Meanwhile back at the ranch..
I managed to forget about the passata simmering away last night then turned it off. Thought I’d reboil it and bottle it this morning. It’d reduced into a thick puree, almost tomato paste. 8 kg of tomatoes and I get four 600 ml jars. I shall do it this way next lot.
I noticed heaps more eggplants ready so I will get drying.

I did, but they stuck to the plates of the dehydrator like glue. This lot I’m just dipping into water with a squeeze of lemon juice and patting dry then into the food drier. I’ll let you know how it goes.
I don’t know what the bitterness is I hear about them and need to salt them to draw it out. I haven’t had one that tasted bitter at all.

probably because yours are home grown and picked young. I think they may get bitter as they get older, and some varieties may be better than others too. I don’t usually bother with salting either.

Oh, ok. You’d be right, I pick as needed and any oldies I miss go to chooks or worms or compost. The food drier is chockers.

Good morning. We had about 12 degrees at sunup this morning, now about 13 degrees. Overcast. I’ve planted out beetroot, Brussels sprouts and rocket, and picked rhubarb, beans and tomatoes. There were a couple of pork hocks that had been in the freezer for far longer than they should have been, so I’ll roast them tonight over water and have beans and creamy potatoes with them. They are a huge meal if you eat one each, so I will remember not to eat much lunch.

:)

Good morning. We have 16 degrees, overcast, occasional drizzle. We have had 13.5mm of rain in the last 24 hours and the garden is looking lively. The seedlings I planted out yesterday look great. Shouldn’t be too much setback this time at all.

Morning all. I’m getting ready to attend a card making workshop. Not my cuppa tea making cards, but I said yes to it months ago, apparently. Gotta learn to say no, lol. Never mind, I hope I can make a nice card for Sandy.

The man and I worked like trogans in the rain all day yesty’ to get new pens ready for the chook move and we didn’t finish until late.. there was so much to do I didn’t get around to actually moving any, but there’s still time. We made shadecloth covered wooden doors to go on either end of an area behind my mosaic shed and the house. It has a roof and is dry. That space was originally intended for a flat water tank. We have been using it to store ladders and plaster sheets. It’ll do nicely for a hen pen for now and it’ll be very easy to clean. On the fenery side I can open the door and take the lid off a nest box and get the eggs out easily. The other side opens onto the mini orchard and they will be let out every morn.

Right best have my brekky and brush my hair then I’m off.

just been to the Violet Town Seed Savers meeting this afternoon. Today we visited a local sheep farm and learned how the farmer is improving his paddocks using compost and compost tea. He makes his own compost to a recipe specifically to encourage beneficial bacteria and fungi in his soil. Four years ago he had a compacted soils at 1600 lb/in^2^ (I think that was the unit) and he has managed to reduce that to 700 lb/in^2^ just by topping with compost and spraying with compost tea rich in organisms. For reference most grass roots can’t penetrate anything over 300 lb/in^2^ and so most can’t penetrate past the few inches of topsoil. It was interesting hearing from someone who was using these methods in a broad-acre context, not just the home vege patch.

Vege stuff and gardening in general..
I raided the rhubarbs and chopped 2.5 kg and put it in the food dehydrator. I want to see how it re hydrates and if it loses flavour. I have dried eggplant and will try some tonight with our meal.
Fed rhubarb crowns with manure tea and picked a bagful of tomatoes. Big pile of rhub’ leaves into the compost. Some tomato bushes can come out soon, they’re looking a bit raggedy after the rain. Luffa vines are going everyyyywhere.
I picked 3 butternut pumpkins and making risotto tonight.
Parsley going balistic. I will dry a load of it next and hand out packets of it at the next swap. Basil too. Granny smith apples galore. I can smell apple slice :)
Peels and cores will go into a jar for apple cider vinegar. Capsicums are late but there’s heaps of them all colours and long yellow ones.

Kids raiding spuds and eggs…..they cause more damage than any bugs lol.

Now I find out that all my sons stuff that was in storage has been flooded during last Sundays downpour and the area is currently under another evacuation notice as the main bulk of water is inexorably creeping towards it. To top it off the MiL was rushed to hospital overnight.

OK.. the news is that MiL is OK.. she was warned that this could happen if she didn’t get her knees fixed.. at 87, who wants to have knee operations.. she refused them.. Now she is suffering from not having them fixed. She is just lucky that she has daughters though all either busy or far away.. care enough to keep checking. She has been saved from the fate of .. well none of us would want to be in that situation but it isn’t going to get any better without knees repaired or constant nursing.
The rain was good for me in general but ongoing effects will cost me. I’m not in any way severely affected other than by loss of wages plus incurred expenses. The gear in storage has been minor flood damaged and I’m currently engaged in prevention of further damage and salvage of that which is affected.

Morning, I’m just opening my eyes. Well one is open. Line up the cuppas.

I bought a 2nd hand washing machine for GS’s flat. An old maytag but solid, can withstand the boy, and in perfect condition. We borrowed Critters ute and picked it up and took it to his city flat. It didn’t fit the space. Bugga. So it sits out a bit and he will have to walk around it, but he didn’t care and we got it hooked up to taps and outlet drain and he had the thing loaded up in no time. The water pressure there is very forceful and I have never seen a washing machine fill with water so fast. Perhaps flow valves are needed.
GS’s girlfriend was there, and her mum. Then the mum wanted to know if we could give her a lift home, which is going east and out of our way. She does this everytime. I would have said no can’t sorry, it was already 8 pm and it’s not our car. Not to mention the man and the ute owner had 5 am starts.
But the softie man said yes..I could throttle him.

