I have a cordless home ‘phone with 2 handsets and two chargeing stations. Last night, both handsets had a lot of static type interference, this hasn’t happened before, and although it’s greatly reduced today, it’s still present, is this likely to be caused by atmospheric conditions? or a fault in the system?

It may be your base station that is having a problem or it could be external interference form other phones or other devices.

do you have a “normal” phone eg a telstra one? if so plug that in the wall socket and see if that is noisy.

In our case, it was knackered connections in the box down the road. Took a few technician visits and a couple of total f*k ups to get it right.

Bob, it’s a good idea to keep one of the old style phones around in case of an emergency.
During an extended blackout your cordless phone is as useless as a very useless thing.

Dont think they work anymore, I used to have one for emergencies, many moons ago I noticed it no longer rings in tandem with the other phone. No dial tone or anything. I suspect they have changed the system somehow so they do not work.

I might check with the company. Does it matter if you are not with Telstra? Would that make a difference.

No.
I asked because it is my recollection it went off line at about the same time I changed carriers, but it is very possible from the replies that it is broken.

more likely moisture in the fixed line and connections than the cordless set up

you could always check by taking the cordless set up to someones elses place and seeing if the crackling remains

this isn’t the old black bakerlite type which is meant, they are “analogue” and so wont work, but rather the white touchphone type.

Older phones with the rotary dial used what is called decadic dialling, whilst the newer style push button phone uses Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF). It wouldn’t surprise me if the older decadic signalling is not longer recognised.

I have a phone connected to VOIP, so if the power goes, so does the phone. There’s a payphone at the servo if the mobiles don’t work and I really need to order a pizza.

Hi Folks, thankyou all for your feed back, the interference seems to have vanished, so I think it could have been due to problems with the landline itself, now that I recall this has happened before.
