I can’t put up a photo because as we all know they are too big. A description will have to do in this case.

We bought 5 Strelitzia plants a number of years ago. 3 have grown and flowered. Definately Strelitzia reginae. One has never grown much at all and the 4th is a bit of a puzzle. It has grown at the same rate as the flowering 3 but has not flowered. It’s leaves are different from them too. The S. reginae has long oval shaped leaves similar to the banana plant. Our ring in has short, fat stumpy oval leaves but still has the paler centre vein.

I am just a bit fearful that it may be S. nicolai or even S.alba, neither of which are suitable fo the position where they are planted. I have tried searching on the net but can’t seem to find pics of one metre high Strelitzias, other than reginae.

If anybody knows what we’ve actually got planted please pass it on to me.

Bubba, you’re pretty good at the IDing thing. Any ideas?

Gees Bubba, I was depending on you. I think we will move it to a place with more room anyway.

Without a photo, nor do I, and I can’t promise anything WITH a photo either.

Pomolo don’t worry if the photo is too big, we were just stirring :) put it in anyway.
and what if the plant is the unwanted one, what’s fearful about it? I searched images of ‘strelitzia varieties’ and heaps of pics came up, including photos of the nicolai.

It’s growing in a garden that we have established under two ajoining trees. Lots of stuff planted in under there. It’s just that a couple of the Strelitzia verities grow big like palm trees and there isn’t any room for that kind of growth. It could even turn out to be a Travellers Palm because it has that fanlike kind of base ATM. No matter which one it is anyway because it’s being moved very soon.

Thread hijack.

Did you ever buy anything to make fruit fly exclusion bags out of?

We’re having a massive cull of assorted “ stuff “ , and I found a bundle of what green harvest calls floating row cover. I bought it off them years ago and I can’t even remember what I wanted it for.

It’s like the interfacing material you use in sewing but thinner and I think it would probably make good bags. Or you can throw it over anything that’s in danger of frost damage.

Do you want it? I’ll only be getting rid of it anyway.

Pom, why not set your camera to SQ or 640 × 480 and take the photo. your download to dropbucket will be instant and your size for here will be sweet.

Yes please with many many thanks. I have wondered what it’s like and if it’s as good as they say. We will actually be in Bris this weekend so I will phone you sometime during our stay if that’s ok.

We could give you as many as you want to give us I bet. D is always threatening to dump them but I want to pass them onto one of the community garden groups. So there they sit like yours. Waiting for a home.

I know you are passing on good advice to me PM but I don’t know how to do what you are suggesting.

Problem solved. Will take camera into town tomorrow and get an expert to help out.

Well after much despair that our nearest town no longer has a camera shop, took the camera to BigW and the very obliging fellow behind the camera counter was only too willing to show us how to do it. Now I’m off to get the necessary pics for you all to oo and ah over. A bit of an anti-climax really.

I give up. I did as I said I would but after puter not accepting the photos and camera batteries going flat, I’m over it. You will just have to wait for a few years till I see what this Strelitzia turns out to be.
