The Hamburger

A Big Mac, with all the condiments, contains 540 calories, 260 of which come from fat. Total fat in a Big Mac amounts to 29 g, or 45 percent of the Food and Drug Administration’s daily recommended value (DV). Saturated fat accounts for 10 g, or 50 percent of your DV.

Totals

The Big Mac meal contains 1,130 calories with a Coca-Cola Classic and 920 calories with a Diet Coke. The meal also includes 1,325 mg of sodium, which is almost a full day of the recommended sodium level for good health — 1,500 mg to 2,300 mg — according to MayoClinic.com.

A meal also contains fries and a soft drink, although these days you can have a water or juice and a salad with your burger.

Apart from a lot of fat, there’s a huge amount of salt in the meal.

Hospital grub scandal

A BIG Mac is healthier than 75 per cent of NHS meals, a shock study has revealed. 74 comments Related StoriesThe Sun SaysWhy a curry could save a lifeOne curry served to patients had SIX times more fat than a KFC Zinger Burger with fries.

And a pasta dish had over THREE times a person’s total daily recommended saturated fat intake and TWICE the salt limit.

The damning truth about NHS grub was unearthed by the Sun-backed Campaign for Better Hospital Food.

It wants MPs to bring in minimum dietary standards on wards — which schools and even JAILS already have.

Campaigner Alex Jackson said: “It’s staggering to think sick patients could be better off eating at McDonald’s.

“Without standards, many meals will remain unhealthy and unappetising.” Seventy-five per cent of hospital nosh contained more saturated fat than a Big Mac, while 60 per cent had more salt, experts discovered.

Thanks.

That’s a bit alarming that the NHS meals have higher levels of fat and salt than Maccas :-/ How do they rate for taste?

I don’t believe any of it, I think a Big Mac hamburger would stack up well against say a home cooked mixed grill of bacon, sausages, chips and gravy. A Big Mac meal is only unhealthy when compared with a vegan low salt meal of an apple and water.

No idea DA, but there’s a range of comments under that article, some of them saying they enjoyed their hospital food and couldn’t fault it etc.

And soon every eating and drinking pleasure will be banned by the nanny state and we will be forced to live a pleasure free life of misery to 100 and beyond eating tofu and lentils and drinking recycled water from the morgue.

PWM, I think the usual warning is just that fast food in general should be eaten in moderation. And you need other nutrition that’s not found in a Big Mac meal.

Well they’re in hospital because they’re sick… their comments can’t be trusted :P

Also, there’s not much else on a Big Mac other than meat, sauce, cheese and a wee bit of lettuce. Some of the other burgers would probably fare better on the nutrition scale because they have more salad on them.

i don’t believe that there is anything intrinisically unhealthy abourt a big mac as long as this kind of food isn’t eaten all the time once a week or fortnight is quite enough

considering that because we are not extracting polonium 210 and uranium from the fertiliser we are eating dangerous radioisotopes a big mac is the least of our worries

In some ways, the Big Mac is very nutritious. It is high in basically all of the vitamins and minerals, except vitamin C.

However, it is relatively low in fibre. Also, if you ate more than two of them today, you’d probably be over your recommended energy and fat intake levels, unless you have a very high activity level.

I sometimes buy maccas cheeseburgers, they are manageable as a high energy and smallish meal for someone who has no appetite but realises they need to get some fats and energy into them in a compact and relatively palatable (booos from the SSSF audience cos they obviously taste like crap) way.

Why? mr kii likes white bread, I’m not that fond of it unless it is crusty Italian or French loaves etc. We buy two types of bread – his white crap and my 12 grain stuff.

I have problems with potassium so have to watch my diet, I love fruit (one of the reasons I planted so many fruit trees before it all become diagnosed) but many fruits and veggies are now off limits. And methods of cooking hae to be changed, ie no light steaming retaining skin etc, it is more break up into small pieces, cook in lots of water and really ruin that sucker to break the cells to get pottasium out of the cells and into the water that you throw away. After a lifetime of fairly healthy eating it is a strange transition. And I too am advised that in my situation white processed bread is better than wholegrain brown bread. In general processed foods are better.

But a big problem is that with no appetite stuff I used to have stuff like sustagen as a supplement is off the menu as that is skyhigh in K, along with a lot of other high energy dense foods like museli bars etc.

My stress is good, financially secure, own home, guaranteed and indexed income, no need to work I can do what I like. I am in a small and friendly country town with support. My biggest stress comes from deciding what book to read next whilst I relax on the verandah listening to music and sometimes getting a bit of a stone on… for the appetite. When I was in hospital without even asking neighbours were keeping an eye on the place and put out my bins for me and collected mail. I gave them a bottle of Bourbon for the troubles.

If I had to work for income it would be a whole other ball game and not one I want to contemplate.

When I moved into the country, I was grateful for our neighbours inviting us into their house.

They made us feel welcome.

Then over the years we found about local prejudices.

Welcome to a country Town.

It all started with an invite..