Then we got lost because the man ignored a gps directive thinking he knew a better way, (men!!) and the mum isn’t good with directions. Her ‘ yeah go there and pointing, actually meant a U turn. And we couldn’t see her pointing because she was in the back seat. I just wanted to get home. We finally got home at 11 pm after 2.5 hrs driving, took the ute back and went home and I went to check on chickens.
We left at 6pm and I hadn’t shut them in.
The little chicks in Muffin Tops group didn’t ‘go home’ to their pen but were sleeping in a pile in the middle of the lawn. I nearly stood on them. Out with the torch chasing chicks half the night but finally caught and got them in. Duckie the D’uccle, who’d ditched her best friend Lucky and prefers to hang out with Muffin Tops gang, found her old spot in the almond tree so I reached through the branches and got her out. There are big cats about.
I get inside to the light and there’s cuts and scratches all up my arms and lot’s of blood. The man exclaimes ‘what did you do, look at you!’ I told him to get stuffed, make a cup of tea and get me the band aids.

Rest day today.

Well we’re back. Bought 9 new plants because we wanted to. No vegie seedlings though. That was a bit of an bummer.

I think D has come home with a new view to filling the rest of his vegie patch. He became inspired but he hasn’t let on yet what the plan is. I was hoping to be able to get some florence fennel seedlings. Can’t seem to get them anywhere so we’ll have to order some seeds from Eden.

Exotics bought:-
2 different false Aralias. We had about 5 types when we first came here but have lost them over the years. They are featured in the latest Sub-tropical Magazine and my interest has rekindled.
Bought a dombeya fo another try.
A snow queen Hibiscus.
A couple of grasses.
A white flowering Malestoma.
An Ixora with a peach colored flower.

D has left them all on the dining room table for me to move to the verndah. Don’t you love ‘em?

Finally got out into the yard this arvo. I’ve cut back the Cleome. The Kalanchoe bed got cleaned up. Got rid of all the dead bits that have been annoying me for ages. I started on the crepe myrtle but it got dark so will continue with that tomorrow. Some of the C.myrtles haven’t even finished flowering yet. I can’t recall a flowering season as irratic as this one.

Standard, I think. I bought the deal online from one of those group buying sites. $299 compared with the normal $600+. who in their right mind would pay that anyway?

Thought I better check in before I’m swallowed up by the weeds around here. Seems I’m the only on one deck anyway.

Had a fast trip to the hospital last night because the old tachycardia chipped in again. I’m good today but I still hate hospitals.

The nurses had my room blocked off, with bars on the windows and they even blocked the air-con to my room on a 40ºC day.

Shows their appreciation of my performance in hospitals ;) True, they did suspect that I had TB, which I did but a non-infectious form.

Well I’ve been a good girl. Hope you’ve been good too. I finished pruning the crepe myrtle. Dug up some stray bits of grass and planted them in the bare spots under the front arch. Chopped out some root stock roses that have persisted in surfcing for ‘ears and ‘ears. I have glyphoed the roots again too. One of us will win this battle and it won’t be the rose.

I hope everyone is ok. It’s been very quiet on here.

Goodonya :)

I’m knee deep in plums. 12 kg picked this arvo. I’m washing jars and bottles at the moment and have 2 big boilers with chopped fruit ready for tomorrow and the sugar and spice and all things nice.
One lot for jam, the other sauce.
And I’m nurse maid to Max who has a sore leg and limping badly. He took off after a winged pidgeon and tore around the yard through trees and across paths over the pond and through fences..eventually it got away but he pulled up badly. No breaks but probably strained a muscle or tendon. On his old painkillers now. Silly dog.

I’m on to the passionfruit cooking today. I picked 46 off the vine yesterday evening and have sorted out recipes for Passionfruit sauce, Passionfruit mousse and passionfruit sorbet. There are still heaps on unripe fruit on the vine and I already have frozen passion in the freezer. There is pasionfruit ice cream in there too. I wonder if you can get sick of eating passionfruit.

Happy pluming HP.

I’ve been given some granny smith apples and some pears so will be bottling them today I think. And stewing up some peaches that aren’t ripening properly. They are still hard so I think they may have been picked too green. Not enough to bottle but would be nice stewed with some custard.

Enjoyed having Alexander here with his mum and dad but they went home yesterday morning and I miss him already! Mum hurt her neck getting him out of the car and was getting headaches and wanted to get home to her own bed. Has to be careful what pain killers she takes while breastfeeding.

Nope! Glad you like my life event stories, lol.

Todays..I was straining the plum sauce pips through a colander and overfilled it..I copped a ladle full of boiling jam all over my last 2 fingers on my left hand, hell, the pain! I ran to the sink and washed it off with cold water and grabbed my pawpaw cream and slathered it on. 2 mins later and all pain gone, just a bit tingly..5 mins later there’s not even a sign of a burn.
Then I realised my right hand copped some of the splash and I have a blister the size of a 5c piece..

The kids made mini pizzas for tea with english muffins and pizza sauce, ham and salami and cheese, they’re really yummy. I want them to clean the kitchen for me too..wonder how I will go asking lol. They’ve just come back from a long weekend at the coast at Le Le’s parents holiday cabin.

I’ve moved the 4 wk old chicks out of the brooder box in the laundry to a cage outside. They have a warm little house and will be fine. The are so funny to watch, flitting about discovering dirt and staring at the big chooks in awe.

Who leads dull lives?

Shit happens.. is the common parlance. OK I have been doing other work on a nearby farm while my boss spends money on trying to save his livelyhood. Each day I have to ring him to see if he is ready for me to come back to work so that I can ascertain whether I will be free to work for his neighbour(who has some land that wasn’t flooded).

