A bright and breezy Saturday. Bright as in sunny and breezy as in windy. Could be worse. Temperature is cooler so it should be a good day.

Yep :) We have had a short burst of very slow, heavy rain. The sort that doesn’t wet much but makes a hot day feel infinitely better.

I’m flat out running that 15+ kg of clothes through the washing machine.. just trying to get it all dry, now, but I won’t be upset if the rain comes back :)

I’m just rushing myself, because I want to get them out of the house :) Falling over piles of clothes all over the place at the moment! & if I don’t get them dry today, it’ll be another week or so, according to the rain forecast.

Huh. Well now we have a Severe Thunderstorm warning:

http://www.ewn.com.au/alerts/2011-12-05-054900-23796-865/alert.aspx

Just hope it holds off until I have reached home. The suburb where I work is coastal so gets some pretty hairy storms, but where I live we seem to have a little pocket of calm.

Good to see rain near Gingin and Augusta – hopefully it will finally put those fires out!

So how do you compensate for the rainfall or lack of? Do you spend a lot of time hosing or sprinkling or use a lot of water crystals?

I almost consider it too cool. Too cool for ripening tomatoes. Beautiful weather otherwise.

36ºC here in Atherton today. It is always cooler up here and the coastal people come this way to escape the heat. GF said at home we hit 38ºC which is the highest temp we have seen in Mangolia.

Raining here. Rained all night actually. I so love waking to the sound of rain. It’s a bit cool and we’re not going to see any sun today that’s for sure. Back into the trackies I guess. I can handle it.

Hope the weather you’re getting is how you want it too.

I reckon I must have! I didn’t mean to. I know my rain guage was empty as I flushed it out this morning. It overflowed. Already started the clean up and replanting. Unblocked patio drain and ripped out hard to pull weeds, stomped on scores of snails and scooped them up for chookies on the shovel.
Picked up and re-tied flattened tomatoes and caps. I’m drenched. I can’t get to use the water in the pondy tub as we’ve had too much rain and it’s been overflowing regularly.
Time for an iced coffee.

despite the hard work put in by your storm clods Potter, the highest totals recorded in Victoria from 9am yesterday to 5am this morning was just short of 50mm. Mackay on the central Queensland coast has proven that no matter how wet you think you are, there is always somewhere else that gets wetter then you. The BOM raingauge out at Homebush, just west of Mackay has recorded 103mm for the same time period…

Not a cloud in the sky this morning. Suns is up high & hot already. We never actually got the storm (s) that moved past us last night. The sky was alive with electrical activity but I don’t think we got one drop of rain. Haven’t checked the guage yet.

Funny how you can have all that commotion going on and still not get any rain from it. I’d like to think that those that needed it got some anyway. The good side is that we missed all the severity that can go with it too.

Yes absolutely.. I remember living in Mackay and the rain being like a wall of water. Down south that sort of rain is rare and never lasts long, 10 minutes or so. We’re too low lying to cope with longer than that. This lot of moisture is very unusual.

Normally here.. all we need is water to turn a six inch nail into a crowbar, according to old man Macwilliam from Macwilliams wines

I love that saying. It’s a goodie.

Could be up for the first Cyclone for the season around Wednesday, but this one looks to travel down the coast. Might make some good surf for Surfers Paradise on Xmas Day.

The BOM says:

Thursday

Existing Cyclones in the Eastern Region:
Nil.

Potential Cyclones:
A low situated southeast of Papua New Guinea is moving in a south-southwesterly
direction and is expected to develop further over the next couple of days. The
low is expected to remain offshore and not affect the Queensland coast.

Likelihood of a tropical cyclone in the Eastern Region on:

Tuesday: Low
Wednesday:High
Thursday: High

NOTE: The likelihood is an estimate of the chance of each system being a
tropical cyclone in the Region for each day.
Very low: less than 5% Low: 5% – 20%,
Moderate: 20% – 50% High: Over 50%

The area of coverage for this outlook is the Coral Sea and northern Tasman Sea

The fact is it possibly will remain off the coast, may or may not produce the swell I mentioned…

When I worked on the rig (offshore) we had a 57 on an equipment gauge, sitting on a bench on a pile of rags.. And it was humid.

Poor welder was working, Boot, overalls, leather gauntlet gloves, cap, leather apron, full face welder mask – out in it. He could do 10 min at a time before going inside to cool down. His boots were filling up with sweat. I only had helmet, overall, boots and cotton gloves, but I was between vessels (separators) that were 60-70C. These vessels are like rounded off busses.

Hottest place in WA is usually Marble Bar. they have some amazing temp stats. One I remember was over 160 days in a row over 100F/37C.
Think of the electricity costs…

Earlier in the year I was offered a job fly-in-fly-out around Tom Price, not far from Marble Bar.
That’s on a 2/1 roster, I could earn as much in my current job if I did those hours..
And that’s 10min from home! And overtime is always available if I get greedy. I’m not.

I said to her she should never say that until she tried.

