To watch the first day of the tour we were at the Templars turnoff yesterday. We arrived an hour early and the hot north wind and 50 degree temps (on the bitumen) meant the peloton was running 30 minutes behind schedule. Fortunately we found a shady willow, folded out our comfy seats, opened the pesto and downed cold drinks while we waited and the crowd grew.

Channel nine has taken over the broadcast of the tour and are not a patch on SBS. There were plenty of mean looking cameras and pleasant police at the road junction.

This is my best shot of the four man breakaway that was 10 minutes ahead of the peloton for most of the day. They were caught by the peloton just a few kilometres from the finish.

The peloton rounds the corner. These guys had a very hard day in the saddle with the bitumen being hot enough to feel through leather soles. It’s a corner in the middle of nowhere (population of Templars is about 10), but over a hundred people were there to cheer.

this is yesterdays TDU and there are more photos if you click this one and scroll.
the weather is superb and there are big mobs of people along the route.
yesterdays race had a shock finish with a breakaway of 44 riders picking up 7 minutes time advantage in the twenty kilometres between manglers hill and the finish line..

if it was anyone else i would think they were being facetious but the master can probably name all three faces and teams – so here’s another shot – i took 52 shots that day – at KOM hill/nosworthy roads, lyndoch and at 1 km from the finish in tanunda.

I can name the teams, but there are not too many individuals in a sport where they all wear the same clothes and head covering gear and big glasses. I know of a few faces but not many.

Half hidden in the white is B. Kadri of Ag2r la mondial (french)
In the orange is Ruben Perez of Euskattel Euskadi (Sp.)
…and the UniSA rider in red is J. McCarthy

you got two out of three.

I cannot see Kadri. Perez is in the Orange Jersey of Euskatel and McCarthy is hiding with the white sleeves but there is a guy in the red jersey of Katusha by the name of Gatis Smukulis
