Subject: Eurovision 2012

An exceptional year, where countries battle to not host the 2013 contest.

My money is on those sweet Russian dolls – those Babushkias from middle Russia. Not your average Kate Bush rendition but authentic, baking gingerbread sweets for grandkids before they tranform into hard-partying fem fatals. Five out of five red stars to the Buranov Babushka’s.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXuqejF1qZM

Dropbear is probably plugging for the Swede Loreen, given the clear influences of Celine Dion (strings of ‘My Heart Will Go On’ flow through this track) over a stonking trance dance anthem and a questionable dress sense may attract the attention of the incarcerated PetertT. Three polar bears.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4PMQB5zmAU

But who could also ignore Ireland’s Jedward, in silvery, waterproof future suits and spouting, suggestive water features, the mirror due are sparkling, bouncing, red-cordial-invigorated superstars. 4.5 mirrorballs to Jedward.

I remember when Eurovision Song Contest(ESC) meant something, it was a serious award with a proud history of winners like Sandie Shore but now ESC is just a self mocking parody.

I’ve not been watching this year. Still haven’t worked out how to get the new DVD player and old VCR (through which I traditionally receive television) both plugged into the tellybox at once. Could be a long and frustrating job.

I’ll just put my Chat post in here too….as someone started this thread after I decamped for lunch and then a drive to Casterton…

I did just go and watch the Babushkas from Eurovision…..I loved them. And the tune was reasonably catchy. I’m pretty keen on the Icelandic one too (that is one good looking woman there, seriously muscled and a healthy – and she plays violin – where is BC?) But I suspect some of that is just that it is music I like. I like the soundtrack from “The Eagle”, even the stuff in Danish that I don’t understand at all. And the Icelandic Eurovision song is in a similar vein.

Yep…but you see, I was an ABBA fan in my teens. I can’t see the point – with Eurovision – in having a song that doesn’t catch. I’ve got to remember it, or be able to sing it.

Same applies to a musical. Which is why I hated “Wicked”. I came out of the theatre and had…..nothing in my head. Nothing stuck.

I went over to watch Iceland on the TV, big screen. I still think that was an excellent act and the Europeans don’t know what they are on about not putting them in the top ten.

They must have just chosen a country that could afford to stage the thing next year.
