Subject: Fig Trees

I have a steep slope Coastal Block on which I have two Fig Trees; soil poor limestone and watering from tanks.

Number one was given me in a pot. About 600 high and in stressed condition. It is now, after Two and a half

years, 1700 high and has shown no sign of fruit?

No 2 came from a reliable source. First year bore 23 delicious fruit this year 1. Can anyone help with this?

Could no1 be grafted with a proven bearer?

Thank you for any help you can give.

Yours Glenda Eichner.

Grafting figs is tricky due to the copious milky sap. it can be done but isn’t the easiest. The first fig probably is simply in need of a good season’s growing unless it came from a seed. Most figs are grown from cuttings and should fruit on this years growth(new season growth). Feed well and water well.

If you want to graft it you’ll need to make other cuts to bleed excess sap. This can be done at this time of year via chip bud.

On a steep sloping block, you should create a C shaped dam wall on the downside to both hold water you put there and catch avaiable runoff. Limestone soils don’t worry figs. Figs are hardy but do better if there is a good water supply. I’d suggest that the main reason it hasn’t fruited yet would be that it was in poor condition when planted. Once it gets growing well it should fruit well.
