OK, pepe started this… well his barber did by saying that his 4 essential herbs were parsley – sage – rosemary – and thyme.
Pepe said Parsley – Thyme – Oregano – and Ginger.
Well the four herbs that I cannot do without would be:
Basil – Parsley – Coriander – Sage.
Apart from the rooty spice of Pepe’s Ginger, what four leafy herbs do you have to have in your garden?

i don’t care if it is a rooty spice -
but since we’re being fussy i will substitute
garlic – or is that too tubular? LOL.
just luv ginger at present.
i went to a sixtieth birthday party in a pub that served home brewed alcoholic ginger ale – it’s a spice from above i tell ya !!

I use a lot of different herbs but the two most commonly used are oregano and thyme/s I use several thymes. Basil features big in the wifes cooking so I never bothr to use it in mine. I do now have a sage plant though haven’t grown it for years.. Wife may occasionally use it but I don’t use it much. Rosemary low growing type forms a border in my front garden which is mainly native. I grow enough parsley to supply all the restaurants in my city. Yarrow takes pride of place as does calendula and chamomile as useful medicinal herbs that flower beautifully. Borage is another I allow to be a bit of a weed. I’d use more herbs if I did more cooking but I tend to eat a lot of stuff straight iout of the garden .. raw.
By the way, the wife bought a bunch of basil for a recipe so I snipped the bottom part of the bunch where I managed to get at least one node on each stem.
Poked them into the garden today in the rain. Most of them will be producing basil before any seed comes up.

I could limit herbs to three main ones but the fourth would have to be a random one. I do use mints if I have enough water to keep them alive but I’d probably use peppermint more than most.

Yep a real little go-er, tough as to grow, cane toads hate it (related to vicks vaporub plant), in fact it was the only herb that many folk, in my house-water-only days, could grow successfully…
I use herbs fairly frequently…I find MOAH great in rissoles and as Pomolo says, it’s unbeatable as a standby…
My favourite herbs, possibly indicative of the cooking I like to do and this is influenced by the area I live in: Basil, lemon thyme, flat leaf parsley, and sage. I would have put coriander in place of sage but it’s a fussy grower up here…except in winter and this year I couldn’t be bothered…

Let me send you some Pepe. Then it’s no loss if it fails.
I f you are sending it to Adelaide then there should be no reason not to try it here. ;)
Gotcha RB. You are officially on the “to post” list.
:)
So now to .. go from there. How are you sending it? as cuttings in a plastic bag? If so then we’ll need to get mailing addresses correct.

Pineapple?
animal mineral vegetable, or herb? Whatever it is I have a lovely one for tonights dessert.
It’s hard to imagine that a winter pineapple will be ‘nice.’
The FIL brought some over about 2 months ago…as they went “off”, they didn’t exude that sweet stench that’s peculiar to pineapple….

You can email me your addy. dmi86762 at bigpool dot net dot au. I will post ASAP. This plant won’t die even after a week out of the ground but I’ll make sure it travels in good conditions.

Tough call, but the four I use most are probably Bay, Oregano, Thai Basil, Lemon Thyme.
Kaffir lime and Curry leaf are up there too but not really herbs.
bay and kaffir lime are trees – don’t let PM read this or he’ll throw a fit.
interesting thread tho’ – i can see bubba is quite an asian in her cooking.
I’m past throwing a fit. This thread is well and truly hijacked.

Fairy nuff, but these, you could propagate them from one crushed leaf, especially with your talent for plants…

It won’ t even die after being tipped out of the pot for a couple of months, not in winter anyhow…

my whole point… it was all about sacrifice, and the ability to adapt. I was keen on seeing what 4 “traditional” herbs would be their version of the old “parsley sage rosemary and thyme”

I’ve sent heaps of plants in the mail and the best and easiest way is a cardboard tube. You can get long ones at the post office and I cut them down to the required length. Just cover the ends with masking tape and stick an envelope on to write the addy on. If it’s something a bit delicate stuff some newspaper in the end so it can’t move about too much.

Apparently has lots of names I never knew till this thread.
If anyone would like some of their own to grow I am more than willing to post on to you. I’m not sure how well it would grow down south but I will send some if you want to try it anyway.
Just request via this thread.
