Warming up here again. Can’t get over the fact summer is nearly finished. Though March can be a scorcher. eek!!

Thinking of cutting back some of the vegie garden and plant a few trees.

Apricot tree down in the back corner of the larger vegie garden. Orange tree in the square block just outside the back door in the lawn area.

With the old cubby house no removed completely. I was going to put the apricot tree there, but I have visions of the elf and I yelling at the chooks for getting up in the tree and eating the fruit.

Thinking of maybe a mandarin tree would be a better idea.

Thoughts on this would be fab thanks:)

fruit trees in the chook yard are a good idea as they clean up the spoiled fruit and pests around the tree. Might have to protect the good fruit from the feathered workers though.

Yes until the tree gets big enough it would be surrounded with wire.. This is why I thought a citrus tree, though an apricot tree was more popular choice. As it drops its leaves in the winter months.

A citrus is in the chooks run is perfect. They do have a peck at lower new leaves but soon realise they don’t like it. I used a few broken pieces of plastic lattice around the base and for half a meter out or they will dig up the fine surface feeder roots. I sat a rock on each piece.
I’ve been adding fruit trees where I had vege beds and gone more into growing fruits. But I’ve left 4 small vege beds in the sunniest spot for my favourites that I think I’ll be growing forever. I’m not getting any younger, indeed, I’m falling apart! lol.

I have a mango tree and a grapefruit in the chook yard and also planted a loquat. My girls don’t climb the trees. They love loquats and eat any that drop, not the mango or the grapefruit though. I’m not surprised about the grapefruit but for some reason they don’t like mango, which does surprise me.

Thanks everyone for their input. Not cold enough for a cherry tree. I really like the idea of a mandarin tree.

HP, I’m not getting any younger either….lol
