AS a lone wolf, I should know this, but are there dogs that howl pretty much like wolves? I’m asking because because in this Hammer House of Horror story one character is insisting that a howling sound in the background is a wolf, while his host assures him it’s just a dog. We’re supposed to be siding with the scaredy cat, but I’m sure in real life I’ve heard dogs howl like wolves, at least in the distance.

Maybe I’m just remembering wolves howling in the distance in old films I’ve seen, rather than dogs in real life.

The Huskie that our neighbour had used to howl. So do malamutes. Our Boxers also do a long drawnout howl….but only ever when they are asleep. It’s really odd….it wakes you up and then you lie there waiting for them to run out of breath.

My beagles used to howl every wednesday night when they hears the CFS training siren in the distance :)

My dog used to howl whenever the kookaburras called. Like many dogs he could be induced to howl if you started up a howl yourself. We used to sometimes have a ‘family howl’ as a bonding exercise.

Well it is much the same, although a bit more worrysome when you are all alone in the forest with your back against the tree…and you have a broken leg.

I’d hate to be alone with wild dogs and a broken leg.. for that matter there are wild pigs out there.

Daisy howls. She’s very vocal and she can start a howl during her vocalisations and if I encourage her she’ll howl. The other day a strange dog went past the house, she started with a warning bark, then a fire truck sped down the main road, she went from a bark to a howl (I joined in).

Stuffed if I know a wolf’s howl from a dog’s howl. I’ve heard dogs howl, but not wolves. Ergo, I cannot make a comparison.

On balance I don’t think I’ve heard a dog howl quite like that :)
