even though they don’t grow a lot in Winter, it is good to plant them in Autumn rather than Spring as they are stronger plants as a result, according to our mate Pete.

the other Pete tip, for beans, peas, broad beans, silverbeet, spinach, garlic, and onions = apply dolomite before planting, if soil is not alkaline.

Broadbeans really are not suitable for this area. But that doesn’t stop the B shop having heaps of them and Spinach which is also not suitable, on sale for suckers.

Hi Lucky – only recently changed as with seedling supplier contracts. Ordered by persons remote from the area, I think!

Even stores with clothing sections are guilty of it!

Crikey I had to scroll back goodness know how many pages “By Topic” to find this thread.

Question…… my broad beans are doing very nicely thanks…just a couple of questions

1…. they are still going upwards, not so many flowers now, does this mean they are almost finished, even though they are still getting taller.? Or does this mean I need to do something to get them to flower again?

2…. How long do broad beans crop for?????

they die off when they finish – ie turn brown and dry. so yours will go on bearing for a while if they are still growing.
the flowering might be improved with potash altho’ its a bit late to bother. i would just keep watering and hope for more flower sets. they are a winter crop so save a few seed and plant again in march.

I don’t see why not! they can also be used to make falafals.

ms pepe and i have used them with pasta. pod them of course. you can fry (blanche/roast) them with garlic and herbs first – they are fairly tasteless on their own.