Today he said; It is still too wet to work. I’ll call you if the trees survive.. You still have work with Vito for the moment?
Methinks.. there goes my permanent casual job..

I find myself helping him along just to keep the pace moving and even then he doesn’t always get the task finished. I can go straight into a Cert 4 online instead of having to crawl through a Cert 2 to be able to do the Cert 3 just to get a piece of paper that says I can do what I already can do.

HP = plums
Pom = passionfruit
Horty = mangoes (fresh ones in the fridge to stop them over-ripening, containers of mango cubes in the freezer, and giving them away to family, friends and neighbours. Enough to share with the parrots and the chooks too)
‘Tis apparently the season for masses of fruit all over Oz.

I know what you mean. When ex and I did our small business course we opted to do it at home. Each module was supposed to take a week. We finished module one in two days and they couldn’t post them out fast enough for us. Took us 5 weeks to complete what they’d allowed 13 weeks for.

Oh, and the basics of the Horticulture Cert 1 included such complicated and difficult tasks as ‘how to read a tape measure’ and ‘how to take apart a pair of secateurs, clean them and put them back together again’. It was astonishing how many pairs of secateurs the college owned that didn’t work because of students putting them back together the wrong way (When you pressed the handles, the blades opened instead of closing). And some dummy had thrown them all in the same box so that when we had to select a pair to learn ‘how to prune’, you had to sift through them all and were lucky if you found a pair that functioned. The lack of housekeeping skills at that college boggled the mind.

Most impressive of all was, in one of the later certificates (I’ve forgotten which but most likely 2 or 3), the lecturer who had to read up on ‘how to operate a brick cutter’ before he could teach us. My ex, who’d been paving for years, offered to run through it to show the lecturer. It was quietly hilarious later on watching the other students ask him and not the lecturer when they had a question. :D

What are you studying BG?

I’m on to the passionfruit cooking today. I picked 46 off the vine yesterday evening and have sorted out recipes for Passionfruit sauce, Passionfruit mousse and passionfruit sorbet. There are still heaps on unripe fruit on the vine and I already have frozen passion in the freezer. There is pasionfruit ice cream in there too. I wonder if you can get sick of eating passionfruit.

Happy pluming HP.

HP = plums
Pom = passionfruit

This forum really doesn’t like my form sometimes. Does it put anyone else’s comments all on one line even if you’ve hit enter between?
It was SUPPOSED to look like this:

Who leads dull lives?

Shit happens.. is the common parlance. OK I have been doing other work on a nearby farm while my boss spends money on trying to save his livelyhood. Each day I have to ring him to see if he is ready for me to come back to work so that I can ascertain whether I will be free to work for his neighbour(who has some land that wasn’t flooded).

Today he said; It is still too wet to work. I’ll call you if the trees survive.. You still have work with Vito for the moment?
Methinks.. there goes my permanent casual job..

Do you mean you think there is a risk of you joining the ranks of the unemployed? What will you do?

As seen above..

other work is more of the same. I’m a skilled tree surgeon. There’s always someone who’ll feed me while I graft a tree for them. What I am doing at the moment, is infecting trees with a dwarfing virus. The same farmer is the largest grower of blood oranges on our big island. He has plenty of grafting work to keep me busy till winter. If hungry, can always get oranges the pickers missed. Did you know that the best limes, the best rockmelons, the best peaches.. stuff like that, is wasted by the growers? They only pack the stuff that is unripe. Anyway if nothing else happens I’ve always got my opal mine.

Do you want to buy an opal? You could get one for a bit of tucker and a use of your washing machine and shower. .. er, after I graft your trees or prune them or chop some firewood, whatever. Do you have a clock that needs repair? Your washing machine doesn’t work? Can you use someone who can darn socks?

The swaggie isn’t dead.

Morning :)
Yes fruit abounds at the end of summer. I will email the parks bloke as to where the bunya nuts are. I have much to do still in the way of preserving, and a garden to clean up. I spent near on 3 hours cleaning my kitchen last night, mainly the stove. I can see it again.

I’m lending my little chicken egg incubator to a lady in Ballarat who’s autistic son is going to use to hatch a few fluffballs. He’s obsessed with chickens.
That’s good because the further away this incubator is from me the better lol, lest I get overun by all things feathery. Lin Lin is sitting well on her eggs and they are due to hatch this sunday. There’s some silkies and 5 leghorn bantam eggs, the latter which I’ve named ‘eggstar’ chickens. They are a small chook that eats little but lay huge eggs. I have two huge wyandotte x aracuna pullets just coming into lay at 7 months of age, and the eggs are silkie sized.

Incidently, I was watching the littlest baby chicks in their cage and put my fingers through and they came up to my hand. Max was next to me as usual and he stuck his nose up to the cage to check them out too..they were tickling his nose..then Max sneezed and in a nano second there wasn’t a chick to be seen. They’d got such a fright they tumbled over and piled up into a corner on the other side. Bloody hell I nearly fell over laughing, he’d blown them away LOL!!

I’m not having a good day.

We’re picking the colours for downstairs and I went down to try out the latest sample and opened the French doors.

Pity I didn’t notice the pile of timber leaning against one of them on the outside. The whole lot landed on my bare foot. Much pain, and to top it off the colour isn’t right either.

I’m converting a craft wood box into to bead box and I want to decorate the top. I’ve got some white gloss spray paint for the base colour and lined up a friend who’s an artist to do the design but I don’t know what paint to buy.

I was going to get a few sample pots of house paint but I thought there might be something better. My friend usually works in water colours so it’s going to be a bit of trial and error

you usually use acrylic paints for folk art, but whatever type of paint you used for the base you will need to use for the decorating. Jo Sonja paints are highly recommended for folk art but not cheap.