Still no sign of rain. For another week at least. So we’ll keep hosing to keep the desperate alive.

Nights are still cold by our standards. Days are hot but not over the top as you would expect at this time of the year. What on earth am I complaining about anyway? It could be normal and I would be a grease spot.

Friday

A southerly change is pushing up the NSW coast, triggering isolated showers. A trough is causing patchy rain over northern NSW and southern QLD. Another trough in the west is bringing scattered storms to WA and western SA. Mostly clear elsewhere across the southeast under a high.

We were very lucky today, a drop of rain and around 25…tomorrow should be the same without the rain, so gonna take the oppurtunity to cook a rather large lamb roast. Might not get the chance again for a while, I guess the heat will be back soon.

Hot here. Just back from the markets and it was unpleasant strolling around the stalls. Too much sun.

Tomorrow is going to be a test. 36c is predicted for our closest town and we are usually a couple of steps higher than them. Probably inside all day with the aircon at full blast. Haven’t used it since well before Christmas. Humidity is still around 40%. Far too dry for us.

Pomolo, hope your garden survives while you are away. I have gone away a couple of times before only to come back and find my garden half dead. It really puts off the idea of going away in hot weather, although sometimes there may be not much you could do about it even if you are home.

our broadcasters announce every morning a chance of showers during the wet. Sometimes they say a chance of showers and a possible afternoon thunderstorm.

I’ve noticed that all the weather sites tend to say 1-5 mm possibility, every day

that is quite normal for where i live :)

on days that we get a dew, yes. The CSIRO records the dew as precipitation.

ripped this off the weather forum but:

(1) Upper trough develops and surface trough deepens from tomorrow.
(2) monsoon trough begins moving south tomorrow
(3) The low level flow becomes more Easterly to North-Easterly and brings in bulk moisture into the upper/surface trough causing widespread rainfalls from late tomorrow onwards.
(4) Good rain over most of Queensland over the next week (50+mm)

It’s OK everyone, it’s been updated…

Tuesday Very hot. Mostly sunny. Min 21 Max 38
Wednesday Very hot. Sunny. Min 24 Max 39
Thursday Very hot. Mostly sunny. Min 26 Max 40
Friday Very hot. Sunny. Min 24 Max 39
Saturday Very hot. Sunny. Min 26 Max 41
Sunday Very hot. Sunny. Min 24 Max 39

Cue melodramatic sulking and temper tantrums :D

Although actually, my soil is holding up much better than I thought it would. It is quite dry (because I haven’t had the health/energy to do much to it for ages), but the nice soil around the trees actually isn’t hydrophobic yet, which was a pleasant surprise.

I will be hand watering with worm juice every evening this week, I think.

(1) Severe weather Warning issued over SE Queensland
(2) general falls of +100mm expected over the state
(3) Flooding is possible and even likely by Wednesday over parts of the SE Coast as an upper LOW develops further and an upper trough sharpens.
(4) The monsoon trough develops further an pushes southward between now and Wednesday.

Thanks Pom. It’s not too lovely over here that’s for sure. I called off my Mon arvo job to get my car air con regassed just to make the rest of this week possible… Today’s jobs were tolerable because I could rejuvenate somewhat between jobs thanks to the air con, and thankfully the third job of the day was fixing blocked retic – my favourite summer job, LOL!

Water, water everywhere. Gee it’s pretty wet now. We have done well because we’ve only had about 100mls all up. Lots of other places are floating away after a lot more rain than we have had. They are still saying that today will be the worst with 150 to 200mls going to happen.

We’ll be inside all day again. Maybe a jigsaw………………

We’re inside trying to avoid the dreadful heat. 41.4 and supposed to be even hotter tomorrow. With the Australia Day public holiday, D asked me to take Friday off so that we could have a four day weekend (D lives and works about 80km away so we only see each other on weekends), so I don’t have to work any more in this heat until next week!

There seems to be a heap of people doing the 4day weekend thing.

says she who enjoys a 7 day weekend each week.

I certainly do but a 4day w/e is more fun.

Cricket has got to be better than the tennis D is watching. There is a player (female) on at the moment with a serious case of enforced groaning as she hits the ball. I’d be so tempted to put a sock in it. lol.

No, they’re all doing it these days, it should be a fineable offense. It hides the sound of the ball being hit and disadvantages their opponent, so it is tactical cheating.

Guess what! It’s raining again. Reduced to storms now but they still hold lots of water to drop on us.

We have to go into town today. Blood tests are overdue. I’m not looking foreward to the trip though. There will be water over the roads and bridges out etc. There is minor flooding in town.

Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it. LOL.

I’m in the awkward position of never having seen a wicket taken this summer. Everytime I fall asleep or leave the room another wicket falls and I hear all this enthused shouting from afar.
Same thing happens with the Crows – they always kick goals when I’m out the room. This is very bad for my self esteem – I feel like they’ve had a bad season because I watched them too much.
But don’t worry about the Adelaide test – we’ll win because I’ll be watching the beautiful baseline screamers on channel seven.

