Japan has switched off its last functioning nuclear reactor, leaving the country without atomic power for the first time in four decades.

There are now warnings the country could face blackouts this summer because of power shortages.

Japan’s last operational nuclear reactor at Tomari on the northern island of Hokkaido was shut down overnight.

Like the country’s 49 other functional reactors, it has been taken offline for routine maintenance.

Not one has been switched back on because of opposition from local communities fearful of nuclear power after last year’s meltdowns at Fukushima.

With its nuclear reactors idle, Japan has lost nearly a third of its peak generating capacity.

The country has increased imports of coal and gas to try to avoid blackouts as temperatures rise in the summer months.