I’m exhausted, and I still have a Lenten Bible study to go to tonight. Today at CWA we celebrated the 65th year for Swanpool CWA branch with a High Tea. We all brought our 2nd best china and lots of goodies and invited people from other local branches. In the morning we had our usual meeting and then lunch. Then set up and had the High Tea, and then cleaned up. Only just got home after being there since just after 10am. For a feature presentation a local lady demonstrated how to arrange a flower table display and did two different styles. It was very interesting to watch how they were put together from a seemingly random bunch of flowers and greenery and how each layer added to the overall effect.

My shoulder is getting better, although some actions are still painful (eg trying to reach around to scratch my back or do up my bra). Physio says it will probably take about 12 months to be completely better.

Hope you are all well (I haven’t attempted to trawl the LHC yet).

Good point, although acrylics are pretty good for adhering. My feeling is because they are plasticy, they will take, but you will be able to peel the paint off the gloss base once the acrylics have dried, which means the slightest bump will lift it.

Two options:

Forget the gloss base paint, go with a matt base and then varnish once finished, or

Proceed as planned but use two or three coats of varnish over the top once done.

Option 1 is better, but if the gloss paint was really expensive and you don’t want to have to buy a new base paint, try applying two or three layers and then after it has dried, rough up the surface with a fine sandpaper.

Well, things have changed in my life recently. I think I mentioned one of my clients lost her battle with cancer? She was one of my major clients, at 3 hours a week. My dad is selling his salon soon so I won’t be required there any more. He has someone interested but it’s not confirmed yet. If this buyer is happy with all the conditions, it’ll probably all happen within a month, or he’ll keep looking for a buyer and it may happen any time over the next few months. Then on Monday night my housemate told me that she wants to move in with her boyfriend in the next month or two.

D and I have been discussing for a while the various merits of him moving up to Perth versus me moving down to Mandurah. On a good day it takes an hour and ten minutes to get from my place to his, but in peak hour it could take up to 45 minutes longer (I avoid peak times like the plague) His job is more secure than my variable garden maintenance work and he earns a lot more, so it seems kind of silly for him to look for a new job up here. He owns his house and I’m renting, although he was toying with the idea of buying a second house up here and maybe renting his out.

Anyway, with all the recent developments, I’m now moving to Mandurah in the next couple of months. The yard is a demolition site filled with weeds and not much else, and is only a quarter of the size of my garden. A challenge yes, but I will miss this beautiful oasis I’ve been creating over the last few years, and I will definitely miss the space and the almost rural outlook. There is something to be said for looking out of your kitchen window through a pergola framed by white bougainvillea on one side and blue solanum on the other, past the jacaradah tree in the lawn and down the path to the little metal gate with the chickens scratching away on the other side next to the mango tree. It’s all so positively ‘pastural’! I will have to play with smoke and mirrors (literally) to try to create that same sense of space when I design the new garden.

Also, I will have to find a new home for my chookies. :(

Yep. Not that I have a choice lately.. my back is too crook to stand for too long to spray. I will wait for little silkie chickens to grow and discover the bugs pupating in the soil. In time they will be enclosed in the mini orchard yard.

Thanks for all the painting tips.

The gloss white is just an el cheapo spray can so that’s ok. There’s still the option of using it and painting something simple with house paint samples, but I’ll research a bit before I do anything. I definitely don’t want to invest a lot of money in what’s really just a trinket box.

big decision on big changes there. Hope all goes well for you.

I’d feed you etc. for some garden work and you could keep the opal! (Although I do like them.)

No worries.. I could also probably do a better job of putting your motor bike back together.

I have a mulcher/chipper that needs working on – hasn’t been started in about 10 years….

But yeah, with a change in circumstances, other things have to change.

Not necessarily this extreme though. I could have looked for a new housemate (I seem to get a new one every year) and advertised for more gardening work to fill the days I would have been at the salon, but because D and I have been toying with the idea of moving in together, it just seemed like everything had aligned to suggest this was the time to do it.

If I got more clients up here and had a thriving business I wouldn’t be as keen to leave, but with my commitments at the salon, I was only gardening part time anyway, and having just lost my main client would only leave me with two days a week of gardening once the salon is sold. It’s just the perfect time to do it, and I can handle a long drive two days a week to my existing clients once I’m in Mandurah.

Oh, and D suggested I stay with my dad overnight, which might be a good idea, then it’s only one drive up and back per week, Dad lives right near my clients, and it gives me an opportunity to spend time with Dad seeing as I won’t see him at the salon twice a week any more.

I’m a bit of a late starter today. Even thought I might not bother starting at all but here I am.

We filled the pantry with the shopping this morning and I sat down to watch the midday movie and promptly went to sleep. Must have been a good movie. :)

We have some cloud, some showers and some sunshine. But that’s ok because the day is half over anyway.

I did find something to do.. make little jam tartlets. I am waiting for them too cool then will pack them away carefully and I’ll use them for ‘take a plate’ events :)

Had a call from Sandy, my sick sis, and she’s been at a pain clinic and now has a different mix of pain tabs that are helping. The poor love. She sees the oncologist in a week then will be able to tell me when is a good time to go visit.
That’s if I can physically do the trip..

Now he has replanted new seeds and will have to wait a few more weeks to try again.

Can you give us a quick rundown of how this works HP? Sounds like a good idea (I’ve already included a vegie garden in the new design, lol, even with the limited space!) Do you swap an item with someone directly, or does everyone put stuff in the middle and people take what they want?

