Oh, brag time…WE have got a flood…the Fairbairn Dam has gone over…and I mean OVER…from about 40 % to overflowing in about 2 days I think, and this is a BIG body of water (did I tell you Lake Maraboon is B I G?)???

You would not believe the crowd, I said to Mr D “I never thought that the dam overflowing would be a community event here”

Some people had got there early with their eskies…we arrived just as the first trickle spilled over the spillway…I still get goosebumps down my spine when I remember this…after all these years…(about 18)…Mr D remembers taking eldest daughter to watch that one, the eels were sick of it by this time and they were falling down the spillway with the water…He says it was 12 months before he could get her back in the water out there…Oh this is just tremendous…a friend sent me about 30 photos that she took, she was so excited…

everybody was lined up and taking photos as the water spilled over the “lip” at the bottom of the spillway (after all the baffles, etc)…hundreds of cars, a traffic jam on the spillway…the coppers were attending the funeral of a much-revered retired local sergeant (may he rest in peace) but there was no road rage …they came out after and were directing the traffic…all these Mexicans getting excited about a dam overflowing, I’ll bet they never gave a thought about where water comes from in their previous home state….Mr D and I have been driving around looking at the floods as they go up and down…this is what country people do to make memories…

There is a truck stuck on the Theresa Creek overflow, he ignored the barriers…the RACQ had a heli out there this AM …

it has been wonderful rain for over a week, my no-dig vege bed has finally got a full moisture profile… Sonny Jim has planted corn in the “3 sisters” quadrant, we also planted a couple of rows of tomato seeds…The beans go in next, I think the corn might need a day of sunshine and then the beans can go in (blue lake…bean seeds are hard to find here, people mostly buy punnets)…

I splashed out and bought a pH kit, will have to check it out again…

The burrowing frogs are UP!!!!!, tis a wonderful sight to see and to my mind, indicates a full soil moisture profile…

MrD has found a graph that shows the level of water over the spillway…I never knew such information was “out there”, on the WWW…he’s hardly computer literate, either…it’s 0.68 metre over…

We’re off to buy some RID shortly, for when the sun comes out…

Guess there’ll be all sorts of Thanksgiving hymns in the churches tomorrow…

Thanks to Lucky for letting me know about this new Forum…

Brilliant news Dinetta. I take it yours and everyone elses spirits are lifted by so much water.

I heard on the news tonight that there are more people in Q’ld recieving flood relief than there are people recieving drought relief ATM. LOL.

Funny thing about country people isn’t it? When we were living in Charleville, any time a siren was heard everyone jumped in their cars and off we’d all go following the fire truck or the police/ambulance to whatever the excitement was about. Same happens when a dam goes over as well I see.

Nice to see your name up in lights again too.

but there was no road rage
=======================

Correction… I was given to understand today that people were fighting over the “parking spots” (there are no designated carparks on the spillway or dam wall)…the coppers went to sort it out…

She’s two metres up and rising, they expect it to peak early tomorrow…the news is bulls**t…25% of the town does not need to evacuate… I mean, the golf course isn’t full yet…just a couple of temporary water hazards and that is it…I can’t believe Anna Bligh…either that or the news media is twisting what she says…shame on them…

The sun is out, so the corn should shoot out of the ground and then we plant the beans…my pumpkin has one pumpkin on it after all…I’m starting to think it is related to the triffid variety that Lucky had knocking on her kitchen window a few years ago…

Yes Pomolo, it’s amazing how quickly the drought has turned to floods during this “rain event” (don’t you love the modern lingo?)…we met my sister and her husband by chance today …they are on their way to New Zealand…first holiday since BC (before children, the eldest would easily be 30 y o) I think…they bolted as soon as the creeks went down, have been stuck for about 5 days…they received 20 inches (don’t know the litre-age of that) and another place received 24 inches…lovely soaking stuff…

Can I plant shallots in between the tomato rows? I was planning to plant basil and parsley as well (between the rows)…

Thanks for the welcome…nice “clean” LHS frame as well…

BBL

Sorry, I should have added that Emerald is in the Fitzroy Basin (Fitzroy river system)…this water from the Fairbairn Dam/Lake Maraboon will eventually flow into the Fitzroy River, which is Rockhampton’s river…we’re on the eastern side of the Great Divide, and Charleville is on the western side, so our water flows east to the Pacific Ocean and the Warrego (Charleville’s river) flows west into Lake Eyre (if there is enough water)…and Charleville is Pomolo’s old stamping ground…

Hi Pomolo, did you see the really interesting thing they did for a levee bank (or at least a flood controller)?

They used black plastic weedmat and those forklift pallets…I thought that was in the pics but then I thought, nah, they’ve got the wrong photos..

well we do have a disaster here…bad bad bad…there’s still a couple of days water to come down from even further up the catchment, but hopefully it will slack off tonight… 60 homes inundated…not even the old timers can remember it this high…we are unaffected but I had to catch the shuttle train with the kids as we need to fly from Rockhampton to Brisbane tomorrow…daughter drove from Rockhampton to pick us up…they were freighting over milk and an aged person…she went on the flat car with the milk and our luggage, they strapped her gurney to the floor and stood over her with a big brolly…the aged persons are being put up at the cotton gin…every hour they freighted over one more aged person…the water was that close to overflowing the railway bridge…scarey… I could cry for the people whose houses have been inundated, however most of them had the furniture moved out Sunday and yesterday…

I see where the Charleville flood had flood experts from New Zealand! to assist…amazing…
