…

I’ve told Porkies about my birthdate and have not volunteered any info about my schooling, where I live, or other general information.

but it still looks like bulldozers have been mining something like boulder opal so Winton might be correct.. dinosaurs and all that. Wish he’d put up a decent photo that could be enlarged without pixelation.

Mine tinkit that the bulldozing is in the Boulia pic?

Must admit that I’ve swiped this info off PM’s facebook page…

Am I missing much by not doing facebook?

I must be too because I’m not a facebooker either.

There was “Spuds Roadhouse” at the road junction off to Woomera at Pimba?

Bookaloo is halfway between Augusta and Woomera eh? I can’t recall a roadhouse there, and I drove through there a lot in the early 90s…

That rings a bell. The Service Station where I saw the bits of Rocket was at a place called Jervois on the Plenty Highway.

Itirkawara again.

Well he’s not gorgeous but he’s certainly different. I found Chambers Pillar and read the mythology of Itirkawara but I’m no wiser about the name of the lizard. Was he winking at you in that photo?

nah, the flash shows up the colouring on the inside of his eye… kinda like red-eye in us ‘umans.

I thought that might be the case. Either that or he was blind in one eye.

isn’t that red desert sand amazing, and those thorny devils look like bits of dead twigs! beautiful!

I noticed that the Australian entry in the Chelsea Flower Show (last night on Gardening Aus) used a lot of that red dirt in their winning display.

They are very docile if you do pick them up.
They just sit there pretending you can’t see them.

I was brought up in a tent, or so it seems sometimes. My parents were dedicated bushwalkers and all our holidays were spent camping. It didn’t matter the weather, sunshine, rain, wind or hail, summer or winter, we were out there enjoying nature. Even if for me the enjoyment was somewhat forced. I did not enjoy the sunburn, the sore shoulders from carrying packs, the cold nights without sleep on hard ground, although I did learn an appreciation of the Australian bush. One funny thing was when we were at home and needed something in the middle of the night it was “Mum!” But when camping and it was a wet windy night and rain was coming in under the edges of the tents (no sealed floors then, just a groundsheet) and a channel needed digging, it was “DAD!!!”

we never went camping when we were kids – but either hired a house/shack or slept in a caravan.
a bushie mate and his german wife taught us camping. well – he taught us camping – she taught us the first rule of survival when camping – ….always take cake with you, that way you’ll never starve.

I wondered what was unusual about PM’s post…is he wet from rain (not the right time of the year for rain out there, surely?) or is he wet from dew?

nice shot of the rock.

:) opal caves are very interesting places to sleep. Particularly the ones that drop bits off the roof and just miss my head. Woke up to a thud/clang and wondered what could make that noise. Went to get out of bed and that was it. Stood on a rock the size of a shovel head that had banged on the fold up bed leg. Missed my head by about six inches.

No, I mean, it looks like they’ve pulled the scrub and there’s a bit of regrowth, this is not the side of the road but the panorama in general…

On a different note, the road looks in very good nick…

Sticks out a bit, doesn’t it?

Great composition (the photo) it looks like to me…hard to believe that Uluru has so many different colours…all tricks of the light available…

Nimitjara (hope I’ve spelt this correctly) was fond of painting his mountains in purplish tones…we Australians owe him a lot when it comes to visual representations of our landscape…I’ve never seen a painting of his of Uluru?

No doubt it’s me that’s strange. I remember going to Milford Sound in NZ many years ago. I found it very disappointing because I had seen it so many times in pictures and on post cards, the real thing didn’t do anything for me. I could go into minute detail but you get my drift.

driving at low orbit. When I get in the car, I have the knack of getting some serious kilometres underway. Thursday was the biggest day with 900kms done, but done in daylight hours and finished by 4pm. Its all about focus.

agree. Long distance driving is a condition, and it requires practise and regular training. When I came back from PNG, I was exhausted just driving 200kms in a day.

LOL!

Actually speaking, it looks rahter volcanic-y, there’s ripples in the middle and one half-expects an upwelling and the water to pour over the lip..

Even in this “still” shot there appears to be movement…

Kitchen was outside, separate building just in case it caught fire. You only burn down one room.

drove past Carnarvon, was determined to get home. Been a long 3 weeks. But have made it. Roma to Townsville in 10 hours was a fair hoike. I think next time, I will head south first… one tends to feel that they have more disposable time at the start of a trip like this, and one feels a need to get home at the end. So we flew home as quick as the road rules would allow.

We had a great time, saw some wonderful scenery and met some wonderful people. I feel better for the journey. Australia is a pretty cool place to be. Will download more photos and may even blog the journey on my existing blog.

So glad to be warm again.

Cheers and Beers,
pm.

Both would have cost you…a full tank at Roma would get you easily to Emerald….then another full tank to Townsville…the Belyando is a very pleasant spot to fill the ‘uman tank…where did you “fill” at Rolleston?

difference in price of fuel at Roma, Emerald, Rolleston and Belyando was at most 3cents per litre. And 65cents cheaper then I paid for fuel at Jervois. So I didn’t care too much.

kinda. In the processing, I was thinking more of making the image look more dramatic. Originally it was kinda warm and nice, so I just upped the starkness value a little.