No worries :)
I did start out with the intention to swap good for good, but over time people just place everything on the table and help themselves. But there’s a lot, like myself, who have grown too much of one thing just put it on the table for the taking. I do suggest to new members who come along looking for a particular thing to say what they are looking for, eg maybe need eggs or fruit to cook with or herbs they don’t grow and walk around asking what can I swap this with, ect. This is a swap and not just a food share.
We meet once a month but for the rest of the month if a person is looking for eg kaffir lime leaves they will ask and always someone else has it and they go visit each other, likewise someone might pop up and offer a bag of peaches got to be used this week, there’s always someone who can use them.

Originally I was going to join forces with another lady, but she had some pretty weird ideas as to how it would be run and she is very forceful, her way or the highway. She had thought it fine to allow ‘disadvantaged’ people to come along with nothing and take food. I have a problem with that..I had visuals of a riot happening. There’s places for people to get food and help for people who cannot afford much. Well I was right and arguments started and now many of her members are dissappointed and several have rung me to ask where our swap is or where others in the area are. There’s a few great ones about this area now. Others from across town even interstate join our page to get an idea of what to do to start one in their area. I am rapt about that :)

Here’s part of the info blurb about it on the FB page.

The Wyndham Fruit and Vegie Swap is a group of home fruit and vege growers who sometimes have excess harvests that they’d like to share and swap with others.

When is it? The third Saturday of each month from 11 am
Where? Iramoo Community Centre 84 Honour Ave, Wyndham Vale Vic.
Melways ref: 205 A7

It works like this : Vege growers bring their excess produce along and put it on a common table and then swap it for other home grown produce on the table. It’s very casual and no money changes hands. It’s up to the swapper to decide what is fair.

You can swap your produce for whatever you need. You could turn your extra figs into lemons, eggplants into oranges, roses into rhubarb, or home made pickles into pumpkins. Hopefully you’ll also pick up some gardening tips and have a great time while you’re there.

Some things you might want to bring along -

• Fresh fruit , vegetables & herbs • Seeds, excess seedlings, cuttings & flowers • Home made Jams, chutneys, sauces & home grown eggs (all dated please) • Excess clean jars and bottles for jam and sauce making.

Sounds as though it works a treat.

So what can I do with another day spent indoors? I don’t know. Could read my book. Do a jig saw, Sort my recipes. The ironing. Maybe I’ll just watch D because he’s doing a roast on the weber for lunch.

I’ll think of something.

Thanks HP. If only there was a group active over here I could have swapped my excess mangoes…I’m sure I’d have willing takers for mangoes!
Once I’ve moved and the new garden is productive, I’ll look at setting one up down there. There won’t be mangoes any more though, I have to leave the mango tree behind :(
I will attempt to transplant one of the young loquat trees though.

An average Wednesday ahead. Medical appointment this morning. What we do this afternoon depends on the weather. Inside or outside. Sky is still grey with sprikles of rain every now and then. Gets boring doesn’t it? Nothing much to talk about except the wet weather.

a quiet day here to catch up on house stuff. had my course yesterday. I complained to the teacher on Monday that I was wasting my time and money doing such basic stuff but she didn’t want me to drop out in case they closed the class on her so we are compromising. I am working myself through the Cert 3 book while she takes the others through the Cert 2 stuff. Much better.

D is in his glory. It’s like Christmas because he got 2 parcels of hose and watering connections in yesterdays post. These bits are decorating all the available surfaces on the verandah because the last thing anybody needs to do at the moment is hosing and spreading more water around.

At least he’s happy.

Boy am I stuffed. I was up early and off with a couple friends to some serious factory outlet food shopping.
We almost filled a 4WD. Then onto meat outlets and it was a squash with bags of foods pressing into us and under our feet. Then onto each persons home and help pack it all away.
Stuffed I tell ya. But boy did we save a bundle. No more 5 kg pack of pasta flour for me, I got a 30 kg bag at a third the cost. With fresh meats filling the fridge, I am going to do a major cook up over the next couple days and fill freezer with meals.

Argh woke too early. Oh well, cooking to do so I may as well get a quiet start.

A day in my mad life…I was putting my shopping goodies away and knocked a passata bottle over in the fridge and it smashed on the hard floor.. make that it exploded all over me. MY passata made with MY tomatoes! Noooo!
I looked like I’d been in one of those tomato throwing fights you see on tv. And glass everywhere! I removed as much glass as I could see and go outside and hose myself off..my jeans soaked I came back inside and stood on a towel to strip off and head to the shower.
This was on dusk and the man went out with the chooks supper tub, put the food down and locked them in their pen. Only it was the wrong pen and he’d lead them to their old yard. Silly bugger lol. I didn’t know this at the time.
We cleaned up the rest of the mess, had tea then watched a movie then I headed out with the torch to put the rooster in his shed bed.. and couldn’t see any chooks. I checked their old pen and sure enough they’d all huddled into a small dog kennel. 13 chickens stuffed into this dog kennel ..well 12 because Duckie went back to her fave roost up in the almond tree. I knelt down and shone the torch into the kennel and 12 sets of beady eyes looked up at me and I burst out laughing.. if that wasn’t one of the funniest sights I ever saw! LOL. I put Duckie into the new pen on her own and grabbed the roo out and left the others to sleep there. They were warm.
This is a perfect area for them except there’s no real shelter apart from the kennel if it rains, and no protection from cats. The tree is also loosing it’s leaves.

We have a beautiful, clear, sunny day happening here. Great to be alive kind of day.

We are going on a search for a new garden pot. I have a Uromyrtus that is suffering in a too small pot. The plant is a feature that sits under the outdoor wall art on the shed. I’m not prepared to use a plastic pot there so we have to make a new purchase.