A good reason to stay away from 7.

Three words I would NEVER have applied to cricket.
Long, drawn out periods of nothing with occasional bouts of action is more like it. :D

yeah i’m describing tennis :)

Yeah, sorry ‘bout that, realised it later on when I read another comment. RB had been extolling the virtues of cricket a few posts beforehand and I got confused, LOL!

Summer weather, summer sports. I didn’t actually extoll the virtues of cricket yet. I can if you want me to but suffice to say that cricket is the chess of sport and if you enjoy chess you will begin to contemplate what cricket is about.
As for the weather it is currently 24.0°C @ 2 am. They keep downgrading rain forecasts for my area but we did get about half a mm today and the next three days are forecast at:

10-20mm 90%
10-20mm 70%
10-20mm 60%

Though they were forecast at 20-40 mm yesterday, so I expect the forcasts to be further watered down each day.

But don’t worry about the Adelaide test – we’ll win because I’ll be watching the beautiful baseline screamers on channel seven.

hope you have mute button on. Look, I know what tennis is and it is a sport so ergo it is good, but the grunting gives me the screaming abdabs. Its a real turn off.

aha the truth at last ;)

“ I know what tennis is and … it is good”

out of context ya honour! I said that due to the fact that it was a sport, it was good. I do find it odd like Serena the other day served so many double faults. How can such high paid elite athletes make so many errors? I expect the standard to be higher. As sportspeople go, they do not deserve the money they make.

Well, they can try for a ‘safe’ serve, which will probably get smashed back at them, or they can try for an ace, which is incredibly tricky to achieve and means they risk a double fault. I once asked somebody else why they don’t just do a safe serve on the second attempt, and the answer was that according to the stats, most aces are achieved on that second shot.

yes, practice makes perfect. but I have to admit thta tennis was more intersting before they found the need to grunt. still it is infinitely more boring than cricket.
which is the only team sport that really interests me though I am also interested in basketball netball and soccer.

I think we have a sunny day here. There are clods but they aren’t grey and threatening. Good! Perhaps I can get a bit of spraying done. I’ve been waiting for long enough.

Update. No sprayng. The snakes have been waiting for a sunny day as well. Inside for the rest of the day.

It’s raining here in Adelaide. Pretty good drop too – altho’ i haven’t checked the guage.
Our rainwater tank ran dry yesterday so we had just turned over to mains water when this rain came. This morning I had my ear up against the tank listening to the sweet sound of seven downpipes pouring into the tank.

We have had another this afternoon. I’d say that they have suffered through at least 3 weeks of the rain and the continually overcast skies knowing they need the sun for warmth and movement. If a snake suffers I can’t conjure up a lot of sympathy. I know it’s the wrong way to look at it.

Not at all. The rain stopped last weekend although parts of Towntown got a cracking storm of Tuesday night. However day times have been 35ºC with blue skies, massive humidity and no rain. Bit rude really. This wet season is a bit of a fizzer.

We have 2 inches in the guage. 4 storms in total and one from each direction so the whole house got a wash. No damage and everything in the gardens looks lovely. I know Cooroy and Noosa had a bad time and there are more storms predicted for today. I bet other places copped a beating too but it’s Noosa that makes the headlines.

Temp will be bearable today but humidity will probably be high.

They were coming from all directions. The clouds were swirling and it was hard to tell which direction they were going to or coming from. I only knew because the verandah was wet on all three outer edges and the gardens against the house are all very wet.

A storm warning from this morning has been cancelled.

“24 hour rainfall totals of 100 to 150 mm are likely about the coast and nearby
ranges, with isolated rainfall totals in excess of 200mm possible.”

Our rivers and creeks are already bulging with dirty water that is flowing at a great of knotts from the rain we got a couple of days ago. I musn’t complain but I can see floods happening if we get what is predicted. Should make the weekend interesting anyway.

That 404 above is now deleted. Last night we had in excess of 160mm. The guage overflowed at that level so we have no way of knowing the exact total. Wild storms, teeming rain, lightning and thunder. We had it all at around 2am and I slept through the lot. Just as well too because I probably would have panicked. D was on patrol though. He is my hero.

Rivers all around are on the fast rise so we will be flood bound by lunch time. Not a problem because you are always prepared when you live in the country.

There are places that had it worse than us too. So I hope all is ok with them. I hope they are safe and dry as we are.

Today, bloody hot.
Air con on , lump of frozen mince will go out to the big chooks soon and small silkie chicks will come inside in their crate if they look stressed. They can watch me doing housework from the laundry. hehe.

Yes it’s pretty close to us. Poor old Cooroy had a bad storm through the week that tore roofs off and uprooted trees. They definately didn’t need last nights downpour.

We appear to have topped the state for rainfall today. 36 mm at the airport.. probably almost 10 mm less in my backyard. I’ll re-measure it witha torch before I go to bed.
