I have a few tomatoes growing in a large pot ( Wine Barrel ) that are slowly going yellow from the ground up.

The ones planted in other gardens are doing fine.

does any one have any suggestions ?

yellowing can be for a number of reasons, but first I would start with your feeding and watering regime. You have a number of plants in one pot there and tomatoes can be hungry plants. Potting mixes are notoriously poor on nutrient and even the better ones will run out quickly. In a pot I would recommend some slow release fertiliser and a regular liquid feed, weekly or fortnightly. If you can find something suited for tomatoes or fruiting vegetables that would be best. If you feel that you have been giving them plenty of fertiliser and water then you would need to look at the possibility of over fertilising/watering (can have the same symptoms of not enough so can be confusing) or diseases. Given that you have healthy ones in the ground though I would think that less likely unless you are using old potting mix. You might need to consider decreasing the number of plants in the pot as it might just be a matter of overcrowding which means they are competing with each other for nutrient and water. You won’t save those leaves that are already yellow, but hopefully we can help you get some new, healthy growth. Sometimes though it is easier and cheaper just to replace them although I see you already have some fruit forming so you might not want to do that. If you do decide to though do NOT reuse that potting mix, or even that pot again in case of soil borne disease.

From Burkes Back yard site re tomatoes:

Yellowing leaves? As plants grow, the lower leaves go yellow and die. That is normal, so simply snip of any yellow leaves. However, if many leaves go yellow or the yellowing is accompanied by unhealthy looking blotches and spots, or if the plant wilts despite regular watering, the plant has probably contracted a bacterial, fungal or virus disease. Spraying with a copper-based fungicide such as Kocide or Fungus Fighter may help in some cases but usually the plant is doomed and ought be pulled out and disposed of. Don’t grow tomatoes in that spot again for at least two years.

i’m with BG
too many plants and too little fertiliser.
they are spose to grow 1200mm apart.
….and you are spose to dig a trench (one fork deep two forks wide) and fill it with fertiliser 6 weeks prior to planting.

I had a walk around the garden yesterday. All of my tomatoes are yellowing this year….interestingly so is one of my acacia longifolias.
Haven’t had a real close look, but it’s been so cool and moist over the last few weeks I am assuming disease :(

I’d say so. Bugga. Been the same here cool and wet. Mine are hanging in there. This year though I planted them much further apart and staggered them for best air flow so they dry faster. It seems to be working ok, so far.

Must admit I am a bit unmotivated to even think about the garden because of my limitations at present, but I need to try. Having said that the ortho did warn me not to try too much too soon (as if that is going to happen, as anyone who knows me will attest)

:-) He said that once the pain starts to ease patients often try to do too much and do further damage. I don’t want that to happen so I now have an almost legit reason to be lazy!!!