The planned BBQ that was supposed to happen this evening has been cancelled. The ground is still too wet to have a social gathering so we have postponed it till next Saturday.

Ok. Pity we aren’t neighbours then, I have several you could have. I’ve been changing to plastic because the concrete and ceramic pots are too heavy. I thought they’d prevent gale winds ‘pot blow over’ but they didn’t, they’d just break.

good morning folks. cold and overcast here. apparently Benalla got a bit of rain but not here. The snow fields have been getting a light dusting of snow.

Life is certainly more interesting when you have a couple of calves in your back yard. Hanging out the washing with Butler getting in the way wanting head rubs, while Lester checks out the washing basket for something to eat was quite a different experience. Fortunately they decided that the washing wasn’t edible although I have to make sure when Butler rubs his head up and down my leg that he is not rubbing those hard little horn buds! This morning I was picking tomatoes and again Butler stands right in front of me for a rub, and Lester discovered that bean leaves are tasty. Not so bad as the beans hadn’t produced much and although looking green and lush had stopped flowering. Might pull them out and feed them to the calves away from the vege patch.

Tomorrow I am joining some ladies to do some folk art painting. I used to do this when the kids were little but didn’t have time or energy for a long time so am looking forward to spending the day with them getting back into it.

I voted. What a joke. The current labor candidate and sitting member for another 6 hours is the State’s Transport Minister and he has been promising to fix up the Bruce Hwy for the past 6 years. In that time, Brisneyland has had 5 tunnels, 4 bridges and 2 public transport corridors built while my supermarket shelves are out of stock because the Bruce is once again cut by floodwaters. The LNP guy has only made a noise when CanDo showed up during the week and has spent some good money on huge Billboards. The Kat in the Hatter Party had 5 people standing outside the polling booth with issued Akubras on and I was shocked to see representation from The Greens and the Australia First Party, who are they? I have nfi.

I also belong to a Credit Union, and as a member I have voting rights in their AGM. I think I know more about a retired copper from the Eastern Suburbs of Adelaide then I do about the Politicians in my town.

Oh just us up and attem hey. Hi :)

Whats the matter with a plastic pot for your plant?

Too ugly. I want a good ceramic one or that spot. All our good ones are being used. that’s what I am telling D anyway.

Ok. Pity we aren’t neighbours then, I have several you could have. I’ve been changing to plastic because the concrete and ceramic pots are too heavy. I thought they’d prevent gale winds ‘pot blow over’ but they didn’t, they’d just break.

Oh bugger!

We have been to check out a few local places but all toooooo expensive for us. We will head to the coast tomorrow because there is one huge pot place closing down. Looking for a bargain which seems to be the story of my life.

good morning folks. cold and overcast here. apparently Benalla got a bit of rain but not here.

Nice little fellars those calfs. Good company for you too.

Happy to hear that you are getting back into folk art. I wish I could join you for the experience. I’m still plodding along with my dabbling in acrylics. Doing a series of nursery rhymes atm.

Did the Bunn shop over. Had a lovely time. Spent too much again but you see so many things that you desperately need when you’re in that shop. Got the pot I want but it’s raw clay and has to be sealed. Waterproof sealant only sold in 1lt containers there and I didn’t want that much so I’m going to experiment with some of the stuff we have on hand round here. Got ag pipe for the drainage job and D finally got himself a pair of knee pads for gardening. He complains he is wearing the skin away on his knees every time he showers. Poor baby. lol.

For our trouble we were given a pass for 2 free cappuccinos at their coffee shop because we travelled for an hour to make the purchases. Methinks they are doing a survey on how far customers are travelling to do business. I pray that they are contemplating opening a store in our nearest major town. What a time water that could be for me.

So they should have given you coffees! Those knee pads are a pain in the bum, well I found they were. What was heaps better for me was a small kneeling frame with a handle either side to push my tired body back upright. I don’t plant out anything low or weed without without it.

We’ve emptied the big pondy tub onto the vege beds, the man dug them over for me, but very badly, flinging it everywhere, so I finishd the job. Then he made a gate for the rear mini orchard entrance as Max wrecked the mesh one trying to get the possum. Naughty dog. The chooks were getting in there and aren’t allowed to while I have rhubarb in there still. The whole gate was made with recycled materials.
Only he, the man, wasn’t in the bestest of moods, not a bad mood just silly/grumpy..bloody well anoying.. must be a full moon coming. Even the chooks were being naughty today.

Yummy lamb curry for tea for me. Laxettes for him. Thou shalt not p**s the cook off.

Popping in to say hello. I have been rather busy lately. A bit of gardening has been happening. Last weekend I started a bit more renovation of the old bluestone drain on the easement. Here is before:

And here is after I’d done some digging and washing down:

I’ve dug out several sections. In total I think there is about 40 or 50m of it. Some of it won’t be dug out as there is a gate over it which we put there before we realized the drain was under there. This bit is in the long skinny chook run, and there is 20m in that bit alone. Although I’ve only dug out a couple of meters so far. It is full of gravel, stones, broken glass, broken crockery and bits of iron. So it’s like an archeological dig.

In the front yard I’ve done a section too:

But it is a very long term project.

I’ve got one of those kneeling frames but you invert mine and it’s a seat as well. Even if I’m not using it in the garden I am using it on the verandah or wherever I need it. Love it. We have yet to hear how D likes the knee pads.

Good morning. It is eight degrees here and still dark.

As not all the drain will be cleared (in the end) it captures water, which sits for an hour or two and then dissipates into the soil. That’s fine by me. It would act as a drain if I cleared the whole length. But at one section we buried a dog on top of it (before we knew) so I won’t be disturbing her.

