Oh I know I will……. love recycling …..
it looks like you have some baby wool there, that’s good for making Bilums, in fact, it’s the wool of choice up here.

Yes there is some baby’s wool in the gift……. very soft and pretty colours.

Because the baby’s wool is so soft, the meris up here spin it up again… they unravel the ball of wool, then double it up and (including sweat and oils from the skin) then roll the wool between their hand and thigh…. this twines the double upped wool into a softer yet stronger thread.
This thread is then rolled back up into a ball by completing a figure 8 between their thumb and pinky, by rocking their hand back and forth they wind up the newly created yarn.
Only then, can they start “knitting” their Bilums!

I can get a photo later. A bilum is a string bag, and now the Highland Meris make them from the wool in bright colours, some have Wallaby fur rolled into the wool to make a wooly bilum.
A bilum has a longish handle for throwing over the shoulder, or over the head, and you can carry everything from baby’s to all your vegetables. Each province in PNG has a slightly different style of bilum and the bilum that you carry, can tell other people about who you are or where you may have been.
Nowadays, the bilums in New Britain and New Ireland are still made from Sago leaves, the Bilums from Madang and the Sepik are made from a jungle vine, bilums from Manus are made from a grass and it is now the Highland bilum that is made from wool.
Well, it was only going to go into the garage sale on Saturday! And the cupboard it was stored in looks like going in the garage sale too. My front hallway is lined with boxes, boy I hope we sell it all – if only to be able to walk straight in the house again!