Aw, fair enough I wouldn’t be disturbing a buried pet either. Getting colder quickly here too, gotta pick and dry the basil before I lose it.

Good morning. Not much of the morning left so I just made it. We’ve been out to get some of the gravel left on the sides of the road where the flood waters depositied it. Back fill for the newly laid ag pipe. All our rivers and creeks are still over full and flowing at a great rate of knots. Sand and rubble is is lying everywhere but most of the trees and branches have been moved out of harms way. You can meet your neighbours out there. Everyone has a use for a bit of gravel. lol.

Our closest river is getting wider every time we have a flood. The banks are washing away by the metre. I wonder if that means that the bottom of the river is getting deeper too. It’ll be a good while before we can see the bottom to know.

My Ginkgo biloba has flowered. We now know that it is a female tree because we found the seeds. That means that it could end up being quite a smelly feature of the paddock but I love it anyway. At least it’s not close to the house because then we’d probably have to move.

Eeeww, makes sense if it was crossed with a chook that laid brown eggs.
Better get used to them because you won’t be able to GIVE them away, LOL!

Can we please have piccies of the espalliered granny smith? I had three beautiful espalliered citrus trees just coming along well for my client who lost her battle with cancer. Now I’ll never see them again, just as they were finally starting to look as they should….

I’ve relieved my espellier granny smith apple tree of 7 kg of fruit. That’s from it’s one and only branch lol. It’ll be trimmed and tied to the patio and part of the house facia, as soon as it’s lost all leaf, finally.
I’m making 2 big apple slice slabs with 5 kg and Mrs Daughter is coming for any left over apples.

One of my aracuana cross chooks laid it’s first egg..a horrible looking green coloured egg..hmm think army green.

You’re right about the egg, it’s drawing negative comments like ‘ew what laid that?’ lol.

Re the espellier I have this part photo I took for the apples on it but I can get a bigger picture later on. It’s not tied yet because the orchard fellow who is doing it for me had pruned it and put up chain in readiness but then got sick. In the meantime it was covered in blossom and he said we will leave it to fruit to see what it will do then this autumn finish the job. It certainly performs well.

I snipped this for special mention Horty. That is really sad. I’m just thinking out loud…
Is there any way you can approach the family and tell them about you being the gardener for this property and pass on any info about it to them? Or if the house will sit vacant for a while, as some deceased estates tend to do, let the family/ agent know? You never know they may want it kept nice and watered, and having been the gardener could you get permission to take some photos of this past job site for your business?

Busy day today. Quilting first, and hopefully getting my last applique block done and then over the next few weeks I can concentrate on putting it all together. I have no idea what the finished quilt will look like. But it will turn out to be a lot bigger than cot size. That’s ok.
Then arvo I have a weight checkup with my lapband Doc. I’m still getting a little bit of reflux at times so he will probably send me for an ultrasound to check all is sitting well.

I’m tired though because I spent part of the wee hours on the phone to GS. He woke up coughing blood and went into a flat panic thinking he was going to die…I told him he’s not going to die and to call the ambos and he did. While waiting for them I got him to calm down and went through what I know they would want to do. He said he had pain in his lungs. Ambos arrived and it turns out he has a small deep tear down his throat and ambos looked for any obstruction but none to be seen, checked his breathing and stopped the bleeding. They gave him pain relief and were really nice to him taking the time to explain things ‘this is your throat, and your lungs are further down in your chest’, ect. then they left. He has a follow up drs appt this morning. I will talk to his doc later and see if he can tell me if he found out why GS has a cut on the inside of his throat. Hubby has arvo shift and will go check on the boy on his way to work.

The family know exactly who I am. I’d met most of them before I went to the funeral and the wake which was held at the house.

I asked what the intentions were regarding the house and when they said they were selling I asked if they needed any help in maintaining it in a saleable condition and was politely declined, so I just said “You have my number if you need it,” and left it at that.

I’d feel awful asking to take photos, it was bad enough having to send an invoice, but everybody said I should. It hasn’t been paid and I’m not about to follow it up. I figure whoever is dealing with the estate will do it in their own good time and I have no idea what to expect. Maybe a cheque will appear in the mail in a month or two – who knows?

At the rate they were growing, and without regular maintenance, they wouldn’t be worth taking photos of now anyway.

Wow, poor GS and poor you, that would have been worrying for you both. Maybe he didn’t chew something sufficiently. I’m always cutting the roof of my mouth on the sharp bits of toast and biscuits. If one of those was only half chewed and I tried to swalllow it…ouch! Or a bit of bone left in a bit of meat?

The doc sent him to a clinic because as soon as he prodded the cut, the blood flow restarted. Eventually they got a foreign body out and it turned out to be a tiny slither of clear hard plastic from a take away container. He doesn’t just take a lid off as we would, but rips it off with force and a bit around the rim broke off into the food.
Ok, I have to ditch those and use foil trays with cardboard lids for food parcels. I can get them at lombards.
There’s always something.

Incidently the man slept right through my phone ringing, me talking to the boy for about 30 minutes and then talking to the ambo fellow. It was only when I hung up he stirred and asked what happened..I said it was just an earthquake, go back to sleep. ‘Earthquake’ is our code for a GS drama, but all’s ok and he will live. Saves midnight explanations.

Youch. I’m not particularly aggressive opening takeaway containers, but surprisingly often I find something small and solid in my mouthful and it’s a little bit of plastic that has broken off from the lid. It worries me a little how many tiny pieces I might eat without noticing, but since they’re very small hopefully no harm done!

Anyway, sounds like you’ve got a simple solution to stop it happening again, so that’s good :)

Glad GS is ok and not as serious as he thought. Although it’s bad enough with a gash on the inside of your throat.

Wow! His voice gave me goosebumps.

Although Simon’s comments were a bit blunt, I think he’s right and Jonathan is far better than Charlotte, but then without her, he would never have had the confidence to perform in public (poor guy, did you see the microphone trembling?)

Where do you go after performing The Prayer at your audition though? It’s one of the most gorgeous and ‘wow factor’ songs in existence.

hehe,, explanation from one of my chookie friends:

‘That can happen if you cross a blue layer with a brown layer. Blue eggs have a blue shell, but brown eggs only have a brown ‘bloom’ on them; kind of like a thin layer of paint. So when a blue eggs gets the brown bloom applied, you get what you have!

Would be great in a mixed coloured dozen eggs. Although some dills do think they are rotten! :)’

Haha! They’ve obviously never encountered a rotten agg if they think they look different from the outside.

Do you wash your eggs HP? I do, and I’ve found that I can wash the brown bloom off if I use a gentle scourer (by way of explanation, there was a particularly stubborn bit of chook poo on one of the eggs, I don’t usually use a scourer! Usually I just use water and my fingertips. This particular time, once I’d got the bit of poo off and the egg had a cream patch I had to scrub the whole egg of course to make it uniform) Care to do an experiment with one of your grey eggs and see if you can make it blue?

Now there’s a thought.. scrub it! I will havago later. I don’t generally wash the eggs but try to keep their nest box as clean as I can. Any laid in the dirt or mud get recycled back into their chook mash.

I have dumb chickens. They have a choice of four nesting boxes and they are all kept clean but of course they all want to lay in the same nesting box and it will always be the one that a chook decided to sleep in the night before and poo in. If there’s a single bit of poo, they’ll lay an egg on top of it.

I only need to THINK about clipping Ella’s nails and she miraculously vanishes. On the flip side I just think about taking her for a walk and she gets excited! Funny the way they’re so tuned in to us!
Max must be broken if he doesn’t like being brushed anyway, Ella loves it but never needs it, and Kuges used to love it too.

How is it that the dog knows I’m looking for his wire hair brush? Max follows me everywhere..but I’ve mislaid the brush and spent the last 30 mins looking for it, and somehow he knows! He’s hiding behind the pile of washing in the laundry! lol!

I only need to THINK about clipping Ella’s nails and she miraculously vanishes. On the flip side I just think about taking her for a walk and she gets excited! Funny the way they’re so tuned in to us!

That’s what gets me..he LOVES it, but only afterwards!.. he shoots off to the shrubs and runs under and over things at great speed. He hates being washed too, but after..Oh My God..it’s off and tearing about the house over furniture swimming across beds and the across the couch and round house, like it’s full of cats! I wash him in the bath and have learnt to shut the door to keep him contained.
He’s had an initial brushing, all knots out..tomorrow comes the bath lol.
I’ve come to the conclusion he knows about the brush when I do 3 things.. 1 look at his ears and part his fur, 2 mention knots, and 3 go inside and open a drawer……he knows my voice and my body language.

Zee Zee can tell the time. She knows that she gets fed at 5:30 each evening and summer or winter, no matter how high the sun is in the sky, she knows when it’s time. Then she starts talking in low level thoat noises. Trying to persuade us that it’s time to get it ready. Amazing creatures, our animals.

There’s a trick here – never feed your animals at the same time every day. Mine get fed anywhere from 6pm to 9pm so they don’t bother me if it’s a few minutes late. I believe that you should always eat dinner before your dogs to maintain your alpha position, so they get fed anytime up to half an hour after I’ve finished my food and had a cuppa (so that they don’t relate me finishing dinner with their turn) unless I’m going out for dinner, in which case sometimes I’ll feed them before I go, and sometimes when I get back, depending on what time the dinner is.

The cats unfortunately are another story. Because they throw up if they eat too much, in addition to their small amount of wet food morning and night, I feed them a small handful of biccies often throughout the day, which means they yell at me whenever I go near the laundry. Well, Indi does, Joely just tries to herd me into the laundry if he’s hungry.

ROFL!
That’s about as appealing as…ummmm….that’s just not at all appealing! It’s not green it’s grey – yukky congealing something kinda grey. Note to self – never get an araucana cross!

I dunno! Coloured eggs are really in at this time of the year.

We are talking about one small, totally spoilt, spaniel here. Of course we are lenient on her but it’s worth it. We don’t have any control issues to worry about. The whole prodeedure is a bit of a game really and we kinda enjoy her performance.

driving home from town this morning and saw a koala ambling along the side of the road :)

wasn’t quick enough to get a photo though as by the time I had gotten out of the car and got my phone camera open he had crossed the road and climbed a tree. Was quite a treat to see him though.

Hello! I’m awake……….. almost. Big night but it was such fun. I am so pleased to report that I still have it. Catering was a gas and enough left overs for us that I don’t have to cook for a couple of days. I planned it that way too.

We have cleaned up outside and stuff has been put away till next weekend when the family comes for Easter.

Does anybody know whether you can freeze Baba Ganoush? I made heaps with the last of the egg plants and there is too much leftover to.consume quickly. I only need to keep it edible till next weekend.

Going to have a quiet, restful day, doing as little as possible. that’s what Sundays are for.

Joely’s an ex stray/alleycat. He’s still, after all these years, in the habit of stuffiing himself until he bursts if there’s food available. It’s a shame, because Indi spent her first 8 months in a household where biscuits were always available, and it would be much easier both for myself, and for my housemate when she babysits.
